Is this the worst season ever?

edited May 2011 in General Charlton
Something that has been asked on a separate thread and I think that this is worthy of its own thread.  In my view,it is the worst ever, well in living memory.  Others have quoted the teams of the 70's, but this is the lowest we have finished .... we have been so disappointed by everything, performances, new players, old players, legends, the standard of the division everything, Like Gooner hater and a few others here I was here in the 70's and my expectations were much lower.  Now my expectations are higher, but we perform lower and my hopes have been so dashed, this has been the worst by far

Championship relegation was probably worse in my relatively short time supporting (1991- ). That really was heartbreaking. This is the worst team though and obviously the worst performance looking at the bigger picture.
  • we finished 13th this season winning 15   drawing 14 and losing 17

    in 1973/4 we finished 14th winning 19 drawing 8 losing 19

so a lower position but better results

but as you said expectations are higher now

i've been watching since 1976 so the poorest team i've watched

  • I think that the Championship relegation did have some horrendous performances,( still in therapy from some of that)  and it pains me to trot out seasons of inept, painful performances!.
When CP came and had a good start, I  like everyone else wished him well, but I did have my doubts!. Doubts regarding his experience, and  being a hero to many of us supporters.
For me the jury is still our regarding CP, and yes he does deserve time to mould the team of his players, and his style of management.

As a supporter I can only speak of my own enjoyment/experience. This season has produced little enjoyment for myself. The team seem's to be unbalanced and have little creativity in it's play craft, except play the ball along the line, and give it away!. What seems to be disturbing is that Jenkinson wants to be away.!Wagstaff seems to have peaked, or hit a poor run of form, and with the exception of BWP we still lack a quality striker. Jackson and Semedo have played well, that aside the financial  stability? I am concerned about the future, as I am sure others are as well!, in what is a poor league.
  • If we are talking about on field matters alone, then yes its the worst that I have seen. Dagenham away the nadir. Players that did not appear to care, the smallest ground I've seen Charlton play a league fixture, fans arguing amongst themselves.

I have seen some positives signs in our play towards the end of the season (maybe I'm just an optimist). Even more strangely I enjoyed a few of those games, no stress of worrying about equalisers / losing, just watching my team play football.

    Keep the faith.
  • OohAah said: "i've been watching since 1976 so the poorest team i've watched."

Surely you didn't miss the total collapse of Andy Nelson's 1979-80 side?
Sunk without trace, rock bottom, with a record low of points.

That surely has to be the most dismally hopeless season within the last 50 years?

  • I was a teenager in 69/70 and albeit we were in the old 2nd Division (L1 in the current day) we were very poor. Finishing 3rd from bottom we somehow managed to avoid relegation as only 2 teams went down then. We won the least number of games of any team in the league just 7, drawing 17 (which kept us up) losing 18 scoring 35 conceding 76 and Keith Peacock was a young pro in the squad! Believe me guys 2010/2011 was not that bad after all. Onwards and Upwards COYR.
  • Quite possibly the worst in living memory (certainly mine - and I suspect many longer toothed fans too).  But the worst ever? Not by a long way.

    2010/11
Matches: Played 46    Won 15   Drew 14    Lost 17   Points 59    Goals For 62  (1.35 per game) Goals Against 66  (1.43 per game)
Finished: 13th out of 24 in League 1 (Div 3)
Off the field: Takeover means that debts are taken care of.

    1925/26
Matches:  Played 42    Won 11   Drew 13    Lost 18   Points 35 (46 at todays prices)  Goals For 48 (1.14 per game)  Goals Against 68  (1.62 per game)
Finished: 21st out of 22 in Division 3 South (Div 3-)
Off the field:  Had to apply for re-election.  Made a loss of over £2,000 (when that was a real lot of money).
  • These young whipper-snappers have no idea what "worst ever Charlton team" actually means, do they Deadred?

Anyway, it's time they learned what it really means to support Charlton.
    Like we had to.
  • I'd go for 79/80. The previous two years we had stayed up on the last game of the season but Mike Flanagan had gone and everyone knew from game one that we were probably destined for the drop. From memory we won 6 games at home and none away, only managing 4 draws. We lost 6-0 at Wrexham in the FA Cup. But then we bounced back in 80/81 which was a great season.

  • maybe that season can be wholly accountable for our poor away support throughout the years ;-(
  • I must confess though OGGY I got Pis..d of following them all over the place and started playing Saturday and Sunday football for the next yen years and only attended midweek matches. Still reckon I could do a job at left back tho Dream Dream Dream...............
  • What a good memory I've got.
  • That 1979-80 season translates (with 3 points for a win) into 28 points from 42 games.
Even had there been 46 games, perhaps we would have still not gained more than a point.

Could you imagine finishing a season today with less than 30 points.....?

  • Good memory yes, but haven't you spelt your name wrong ? Laurie Abrahams ?
  • He can't remember.
  • No Lawrie Abrahams is how Colin Cameron spells it in The Valiant 500

player no.1 in alphabetical order Lawrence Adam Michael Abrahams

    1977/8 .... 16 matches 2 goals

  • Now 80/81 Lawrie sticks in my memory for the cup run starting with Haleseys cross cum shot in the 1st round at Harlow Town athletics stadium and the exit in the 5th Round to Ipswich Town when Terry Naylor was riding on Paul Mariners back and was still there when mariner scored!
  • A good memory for useless crap. According to Wikipedia he spelt it either way.
  • BTW oohaa you were spotted waiting to cross The Woolwich Road with your boys on Saturday. I think you were trying to count the away fans, as you didn't appear to be going anywhere fast  :-)

  • nice to see lauwrie was charltonised for his short period with us and his 1 goal in 8 record !!

    some things never change

  • @oohaa

OMG  - I can see it already. CAFC crap support we can't even take away as many Santas as Hartlepool. Then you'll be on to the umpah lumpahs  :-)

  • worst half-season since 1905 BC
  • in my years of supporting - 34 - then yes, definately
  • OompahMortimer said; "i was counting out the santas to my sons"

At least Santa plays in red & white.

  • Supporting Charlton is a life sentence. Get over it ;0)
  • Spot on Guru my old dad passed away 2 years ago aged 90 and stuck by them for 75 years to spite his old man because he was an Arsenal fan!
  • But at least he saw 20 years in the top flight, 2 FA Cup Finals and even winning the bloody thing!
