I wonder if this is evolution or revolution?

edited July 2011 in General Charlton

Well here I am sitting in my Sussex garden waiting for the new season to start-somewhat knocked sideways by the volume, and potential quality, of the new signings and hope passionately that this represents a new era for Charlton. I consider the changes in the structure of the club, the scouting, technical directors and, of course, the academy. These are potentially exciting times to be an Addick and I cant wait for the new season to start, so much so that I drove to the Valley yesterday to swap my seat after 8yrs in NW "B" to join the upper north.

But I worry too....SCP hardly set the world on fire last season did he? Do you think that this new squad and SCP will be expected to hit the ground running? A dodgy start to the season is going to bring real pressure to the Manager and I wonder if the Clubs board will be patient-in the past patience was seen to be extended to Alan Curbishley with splendid results will this board take the same approach?

I suppose I was anticipating incremental change-what we seem to have is sudden change. I cant remember any Club making 10, to date, signings in the close season. Make no mistake everyone involved in the Club has my very best wishes for the forthcoming campaign but I do hope patience and tolerance are built into the strategy and this is extended to the atmosphere in the stands.

COYR-Best to you all on here and see you at Woking

  • This going to be Chris Powell's team. I think we'll see a difference this coming season

    SECONDED!!
  • It will be different I can sense a change , the board the structure theres a change happening and it feels refreshing
  • I'm not going to be getting too excited about this season til we are in the Top 3 come October. Sure, it's Powell's team, but it doesn't mean he's a good manager just because he has a lot of money to throw around. I hope he does do well, but I'm not getting excited quite yet.
  • I hope Chris does well but he is unproven and the way we were at the end of last season doesn't look promising. Admittedly, this wasn't his team. I don't think the board will hang around though if things don't look good at the start. I think they already have plans in place if things don't work out. The feeling I get with this board is that they know what they want and they'll get there. No messing around. This is all good for the future of Charlton. :)
  • To be fair, parky also struggled in his first term and did well after we'd been relegated. Should be a strong team
  • He won't have any excuses, that's for sure!

I do hope that he isn't pushed out too early, IF the side doesn't gel straight away.

With Powell seemingly influencing these players to come, advertising our vision, potential, & possibilities, it may make those players think again if he goes. Saying that, they would have to be professional & get on with it.

Milney, Upper North, are you sure? There are some right c*nts erm, lets say, "mentally irregular folks" up there (not quite all). Whatever you do, if you have kids & don't want them to develop into foul mouthed arsewits, or pikey thieves, don't take 'em up there!
  • i would like to say i sit in north upper and im 17, not a pikey or a ' foul mouthed arsewit' thanks.

    I second that :)

  • You're a twat Stefco & presume that you've never set foot in the upper north. In the main "around the drum" they are young kids having fun & supporting the team no matter what, which is more than you can generally say for the rest of the ground. Behind me there are 3 generations of a family, start of the season I'll ask them which category they fit into. More broadly across the whole stand you have from young children up to pensioners & have never had anything stolen even when I leave my bag by my seat & go for a half time beer. Pikey thieves ? you fucking tosser, foul mouthed arsewits "There are some right c*nts erm" well thats so well disguised nobody would guess what you wanted to say, you obviously fit into that category yourself.

Yes there is swearing etc but is it any worse worse than what you can hear on tv,in films, in the street & basically anywhere! Bring your kids up properley teach them that swearing only makes them appear ignorant not clever....& then go & call Charlton supporters cunts, you hypocritical arsewipe!

    Well said sir!
  • Calling my son a pikey now theres something I don't like very much
  • Talk about 'think before you post' ...

But still, We're all Charlton here! And for the record, im 16 and sit in north upper, I don't rob anyone or go pikey on people.

  • A good post descends into an argument...
  • Crickey calm down everyone , i go and watch an episode of 'Lie to me' come back and the place descends into chaos!
  • Lie to me is brilliant. Anyway, back on topic. Seems more 'evolution' to me, what with loads of new signings and new structure changes... revolution would mean the old players and old backroom staff turning it around.
  • Well, i reckon 90% of a manager's task is bringing in the right players and from what people are saying on here, he seems to have done that and assuming he doesn't then go and play them all out of position, he should be ok. Reacting to what happens during games can then make the difference between real success and failure - along with a bit of luck. By November, if we're not in the top six i reckon he'll be gone but i think we will be.
  • To my mind, we did need a revolution at Charlton - root and branch reorganisation.

I'm pleased to say that that is what I think is happening.

  • agreed although i think the evolution bit is the fact that we are going to buy to get out of this league first, then for the championship and then evolve into a team capable of staying in the prem so not to expect big names yet. What we've done this last few weeks though really does make me think that our pockets are as deep as we need them to be to achieve this.
  • I think it is evolutionary in the sense that we have not gone out and spend a fortune with money we haven't got to build a team that should carry us through to the Championship.

It is revolutionary in the sense that getting in quick, stealing a march on our competitors and bringing in a whole bunch of hungry, something to prove, quality at this level, players; is not something we have seen at this club since perhaps Lennie Lawrence built his promotion team in the mid Eighties.

The jury is of course out on Chris' ability to knock them into shape. We will soon see if this pans out. The dynamic at the club has radically changed. Even the doubters can see that the club has made a giant leap forward for the first time in years. For me, equally as important as the new players, is the hiring of Hart and Vetere which suggests a cogent strategy for the future.

Its a good time to be Addickted.
