Chelsea/Man City Syndrome?

edited July 2011 in General Charlton

Don't want to put a damper on things BUT, when Chelsea first had their investment and big signings they ended up finishing 4th!  Also City ended up mid table.

My point being do you think our new look squad may need a year before challenging for the top two?  Or do you think a team gelling in this division is not as important as the top flight?

  • no they didn't? chelsea's first season with abromovich and raneri they finished 2nd?
  • 2 year plan for scp
  • Im going into this season hoping we'll do well but not expecting it.  We have signed players on relatively lengthy contracts which indicates we are looking long term rather than promotion at all costs.

Would be interested to know whether they are purely CPs's signings or whether their was influence from higher up. CP has a lot to prove this year but i hope the board and us give him and the players time to gel. Expect us to be around the play offs and as long as it isnt the disaster of last season will be happy seeing us moving forward.

With the squad we seem to be assembling we surely must be contenders but as you say BR7 nothing is certain just cos we've opened the cheque book. As was said by someone on another thread it's a good looking team on paper but its on the pitch that will be the proof of the pudding.

One thing in our favour should be that the signings have come in quite early on in the summer. Many seasons before has seen us playing trialists against Welling and not seeming to know our starting let alone best team til a fair few games in.  Hopefully if we can recruit a few more signings, particularly at CB theyll have some gelling time before a ball is kicked proper in August.

I also hope that with all the new players they will all be chomping at the bit and hungry to prove themselves to the new manager and fans.

  • It can take a while for a completely new team to gel but having said that, it would seem to be a good policy to sign the best players in the Division and it is more likely than not to prove a successful strategy IMO. Might take us a few games to get into our staride though.

Okay my bad, but still 11 points behind the winners.
  • Finishing 4th in our league can be good enough, as long as we can win the playoff, so i don't see the problem?

Also, Man City didn't get a lot of the signings they wanted, they may have signed Robinho, but they missed out on a lot more, and therefore it is only the past season or so where they have managed to attract proper world class players, like Silva, Yaya Toure and Tevez

The winners were Arsenal, who didn't lose a game. I think coming 2nd was an achievement that season.

I think it's still clear what point I'm trying to make though isn't it?
It's definately a two year plan because we've got a whole new line up.
  • More like its a whole new line up because the last squad wasn't good enough to get promoted, and this one is being built with the one goal of promotion in mind. It's a two year plan alright, but it involves this squad in the league above next season......
  • I think that's right.

  • The plan, as i understand it is to 'do a Brighton', playing good football and running away with league - this coming season. Whether that happens is another matter but i think it's possible.
  • chelesea and man city brought players into one of the best leagues in the world.

charlton are taking the best players from their league, its different.

i dont want to sound impatient but like Dan says above I expect  to do a Brighton
  • I also think that we are going to be very open and attacking minded which is going to feel a bit strange - I can't wait for the season to start.
