Hollands & Wiggins - Thoughts of a AFCB fan

edited July 2011 in General Charlton

Hi CAFC fans, just some thoughts from an AFCB fan.

Wiggins - Overalll a very good player. Excellent going forward, good pace, technically a good player, also decent on set-pieces. Loves to get forward and link up with the winger. So yes, one of the best left backs in the division last year. Could be better defensively? Yes, maybe. Does it leave the defence exposed going forward too much? Sure.  Why was there some negative comments? Well after being very injury prone took him from Norwich and gave him his chance. The fans funded his transfer after a loan spell and everything looked good last year "I can’t speak highly enough of them and the players and was desperate to come here. The other clubs had nothing on Bournemouth for me". So what changed? Well the departure of Eddie Howe was a big factor which lead to some unrest. The bit the grates with the afcb fans was the "I want to play at a higher level" part. Of course CAFC are a bigger club, it's a great club and is one of my favourite stadiums but it still lead to the 'leaving for the money' belief. In the end sad to lose his quality but glad he has gone on the personal side (led to a bit of disruption in the end). Will be booed.

Hollands - A solid player. Good tackler, good in the air, good range of passing, good at set pieces, good shot on him. Ok, so he has had his not so good patches and not the greatest pace wise but will do a good job. He's one of those players who you think is older than he actually is. Interesting to see if he is a regular. Well respected, will be clapped.

Also being a Southend fan...... Chrissy Powell my lord. Legend.

  • Thanks for that Drag , really enjoyed the visit to your turf last season , hope you do alright this season , but not as alright as us.
  • Perhaps Wiggins is hoping there is a little more chance of Champ football with Charlton. If he's right or not remains to be seen. we've obviously increased his wages too.
  • Good luck too! I've never seen CAFC as an arrogant club - good fans too.... unlike a club whos name I won't mention a bit further along the coast. Will be strange for the players to be playing their old team mates so soon but looking forward to a trip to the valley again.... despite not being able to find anywhere obvious to drink and eat before the stadium... any tips?
  • If you want to eat and drink before the game, I would go into greenwich, as there is alot more choice than there is around the ground.
  • im glad were not seen as arrogant and a sensible bouurnemouth fan, seen others say hollands and wiggins cant cut it in this league etc. few others moaning about wiggings but that's understandable.

As Pal said Greenwich or Blackheath. Both short trips on the train
  • Dont eat anything cooked within a half mile radius of the valley. Should see you good.
  • Good honest views there, all the best to you and AFCB who I think a lot of people admire after turning things around in the last few seasons.
  • Thanks for your input dragback, please come back and give us your thoughts after the season opener and throughout the season. 99% of us enjoy the sensible inputs from fans of other clubs
  • yeah cheers dragback .... but be gentle some of our fans are really sensitive if anyone suggests that everything is not perfect at charlton

  • Interesting insight Dragback....thanks. Hope AFCB have a good season, looking forward to the opening game against your side, of course I hope we win, but also hope its a good game.
  • Thanks guys for the tips on places to go... hopefully will be a good game. One question I have.... as you know we have had our money problems and have to cash in on selling plaers (upto 2 million) in the laat year or so.... but where have you got your money from to go on this big spending spree? Have you got new investors? Cheers
  • yep we got taken over in jan and they came in sacked a manager instated powell backed him and said we'd have significant investment and we have, not to sure how much goes on behind the scene's but there is obviously money there!
  • We were taken over last year by some mystery men.  No one really knows the source or quantity of the funds but plenty of people like to guess!

AFCB have a recent history of active fans trying to save/help their club. Most Charlton fans can relate to that, as we do to all the clubs that have experienced similar stuff. Thats why the passive customerisation of most prem clubs is a bit alien to a lot of us.

Our recent money comes from an investor group called 'The Mysterons', led, allegedly, by a being called 'The Mekon'.
