Leeds to let Bessone Go

As reported in the Yorkshire Evening Post (http://www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk/sport/leeds-united/latest-whites-news/leeds_united_trio_set_for_exit_1_3372589):

"Grayson signed the Argentinian left-back on a free transfer from the
Swans, handing him a three-year deal in June, but eight unconvincing
appearances at the beginning of the season were followed by a switch on
loan to League One club Charlton Athletic in January.

His move to The Valley was made with a view to a permanent deal, and United will allow Charlton to take Bessone on a full-time basis. One unnamed team have already expressed an interest in recruiting the defender."

I'm interested to see where Mike Grella, the American (and Duke Blue Devil) included in the trio, ends up.  He displayed some skill when in college back here but has also developed a reputation for being impetuous and seems to have confirmed that with his actions at Swindon Town.

  • I thought he looked good for us, possibly injury prone. Also others us something going forward, though I doubt he could perform in the championshi. Who knows!
  • Would be great if we could get him ... good passer of the ball, plays to feet, committed and plays a team game.
  • Can't say I was overly impressed with Bessone, despite the fact he had a couple of good games particularly Southampton at home, his positioning (by his own admission in one programme) is poor at times and needs a lot of work- guess we have the right manager though for that. However wouldn't be overly disappointed if he signed but can't help think there are better LB's available.
  • He was obviously not fit when he arrived and put in some shaky performances but he got better as he went on.
Still some work needed but I think he'll come good. Wouldn't mind seeing him come in.
  • He clearly wasn't fully fit, if he stays fit he will be a good player at this level. We could do a lot worse.
  • As I said on another thread hasn't done badly but would only sign him on a free. Hopefully he'll turn out to be a player we can get the best out of.
  • Doubt he would be free with 2 years left on his contract & Ken Bates now the official owner. £50K more like.
  • But Ken Bates only wants to help:

Bates confirmed the forward’s fate, saying: “Grella will not be playing for us anymore.

“One or two clubs are looking at him and we won’t stand in his way.

“Similarly, Bessone won’t be figuring in our plans for next season and already one club has expressed an interest in him.

“We’re a helpful club in that respect.

“If someone doesn’t fit into our plans then we sort them out.”

Apart from his 8 games in the Championship for Leeds, Bessone has also appeared 36 times for Swansea ......he impressed as part of their team that finished 3rd, and 7th - despite missing periods through injury.

    After the 2009–10 season finished
Bessone was offered a new deal at Swansea but turned it down in favour
    of joining Leeds.

My guess is that he is effective in the right team, the one that gave him cover when he got forward....?

Think he will be a different player with a full pre-season and if he can keep a clean bill of health. Whether he can or not remains to be seen, it might be a risk we can't afford... one thing's for certain if our budgetary constraints are to be believed and we need to be as spendthrift as ever, we cannot afford any squad passengers a la Youga and we still have his situation to sort out in exactly the same position. Erol and his counterparts will have to be in on this decision big time.

I can't make up my mind on this fellow , he showed glimpses of promise , but was clearly well short of match fitness , but is he another Anyinsah , ie good when he plays but is carrying so many injuries you won't get a full good season out of him?

As long as we don't sign Frank Nouble i'll be happy!
  • Ken Bates sounding generous? Must be a catch. If Leeds have signed him for 3 years and found out after 8 games that he doesn't fit in with their plans no wonder they are keen to 'sort him out'. I wasn't impressed with him, poor positioning, though he had the pace to recover often, and being a right footed left back surely limits him as an attacking force, I can't remember many overlapping runs. All the noises suggest we are in for him but i'd rather we weren't
  • I didn't think he was right footed?
  • Reasonable footballer but has a terrible positional sense and too often relies on a bit of pace to get him out of trouble. I can't beleiev anyone who saw him at Southampton can want him back. He reminds me of a left sided version of Moo2, fortunately without the attitude but sadly also without as much attacking verve to compensate the crap defending. Imho, he's no better than Francis - maybe a bit better defensively (and only a bit) but won't contribute as much in attack.

It's a pass from me, even on a free. If we're really gunning for promotion we need better. Lets face it, if the likes of him, Parret, Stewart, Ecclestone etc were really that good we'd have at least qualified for the play-offs this season given that's where we were when most of them joined.

Our best left back, by some distance, last season was Carl Jenkinson and he's a 19 year old right back - says it all about our more senior and/or specialist left backs, imo.

  • Totally agree with X.  Did OK but too disaster prone and, while he made some good interventions coming forward didn't pressure enough on the wing.
  • No thanks.
  • No surprise there that leeds don't want him even as cover at left back
As exiled said we don't want another defender who can't defend
If promotion is our wish nothing players like him can be squad members at best
  •

Its a yes from me , technically a very good footballer whose pace helped compensate for our slow CB's .

I think he is left footed because that is the foot he took free kicks with ,  he seemed comfortable with either foot which is a good thing .

  • Jeez, some people.

Yep, let's f**k him off and call the bloke sh*t whilst we wait for Patrice Evra to sign. Get real.

  • yeah lets aim low and stay in this shit division

  • Yeah, why not - gives everyone something to moan about doesn't it?

Anyone want to name a better left back who's available and within the price range of a mid-table third division club? I'm sure there are some out there, but I don't know who they are. I'm all ears.

I've not been impressed by him, he did ok but nothing more. It's not that he was poor, but there are other players out there (same with Parrett, not necessarily the best attacking CM we could sign). We've had better full backs on both sides while in this league, Richardson and Youga (well for a few months) definitely, others arguably better as well.

If we sign him I'll be hoping a pre-season with us to get fully fit makes a difference.

Swansea must have got something out of him, but then why have Leeds given up on him after something like 8 games?
  • Wasn't CP an England left back? Well if he thinks Fede has got what it takes then that is good enough for me.

there will be better out there off-it , jeff vetere will have to find them !

you are obviously more accepting of mediocrity than me and that is what bessone is

i want as i'm sure you do for us to push on and i don't think this fella is the answer

and i'm more right than wrong on most footballing matters where charlton are concerned

  • Oh yes oohaah - I love a bit of mediocrity me - I strive for it.

He is the first Argentinian to play for us although Juan Cobian was once an unused sub.

As for South Americans what about the legendary Omar Pouso and Gonzalo Sorondo
