Italian match fixing

Former Italy footballer Giuseppe Signori and 15 other
people have been arrested by Italian police for alleged match-fixing.

The others held are said to include ex-Serie A players, current players from
both Serie B and Serie C, club directors from lower leagues and betting shop
employees.

They are accused of organising the rigging of matches to fix bets.

Eighteen matches are under investigation.

They include this season's Serie A clash between Inter Milan and Lecce, and
matches involving Siena and Atalanta, who both earned promotion to Serie A.

Police in towns and cities across Italy including Rome, Turin, Naples,
Bologna, Ancona, Cremona and Ferrara issued detention orders for the 16
people.

Signori, 43, who is being held under house arrest, was one of Italy's leading
strikers in the 1990s. He was top scorer in Serie A three times with Rome club
Lazio.

He declined to comment on the allegations

  • Match fixing in Italy? What ever next.
  • You only have to look at the number of moody draws they have. Italian football is dying.
  • I'm shocked. Shocked, stunned and not a little amazed.
  • The whole country is built on corruption, always has been.
  • Corruption in Italian football and no mention of Berlusconi's AC Milan?  Poor sod will be devastated.  Time for some more bunga bunga parties.
  • Do you people not think that match fixing doesn't happen in English football. It's going on everywhere.

So, you think we deliberately lost so many games last season?
  • McOxo must have taken some sort of bung to be playing that shite?

I really, really don't think that match fixing is widespread in English football - there may be isolated incidents, but by and large one thing we can say, and be proud of that in our country the integrity of our sport is pretty unquestionable when it comes to match fixing.
