John Copus Sports

edited June 2011 in General Charlton
Reading the "old shops" thread got me thinking about this place. It's still there I think, in Ennersdale Road, Hither Green which is quite amazing (yet reassuring) in this day and age of the pile crap high and knock it out cheap warehouse type of sports shop.

I used to go in there when I was a kid on the way to my nan's to look at the Subbuteo teams and if I was very lucky I would be bought one. My old man used to get his rackets re-strung in there too. Always had a good reputation and the owner is a Charlton fan to boot. Big cricket specialists.

Anyone on here know use/it?

Sponsored my cricket team many years ago. Genuinely nice bloke. Used to buy 99% of my cricket gear from him. He used to knock bats in for you etc etc.

    Really? That's a shame.

The website is still up. Maybe he works from home now.

john copus sold up and his old shop is now converted into flats .a great charlton supporter and sponsor .
he is well and does do some work from home .his old shop did sell cricket gear primarily and he was well known for repairing bats and keeping gloves ,he did restring tennis racquets and sell trophies amongst other things .his was the type of cricket shop that will be very sadly missed ....ah the smell of linseed oil !! .

he was a very talented cricketer in his younger days and played for catford cc in pennerley road and went on to play for forest hill cc in rubens st

Blimey, that is a blast from the past.

Always used to go to him for anything cricket related. Never realised he was an Addick!

Yep used to get Cricket stuff there when I was at school .... plus some goalkeeping gloves as well ... and even some ankle guards (think they stopped doing them after a few years)

I didn't realise he was a CAFC fan either

Great selection of cricket stuff sold in this place. Would seem that Jolly Good Sports in Petts Wood has suffered the same fate. Unfortunately it looks like the days of the independent high quality sports stores are numbered.

John Copus Sports was also the kit sponsor for Graham Stuart, I think...

I know Sue Copus who is on the CAFPA committee.

The queen is less snooty imho.

Never met the Queen but I have met Sue and never found her snooty at all.

    Yeah.......

Always really snooty when handing over a seasons worth of cricket balls, spare pads and a cheque to keep my old side going for a season.

People who run businesses like this dont exist anymore.

Genuine couple who supported lots of local sports teams over the years.

What is that meant to mean?

As far as I know she's not a member on here but I know her son is.

Maybe you should just leave it there.

Used to live round the corner from there, and John was such a lovely bloke, I remember all of the footie kits that he used to have in the window and the excitement of trying them on in the shop.

Such a shame that places like that no longer exist, the irony being of course that if you try and get some specialist sports gear now in the likes of JJB Sports etc, you are likely to get pointed towards the rail of discounted polo shirts on a rack.

Sports shops that don't specialise in sports goods - what progress that is!

We are in the same boat, Kenny. I used to live in the Cordwell Road estate just round the corner from John Copus Sports and for my brother an I it was a veritable treasure trove for football kits and cricket gear, there was just nothing like it anywhere else.

Small confession, when I was a kid I was a mad Kevin Keegan fan and my first ever football kit was the Southampton kit from when KK was playing for them! Bought at JCS by my parents, my twin brother got the yellow Liverpool away kit with the red pin-stripes!

I can remember JCS always having a really good window presentation but try as I might I cannot recall the interior of the shop at all.

Anyway, I'll post it again when you're asleep. Then the masses will agree with me.

I'm currently watching "The Mexican" on BBC 1 and Admin v Chirpy on Charlton Life.

    Who said men couldn't multi-task.

It's not ADMIN, it's Lookout protecting Henry Irving for some reason.

    Don't know why.

No one needs protection, you are just being a prick for prick-ish-ness' sake.

    Calm down fellas.

I'm going into work tomorrow to discuss the possibility of my getting two months gardening leave on full pay before I leave for a new job.

Put this to one side and wish me luck instead.
    :o)

No I am bloody well not.

You don't live in the UK, you don't know John Copus Sports. You are therefore no more qualified to comment on this thread as Henry Irving.

The person who hides behind the name of Henry Irving is NOT a sportsman, or ever has been. He therefore has no right to get all high and mighty on this thread.

Jeez, people have been on the angry pills and it's spreading. Night night all, I'm going to bed!

John used to repair the Ian Healy's gloves (Aussie wicket keeper in the 90's) and became good friends with him. Ian wrote a lovely article about him in a magazine article once.
