Semedo off to Greece ?

  • There's a place for Semedo (and perhaps Racon) but at sensible wages for the level we are at.
  • We must remember that we are not competing with what we paid him and Racon last season but with what others are willing to pay for them which is also likely to be less. They are settled in the area- as people have said- Semedo is professional but he does genuinely love the club and likes living in London - anybody who has met him would be able to convey his genuine regard for Charlton and the fans.

Sounds like there's also a place for Bexley Dan?

    ;o)
  • It really doesn't matter does it lads? I'm not looking for respect, kudos, admiration or even credibility - all i have stated is that in the 'playing' sense, i.e use of the ball, i believe i have more natural ability than Semedo in my use of the ball. Ignore it, use it for your entertainment but don't worry about my mental state. I use this board for entertainment and information occassionally. What you all think has no baring on me but its certainly been more entertaining logging on to this site froma persoanl point of view than it has been for some weeks. I have nothing against Semedo as i've stated plenty of times and if he re signed on a significantly lower wage as a defender or for the odd defensive screening role, then great. If he re signs as one of our first choice midfielders then i'm afraid we're back to square 1. Oh, and by the way - the bloke who advised me to get a JCB to get out of the hole i was digging - see you've taken my advice and left the jokes to somebody else - haven't heard from you since.
  • Get off your high horse, the guy got bored of you, like many other people in this thread! So just before i leave this thread, can you please inform everybody on this forum of your playing career. I play at Uni level, did play semi-pro before and I've had trials for Charlton, West Ham and Luton. I'm not being big headed but I just want you to justify why you think your a better ball player than Semedo, because I certainly dont think I am a better player than him.
  • BexleyDan...if only you'd said that you were a better footballer than McCormack. But then again who isn't...
  • So is he off to Greece of not ?

Local press reporting that Paul Hayes is to be Chris Powell's next
signing for Charlton. Powell was prevented from bringing the Dagenham
born striker to the Valley last season but has now gone back in for him
    following Preston's relegation.

Jose Semedo is also close to signing a much reduced contract with the Addicks after a proposed move to Ipswich fell through.
  • Danny Murphy - horrible bloke.......very creative midfielder

Andy Reid - fat bloke..........fairly creative midfielder

Jose Semedo - brilliant bloke and I love him to bits.............limited creativity as a midfielder

We need a bit of quality.
Come on, Murphy and Reid played for us in the Premier League. I think that's half the problem, people need to understand that we're in the third tier now, we aren't going to get a Murphy or a Reid - if any of our players were remotley that good they'd be plying their trade at a higher level. We need to build a good team for this division (and one that could hold it's weight at the next level if/when we get there) and I think Semedo definately provides the attributes you need as part of your side. We'd certainly be weaker without him in our squad for next year, but we can't be paying him stupid money. I'd offer him a reduction in his wages of x amount with that same amount paid to him as a lump sum should we achieve promotion.
  • Hayes also linked to Derby, Henry (also a link that dates back to loan interest last season)

If they get Hayes maybe we get Porter?

I like Semedo and he brings a physical presence that we badly need plus commitment and determination.

It's impossible to say if we need him or will miss him until we see who else we sign over this summer.  Jackson and Hollands may well be CPs preferred Centre Mids next term in any case.

What we need and needed all last season is two big, fairly fast and physically dominant centre halves.  Get that part of the team right and the rest will come.

Good point although CP said Hayes wanted to come to us as he's local.  Then again Derby are in a higher league but without much financial clout.

Porter was I think also wanted by Powell before Nouble came but County would allow him out on loan.  Injury prone as well.

    Porter is on a Bosman

Didn't realise he was a free agent, thanks LA

Don't believe you. Which part of the 'i like to press the Semedo button occassionally' do you not understand. Thought I'd drawn a line under this with my first post of the day but you just keep banging on and on. No wonder you're bored - namedropper.
  • When I met Semedo and asked him what he thought of Millwall, he offered me his hand to shake, smiled a massive smile and said he hated them.

Never mind if he is better than anonymous people on here, I hope he stays just because I like him.

They liked the way he broke out of central defence a lot but said he'd need to play a more disciplined role for them. When he said there must be a mistake and that he was a central midfielder the talks broke down apparently.

Why are you getting so irate? It's a messageboard. Name dropper.
  • There's so much sexual tension on this board.

It's like an episode of Bad Girls on viagra.

  • in light of the current trend and in a bid to bring about harmony, i take it all back - Semedo is a great footballer - i appreciate that to say anything else will only cause major emotional upset for those with Semedo Appreciation Disorder. Please accept my sincere apologies

In midfield what he gives us with his battling & hasling qualities he gives away with his lack of vision and forward movement.

I think this has been true to an extent in the past but I think that has partly been down to managers seeing him as just a spoiler and nothing else. As I've said, he's never going to be an especially expansive or visionary passer but if he's brought into a passing move he can usually be trusted to control the ball and move it on to a red shirt - you don't feel like he's just going to lose it like some midfielders we've had.

He can also provide a goal threat. I know the stats don't really back that up, but like I say until Powell came in how much has he been encouraged to try and get goals?  He's not likely to bang one in from 30 yards, but if once or twice a game he were to push the ball out wide and then gamble on a run into the box for any cross that might come in then he's big enough and powerful enough to win headers. Powell has clearly been trying to get him to do that and Jose has responded. He did it vs Orient and scored and he did it twice vs Huddersfield and worked the keeper twice. I know thats only two games and three attempts, but it resulted in 1 goal from three efforts on target - why can't that be repeated through a season to add up to 4 or 5 goals which would be a perfectly respectable return for an obstensively defensive player.

Also go back to his goal at Tranmere - again a  long time ago but he gambled on a run forward and actually produced a very good finish so it's clearly not totally beyond him.

Also being a spoiler doesn't always have to be just a defensive advantage. I forget exactly which game it was, but in 09/10 there was a game (I think maybe Huddersfield at home) where we were being outplayed and were struggling to assert ourselves on the game because in the quest for a more attacking line up Parky had left Jose on the bench. Jose came on at half time and played out his skin winning every loose ball and quickly winning back possession when the forwards lost it. This enabled us to pin the other team back and we went on to dominate the second half and win the match - Jose did bugger all in their half, but if he hadn't been on the pitch we wouldn't have done nearly as much attacking. It's always too simplistic to say defenders = defending, attackers = attacking. If you can defend from the front then you can also attack from the back.

Like I say, I freely admit that Jose isn't creative but that doesn't mean he hasn't enough skill to play in midfield and be relied upon to keep attacking moves going if he has the ball, he just won't be the one playing the final killer ball. That doesn't mean he can't be any use at all in attack. Partner him with a creative midfielder and a pair of decent wide men who will create as well as score and he'll do a lot of their donkey work and will feed them the ball and give them a platform to play on - there have been games in which he's done that this season but have we had the midfielders to play on that platform? Probably not. Continue to encourage him to try and get on the end of a few crosses and he can start to score the odd goal.

If he does those things he can do everything that the much lauded Keith Jones did, just Jones had the luxury of Kins, Morts, Newts and Robbo around him so it didn't matter that he was mainly just a hard working spoiler. Semedo's partners have largely not been fit to lace those player's boots.

Players are always developing and can learn new things - how old was Rufus before he finally scored (or even looked like scoring)? By the time he retired he was good for at least 2 or 3 goals a season from corners so there's an example of someone expanding their skills into an area that didin't come naturally. Jose is young enough and has the right attitude and physical attributes to do the same. He's also one of the best, at was does come naturally to him, in this division and good enough at it for the league above, imho.

Keep the good players and add to them - don't throw the baby out with the bathwater.

  • Good detailed analysis Exiled backed up with examples.

Unfortunately is it so much easier to just type 'he's sh*t' than engage in such in-depth and considered debate.

I reiterate we should keep him if possible and agree we need to keep the best players and add to the squad, if possible unload the weaker players that goes without say.
I stick to my belief Semedo will never be a creative player.  Creative play is naturally in the brain you either see the opening or you don't, however he can improve on his forward play in other respects and in fairness to him there was an improvement on getting in to the box to get on the end of crosses, hence his goal.  Technically he doesn't have a clue how to shoot he always side foots the ball as if he were passing.  That can be sorted on the training ground, but then most of our players are lacking in some skill yet the technical requirement never seems to improve.  Another thread no doubt.
He played a couple of games in the Championship under Pardew at full back when we were short and did a good job.  I don't see many wingers getting around him and our full backs have been a problem for some time which he could be the answer thus strengthening the defence.  The midfield is the engine room of any team and players naturally box to box with thee savvy to know how to protect the defence are a better bet because they bring more to the play when in possession.  We have struggled to find a player who compliments Semedo in the midfield and I think that is because he is not a natural midfielder. It is about getting the balance right for a 442.  A five man midfield would suite Semedo better.
