Origin of the Trainspotter/Anorak label

edited June 2011 in General Charlton
Unfortunately I have a few Millwall supporting mates and Chelsea reletives, and have been called the above several times during light hearted piss takes ever since I could remember.
Can anyone inform me as to why fans of a few clubs in London refer to our fans as this?  Was there a specific reason and time when they we got labelled with this?  Do we actually have any trainspotting fans? Anyone else received the same abuse?  And also which clubs started this?

  • "Do we actually have any trainspotting fans?"

First prize for the most stupid question of the week.

  • Beds
    Why is that then?
  • Firstly do you think anyone is going fuel those stupid nicknames by admitting to being a trainspotter and secondly with a name that starts with BR , people might accuse you of having that self same hobby.
  • No I didn't expect anyone to own up to it but that's not what I asked is it? Was asking if we had any, as in maybe we had some character a few years back who is one and that's how it started.
And anyone with half a brain cell will know BR is the start of a postcode, so take your poor attempt at being cockey to another thread if you don't know the answer to my question.
  • We've got loads of "trainspotter" types supporting us. Doesn't really bother me too much, but there's no denying that we have bundles of them.
  • I have no idea what being a cockey is but let me give you some advice .When your " Millwall" mates suggest Charlton fans are Trainspotters dont take it literally. It's like me going on the Palace forum and asking if they know anyone who is spotty and is called Nigel . No offence mate but your post is just downright silly.
  • Doesn't bother me in the slightest either, every club has their petty nicknames, Palace are The Nigels of course.  Just wondered where it all came from.

    Great

Oh what a sheltered life I've led i never knew what Spanners and Nigels were until I came on here a month ago.
  • Beds, I was simply asking if anyone knew where this nickname came from, I wasn't saying we have fans who are trainspotters, just why are we called trainspotters of all things.

Yeah, fantastic. (Or am I not allowed to post or something?)

Ok fair enough. Just don't like thought of giving credence to the nickname.

I was hoping it was just a stupid nickname too, but there's no smoke without fire, there are some older fans on here who know everything about everything Charlton, was seeing if one of them could enlighten us younger Addicks
  • Well, I think it has something to do with a supporter who discovered a small derelect locomotive  and spent money and time resotring it and calling it 'The Addik'. It must be something like 20 years ago now so I can't remember all the details but it was in the news at the time and the spanners etc. picked up on it. Hope this helps.
  • Speak to Off_it .  He admits to knowing of bundles of them.

I'm a semi old Addick ( been going since 1980) and i dont know of any who are trainspotters.

If that is where it started, them Spanners are dumber than I first feared.

There maybe lies your answer. It's news to me.

You could of just said this from the start of the thread, but cheers for your input ;)

I've been supporting them for 50 years BR7 Addick and that terminology has never been used on me but as I said I've only just found out about Nigels, Spanners and Wet Spam. Follow Beds advice and ignore it.
  • Whilst I have you attention, Yippie I A, Yippie I O?
    Where's that come from?

There's a big, BIG difference between seeing them and knowing them.

As I say, it doesn't really bother me what other fans think about us. Why should it?

"Danny the Trainspotter" made that one up in 1986. FACT.

Now thats a good question I think that was in the early 70's? when the away following was organised by some chap by the name of Bailey? Around the same time the 'Henry' Henry Irving who who' chant started up.
  • Why do the Palarse call us Clowns?
  • Any why do we call them Nigels for that matter.
  • I love the noise Yippie I A can generate if a lot of people chant it.
Asked the old man who's been going since the 70/80s said he's got no idea just something that was chanted at away games
  • Why do the Palarse call us Clowns?
    Because they're unimaginative.
  • Any why do we call them Nigels for that matter.
Because they're all called Nigel and , er, "love" their mums.

That's the last time I trust Google Off it, it said it was to do with Nigel in Eastenders, who used to be Phil and Grant Mitchells best mate when he said he was a Palarse fan in one of the episodes.
  • Here's the story that March51 referred to:

I have no idea if that's the origin of the nickname or not. Apologies if this gives further credence to it, Beds.
