Am going to go slightly off-topic here but to be honest, i could never understand the fuss about who has what number. Some players do seem to get the hump about it though, and i'm not just talking about pro's. When i used to play (pub league football) There was always at least one player (but usually about 5) who insisted that he could only play wearing a certain number, which is on your back ffs, so you can't see it. I was just happy to get a shirt. One time, one of these prima-donna's started having a real sulk, like a toddlers tantrum as someone else had picked up "his" shirt. They swapped to keep him happy (as he wasn't gonna play) and whilst he was putting his socks on, i swapped his shirt for mine and he went out there happy as larry, with all his team mates knowing this and giggling away. It wasn't until the end of the game when someone told him to look at my shirt.............he went absolutely mental.
Anyway, back to your question........i agree that waggy will probably keep the number.
Regarding Tango's comment, i heard that supposedly Shearer didn't sign for Man U because he wasn't guaranteed the No.9 shirt. (Brian McClair had worn it since numbers were introduced in 93/94 season), he then went to sign for Newcastle (Les Ferdinand lost the No.9 shirt and wore 10). Don't know if its definitely true but oh well makes funny reading.
I think it can be a statement of intent by the manager. Green will no doubt start ahead of Wagstaff and therefore should get the number seven shirt. Wagstaff knows that if he wants that to change he's got to push on and prove to the manager he's better than Green. If he manages that then this time next year Wagstaff will get the shirt. Small potatoes maybe but all part of a managers arsenal.
Fortune wore 24 for most of his career if memory serves me right, Stevie Brown was invariably 12 and Dailly was 36 or 37 to name but 3 off the top of my head.
Why buy players of Green's calibre if you are going to keep the same old shit (waggy) in the first team?!
Therefore.
GREEN 7
Green 7 as Waggy wont get a look in
Green will be first choice but don't write Waggy off. Different type of player and even if he mainly comes off the bench he could still play a big part next season.

Agreed. I think Waggy has the potential but also has some work to do before he really makes it. He could well be a solid bet for last goalscorer next season, though.
