Considering that Charlton were third when Michael Slater and Tony Jimenez bought the club in December and finished 13th, you might expect the new owners to be disappointed.
Slater insists progress has been made by Chris Powell, who replaced Phil Parkinson in January, but expects the former England international to build a squad capable not only of winning promotion next season but of competing in the Championship immediately.
"Given our League position at the turn of the year, I'm sure many fans will view this season as an opportunity missed but that's not how I see it," said Slater.
"A number of League clubs are at a crossroads. We're fortunate that we're four months down the road and that we're going in the right direction, albeit not yet at top speed.
"What will bring promotion is building the right squad. This will require more immediate investment and the process has already begun in earnest.
"This summer will be very important. We will start next season with financial security and proper foundations.
"The last piece in the jigsaw is a squad that will produce the sort of performances you expect and that should win promotion."
Slater has warned Powell that he expects immediate results when the club are promoted.
He said: "The team Chris creates should be able to not only win promotion but compete in the Championship.
"There is a gulf between the Premier League and Championship but only a small gap between the Championship and League One."

I am sure this is what Slater said in the last programme of the season.
Before the Bromley addicks meeting.
Ha ha, "progress has been made" and "when the club are promoted".
And as for "the process has already begun in earnest", I get the impression Mr Powell is not having much say in who is coming in. I just hope he is the one picking the team come August.
I'm increasingly concerned that Slater doesn't experience reality in the same way as everyone else or even accepts that there is such a thing. I suspect he leans towards the view that his mind is being used for a scientist's experiment and that the universe does not exist as a physical entity.
But I might be wrong.
Re-arrange these words of form a well known phrase or saying

Now it really is getting libelous!
On the article, I hadn't read it before, but for it's very interesting reading when you compare it to the Bromley thread. Slater clearly has a vision but like other's I'm starting to wonder just how realistic it is! Give it a month and things will be much clearer....hopefully!
Please keep in mind that we lost points to......
Walsall, Exeter, Dag&Red, Yeovil, etc etc........so please stop talking about the C and the P.
We can't beat pub teams !
lol the point is all those teams got promoted or made the play offs
Given our League position at the turn of the year, I'm sure all
fans will view this season as an opportunity missed.
A number of League clubs are at a
crossroads. We're fortunate that we're only four months down the road so we might be almost back with the others in time for the start of the new season.
What
will bring promotion is building the right squad. This will require looking to sack our manager again and the process has already begun in earnest.
This summer will be very important. We will start next season with nice
suntans and proper foundations done to my new conservatory.
The last piece in the jigsaw on my office desk went missing and will produce the sort of searches in old vacuum cleaner bags you expect and that should really provide an efficient form of pre-season training.
Slater has warned Powell that no more pieces should go missing and to make sure not to buy such efficient vacuum cleaner bags in future.
He said: The team Chris creates should be able to not only win at Bury but compete against Rochdale.
There is a gulf between the Premier League and League One but only a small gap between League One and League Two.
doubt he will sadly
