Think I must be mad - I pay £120 per month for Sky, HD, Multi Rooms, etc. If I sat and worked out how much I paid each year it would depress me, but it gets used and I watch football on most days sometime during the day. Whenever there is a problem I still end up talking to someone from foreign call centre who can't speak fooking English though!

I used to love SkyPlayer on my xbox, until my mum went and changed her subscription to virgin
For those who can't afford sky, you should look into seeing if you have a friend with a sky account and no use for their sky player, bung em a £10 a month for their password and away you go, sky on yuor xbox with all the channels they pay for at a fraction of the cost!
Only problem I found with it was that SkyOne always blocked off Simpsons for some reason.

That's funny. Their call centre is in Scotland.
In that case there is a lot of foreign staff there! Customer Services are in Scotland, but technical faults are not...........
I got Sky Sports as a Birthday present for my missus ( yep i know i'm lucky and she supports Charlton , even better) a couple of years back , and we've kept it going , haven't got for Hd but Sky Plus is brilliant , probably watch more tele of what i want to watch rather than just whats on , as i record it and watch stuff when nothings on or if i'm out, do admit Sky is expensive , but i don't smoke , and don't drink regularly, live in a flash house or have flash holidays, and try to live within my means , rather than chasing stuff, so i guess its what do you ' blow your stash on? ' to coin an Apprentices recent phrase, and yes i know i'm boring but i like boring, have had enough trauma & excitement in my life thankyou, without supporting Charlton! (Er not that kind more like hospitals, over the years).
Yes, since retiring I've been watching much more than I should, but we've always been a family of telly warchers ever since one of my dad's horses came in and he went off and bought our first one around '51 or '52. A 'Pye' with a tiny screen and a bloody great magnifying glass tied on the front. But I digress: our Sky+ box has been mucking about for a while but they offered us an HD box and set up for free though of course the subs would go up accordingly. Well we've gone for it but with the intention of slimming down the package in the near future. We shall see!

I don't doubt you for a second but it did make me laugh when I thought you were referring to the Scottish as foreigners that can't speak fooking English. :-)
this thread prompted me to phone up to cancel movies, we currently have all channels, i told them i wanted to cancel sports as well, have just agreed 30% reduction on monthly bill for next 6months and keep movies and sports...
The only thing I missed was the Sky + facility which I though was brilliant. As I said earlier I bought a Top Up TV Box which gets me access to all Freeview channels and I can record/link etc just like Sky +
I phoned up to cancel the sports channels at the end of May, they offered me £10 off for the next 6 months and a £50 free credit and I get to keep the sports channels so for one phone call I've save £110. I normally pay £42 thats without the movies though. A few of my mates have done the same and they have all received various deals not all the same though.

Which begs the question why didn't/don't they offer you these kind of deals until you threaten to leave.

It earns them more money, think of all the people who don't ring up to cancel who get charged the higher rate.

Where's the regulator when you want them ensuring that the consumer is not being ripped off eh?
I am a virgin customer, recently a chap from sky came to the door offering what looked like a much cheaper deal.I took his number and quoted it to virgin. They gave me the usual - we are going to report Sky for this lie and that about their service compared to skys etc... but then offered me a significant discount to stay with them as a loyal customer -(a loyal customer- what was I before I threatened to leave them then - a mug probably). Anyway I said I'd think about it - I spoke to the Sky bloke to compare the 2 offers. He did the usual - we are going to report virgin for this lie and that about their service etc... and insisted he came over when I was quite happy for him to undercut the virgin offer over the phone. He was insistant he needed to discuss with me in person but I could tell he was full of BS with some of his claims -not letting on I was as technically minded as I am - things like sky have a box that can turn a normal TV into a HD tv lol.
Anyway, to cut the story short, when you went into the detail the deal was not as good as it first sounded. He got a cup of tea but no deal - I told him it wasn't as good as I first thought and needed to think about it some more. I had decided I wasn't going to leave Virgin which was still marginally more expensive after their offer but has better broadband and you don't have to have a dish installed. However, I phoned Virgin and told them I had seen the sky chap and was about to move to them but wanted to give Virgin one last chance to keep me as a customer. They said the discount - which was @ £25 a month on my previous deal was as good as they could do but that they would let me have a virgin plus box for an extra one off payment of £25. I said I'd stay if I got it for free and the chap I spoke to went to speak to his supervisor for a minute then agreed.
The point of all this is, they do have scope to cut your bills but you have to be a bit hard nosed. I gave the Virgin bloke an ultimatum but if he refused, I'd have rung up half an hour later and took the best deal they offered previously so it isn't really an ultimatum for you. The thing I found with Virgin is that some of their operatives don't really care about customers or keeping them so if you get one of those, It's best to finsih the call at the first opportunity, try again later and get a better one. From my dealings about 60/40 against between the good ones and the bad- the indian call centre ones can actually be quite rude and generally make things up as they go along.
Anyway, I now pay significantly less for better kit and my only annoyance is that I didn't negotiate with them sooner. There is real competition between Virgin and Sky so use it - they are more than happy to have loyal customers paying over the odds and disloyal ones (like me) termed as loyal customers and paying a lot less! Whether you are a Virgin or Sky customer- or intend to leave or not -get a quote from their rivals and use it as leverage.
The Sky bloke and his mate came around offering me "some really cheap deals" to entice me back. I told him I wasn't interested. He then asked me about phone and broadband. I told him OK, you tell me about that, if I tell you about what I do.
Over a cuppa, the first thing he told me is that he is not employed by Sky, he is self-employed. He had been doing it for three weeks and was signing up 5 customers minimum a day. They have a week of training and then are let loose on the unsuspecting customers.
The broadband and phone deal of course was not available in my area (I already knew that!)
I then told him that I am a distributor for Utility Warehouse and we guarantee to be cheaper than peoples existing broadband and phone packages or we will guarantee to pay them double the difference. I asked him how we could offer that kind of deal if Sky's broadband/phone deal was really as free/cheap as they claim? Of course he had no answer.
I worry very much about the misleading/miss selling that is going on with very little, if any intervention by the regulator. Virgin, in my experience, are just as duplicitous, telling customers that their Virgin package has to include taking their landline (at £11 plus a month) when in reality they have by regulation to offer television only packages and will do so if pressed.
Interesting thread....we changed to Virgin Media last August to save money....it now seems to be working out dearer. Before we changed we had Sky (all channels, HD but not multiroom as only have 1 TV in the house), phone with BT and hard-wired broadband with AOL. Went over to Virgin and had basic TV package (no sports or movies), Wi-Fi Broaband (which I have to say is very good after some teething problems for the first few months) and phone. We were thinking of changing back to sky but didnt want to go back to BT/AOL. Yesterday Mrs RM received a letter from sky asking us to go back to them....same package as last time but at 50% of the cost for 12 months and £100 credited to our account to pay for Sports and or Movies which wll also be at 50% for a year. Going to ring them and see what they can do on phone and broadband, BUT I have a question is their broadband any good? and anyone tell me if the new phone/wi-fi broadband package from BT is worth it? Any assistance greatly recieved...it's Wi-fi broadband I want and the best deal on phone packages.

They prey on customer inertia.
I wonder how many people out there don't go to confused.com or comparethemeerkat to check their car insurance? Or have their money stuck in low interest bank accounts because they can't be bothered to spend five minutes checking on cheaper alternatives?

We had a lot of probelms getting the sky broadband set up, although it's not too bad now (still freezes now and again, usually late at night just as I'm on the vinegar strokes!)
I don't have $ky. For three reasons: first the cost; second I don't want to pay to watch adverts; and, third I'd never get off the couch watching all the sport!
I use Freesat (not Freesat from $ky which is a different offering). This gives me 2 BBC HD channels, ITV1 HD, Channel 4 HD and a quite interesting japanese news channel in HD of a quality that makes the BBC effort look very sad indeed. All for the one-off cost of a set top box or PVR - you can reuse your $ky dish: it points to the same satellite. For the future there will be more HD channels which freeview won't be able to provide because of a lack of terrestial capacity.
For broadband and telephone i use talktalk which is cheap and cheerful but for only a small add on gives me free international calls to most major countries which is really useful for me.
Your sky broadband is dependant on where you live, like all broadband. Virgin tends to be better because it uses fibre optics. The sky salesman was trying to tell me the sky broadband was just as good in my area when I knew for a fact that it wasn't. If you have been with Virgin for nearly a year, you will have more barganing options with them as your contrcat will run out then. If you haven't contacted your provider for years, talk to a rival company - even if you don't change -you can save an incredible amount.

True it is expensive but i dont pay for it :P
I couldn't do without SS either
