I was there today. Brilliant day. I wish I was going all 4 days.
That certainly wasn't a quote from Tiger then. ;-)

He's only any good on a generic Florida course or my playstation.

I'm feeling a bit jealous chirpy. Was it all you expected or more?
  • had a bit of poulter at 66's and kaymer 25's

  • Tough test and all that malarky but our links courses don't half look boring.

No one shining, anyone can win this one.

The definition of a "links" is a golf course built on the land between the sea & the arable land The ground is sand based & drains naturally, hence why you can play links golf all year round. Links courses aren't really supposed to be asthetically pleasing. I agree that RSG is one of the more bleaker but Turnberry, Ballybunion, Birkdale have stunning views. Americans can't believe the difference when they play links golf for the first time as they don't play golf on ground like it. I think there are about 250 links courses in the world & only 1 or 2 are in the US. That's why they over compensate with man made lakes & stunning clubhouses etc

links courses are always windy though. Whilst it makes the players jobs more difficult and adds an extra element of judgement, it kind of takes away the skill of the player. wind ruins good sports.
  • What skill is that ValleyGary...........the ability to whack it 350 yards down a flat imaculate fairway & then a 100 yard pitch to a flat green where the balls lands 10 ft past the flag and then spins back to within a few feet and leaves a birdie put !!   No, thanks not for me. Much, much prefer links golf & its a real shame that there arn't enough around this part of the country. Every hole is different and a real test of patience and skill.

lol kind of answering your own question mentioning the skill of mastering spin, direction and judgememnt.

a great shot from a swing you have mastered for the last 15 years gets ruined by a 40mph gust of wind and a dodgy bounce from a 30ft mound of dirt. na its shite.

  • People who don't appriciate Links Golf probably enjoy 20/20 Cricket......

  • Torn between links and parkland. I think I prefer watching Pros on links, but playing parkland myself. I get bored watching professionals welly their tee shots 350 yards down an immaculate fairway then pitching to within three feet of the cup. However, being a crappy amateur, links is far too difficult for me, so I quite like immaculate fairways, greens you could roller skate on and not a breath of wind to play on myself :)
  • sorry Leroy, but links golf is much more fun and as a bit of a hacker myself I much prefer to see my ball run & run on lovely links turf than to slice into the trees somewhere. Also, putting on links green are a much better test and you really have to be imaginative as to where you aim your putt.
  • Give me links golf any day!! Had the opportunity to basically learn how to play the game on Princes' course (right next door to Royal St Georges). Love the way the greens and fairways undulate and I like to see the Pros having to think about shots and not just play 'manacured' golf.
The weather this weekend will sort a few of them out - belive me. Played at Princes many times when its been howling and blowing a gale, and with the wind coming in off the sea its a bloody nightmare!! Looking forward to see who comes out of it on Sunday....Darren Clark is in with a good shoutand if Donald can make the cut (+3 at the moment on the 15th) then he should be good, along with Rory of course.

Yeah - but you're probably not as shit as me :)
  • Played princes a couple of years ago, the most enjoyable game I have ever played.
No disrespect afka links golf is different gravy to anything in the world and is so much better than augusta
  • Kaymer bottled it today, german knob, would love to see clarke win it. Kaymer has had the best of the bloody conditions
  • I don't know - Augusta looks pretty nice :)
  • I love links and them azaleas would be no good for my hayfever lol
  • Funnily enough, I suffer from hayfever as well - but have only ever had it out golfing once (though it did completely nause up my round). I think I'd put up with it to play Augusta though :)
  • e/w Dustin Johnson & Ricky Fowler. Gone with the Yanks.
Crikey - that's not looking too bad at the moment! Been hugely impressed with Fowler all week. He's just a kid, and can't have played much (if any) links golf, but he's been superb. To go out there and shoot that in the absolute worst of the weather today is phenomenal.

The weather makes it a lottery - who knows what will happen tomorrow if the weather's good early but dire later. Would love to see Clarke or Jimenez win it.

  • I've got a feeling that Clarke will bottle it............I know everyone missed putts today, but he missed a couple of easy ones early on and really should be 3 or 4 shots clear. If he missess them tomorrow then someone will be lurking to make him pay.
  • leroy, im gonna be bricking it today watching. gonna be so many twists and turns. johnson fowler playoff would be a touch tho :)
  • I still think Clarke has the game and expereince to win it.....forecast is crap around the time he tees off but improves (a bit) later on. Jimenez may be an e/w shout......would be nice to have a UK winner though and Clarke deserves some good luck after all his trials and tribulations. Gonna be an interesting afternoon......cant wait!!
  • I think someone will come right out of the pack, Davis Love or Phil Mickleson.

Yeah - Mickelson worries me. Can't stand the prick, and he is perfectly placed to make a run at it

Bit harsh Leroy. Mickleson makes more effort with the galleries than most of the players out there. Had loads of personal issues and carried on playing with a smile on his face. Respect the bloke greatly.
  • Clarke 3 shots clear after 3. Long way to go, but it's his to lose at the moment. Northern Ireland - the centre of the golfing world.
  • Clarke no shots clear. Mickelson is flying & now joint leader at -5.

Yep.And the fact he f****** hates Tiger Woods makes him alright with me.
  • Clarke 2 clear after 7. Capitalised on the Par 5 7th with an eagle.
