Mambo number 5 Chance

Anyone seen much of Mambo is he any good? I know he went to Welling on loan I just hope he is the next big thing coming out of our youth acadamy. We could do with a few young fresh faces in our team for next season.

As a few might have noticed he already has a song or two if he gets the number 5 shirt.

    I've never seen Mambo play but from what others have said he has little or no pace. One thing Rufus did have.

    Powell's comparison therefore surprises me somewhat.

    Looked prone to disaster whenever I saw him, certainly outshone by Jenkinson along side him.  But, he's tall and needs to fill out a bit.  Defenders can blossom later in life, so I'd not give up on him.  In any case nothing wrong with Powell hyping him up a bit.

    I know we have a couple of RB's, and if you include Cousins who may make the squad next season at times, but Mambo impressed at RB last pre season. Maybe he will get an outing there this pre season aswell as in the C Cup and JPT, will certainly benefit from the game time and playing alongside some experienced CB's.

    I've seen him a few times. Fairly solid in the games I've seen, but they were pre-season friendlies and a couple of youth cup games. I've not seen him up against strikers that would really test him. Others have and said he was poor against Shrewsbury last season, and in the friendly against Barnet Paul Furlong was meant to have given him a hard time.

    He had a good 09/10 season, went on loan to Welling and Staines in the Blue Square South and did quite well. Last season Eastbourne Borough took him on loan in the Blue Square Prem, he started 3 games, was dropped to the bench, had a couple of sub apps and they didn't extend his loan. In comparison Jenkinson went to Eastbourne after Mambo, impressed and was re-called early by Parkinson.

    He's certainly got the height and physical side, but like our current centre backs isn't quick, and like Doherty, isn't comfortable on the ball.

    I see him as a player who will probably not make it here, but if he has the right attitude, keeps himself fit and finds the right team might work his way back up the leagues (not necessarily up to the Championship or even League 1 though). He'd have to be in a team with others players making up for his weaknesses, but you could say that for a lot of players. Big strong centre backs and strikers sometimes develop later in their careers, Iwelumo was one that did, and there are plenty more examples.

    Was only a few years ago I think Mark Kinsella said Aswad Thomas could be the new Richard Rufus. I wouldn't pay too much attention to comparisons like that.

    Where is Aswad Thomas now, last I heard he was at Woking or somewhere similar in the BSP? Saw him at the AFC Wimbledon friendly last season I think.

    When he went on loan to Welling my mate (welling fan) was raving him, saying he was one of the best loanee's the club has had and the coaches were impressed by him. He was surprised to hear that he hasn't made it yet.

    As I said on another thread - centre-backs are not typical footballers in that they rely less on athleticism and more on being tall and strong and hard to play against. Consequently they tend to develop later than their colleagues because physically they need that extra time to fill out. Whether Mambo possesses the attributes and skill to make it is though moot, but I doubt that he's on a massive salary so it's not really that much of a financial risk and CP has given him that time to prove himself. I'll trust Powell on this, he's seen a lot more of him than we have and being a defender himself he knows what a defender needs to do and whether he has the right mentality. Next season we are going to need three maybe four centre-backs to be brought in and I hope that Mambo gets some game time and can be part of the mix.

Every televised match he writes about 20 tweets on it commentating, fair enough, also said last night 'Weve got a trip to ewood next season then' or something similar, sounds like is a keeper then? Maybe? I hope he comes good and shines through to at least be on the bench for a league game, but for some reason, I very much doubt it.

    Richard Rufus was special players like him don't come along too often I am afraid so in my opinion comparissons are pointless

    I thought he played very well indeed against Reading in the Carling Cup this season.

    Thought he dealt v well with Reading earlier this season but if he doesn't break through soon he may well find another young contender (eg. Ajayi) usurping him.

    seen him a few times playing for Ebbsfleet.
    strong in the air. bit slow and can be turned. was a fan favourite during the first half of the season. hasn't played for a while since.

    a much better defender would be fleets captain Paul Lorraine. but like with so many players its such a risk for us to hope that he can make the step up.
