John Sullivan to return?

edited May 2011 in General Charlton
Chatting to this guy outside the West Stand before last Saturday's match.  Turns out he is John Sullivan's Dad.  He reckoned that John was impressed with the set up at Charlton and would like the opportunity of coming back next season.  He added that Ross Worner wasn't good enough/tall enough and thought he'd be released and that turns out to be true!
Now, I suspect all this depends upon Sullivan's contract situation with Millwall (anyone know what that is?) and what Charlton would be prepared to offer him but I'd see this as a good move and one that would provide Robbie with some serious competition.

  • Sullivan will be signing for us, will be confirmed in the next few weeks.
  •

Millwall have released Sullivan on a free.

  • I hope he does sign, I like Elliot but prefer Sullivan in goal hes got better all round distribution
  • Wouldn't mind Sullivan at all.

Funnily I heard Robbie was off on Saturday, possibly to a Prem team. Was dissappointed to see Robbie leave via a different exit after the game on Saturday too, as a lot of fans had waited about.

  • Elliot on the lap around the pitch looked like he was wiping a few tears away. Or it could've been sweat...I was the other side of the ground...same with Semedo
  • Seem to remember hearing him being linked to Newcastle. I could be wrong so don't hold me to it.
  • I can't see Rob going to a Premiership side to be honest.

I like Sullivan, Narrow-mindedly I tend to associate all millwall players as complete yard dogs. But Sullivan does actually have a lot going for him. He seems a good guy and his distribution as well as his organisation of the back four puts him ahead of Rob for the No.1 jersey next season.

  • According to one of Robbies relatives who often gives me the inside track, he is under contact for next
year but knows nothimg about him leaving.
  • Both Elliot and Sullivan are good keepers for the level we are at, in truth both are not far way from being Championship standard in my very humble opinion.

Would be happy if Elliot and Sullivan are the two main keepers come August as they are of a similar level, will keep each other on their toes and have shown they can cut it at this level. Both need to work on their kicking though.

  • If Worner is being released then we need another keeper. Sullivan for Worner is an improvement.

  • Much as I like Robbie, I'd like to see us bring in a much more experienced number one keeper who can really organise and dominate the defence - Robbie could then learn from him, as he is still young for a keeper.  I don't think Sullivan fits that bill.  Would make this a priority for spend, as an excellent keeper can bring out the best in more average defenders.
  • Fair comment although I thought Sullivan did ok and he'll do for me as serious competition for the gk jersey. Was'nt really his fault when that Huddersfield free kick went past him, that was the wall parting like the red sea. If you could'nt take one for the team Reidy you shouldnt have been in the wall first time round!

I share your view of ex-Millwall players. However, Sullivan was featured in the 100 to 1 Questions bit in the programme on Saturday, and revealed in answer to one of the questions that he was a mad keen Brighton fan and had a season ticket there until he started playing for Brighton. That makes him alright in my book. And yes, he does look like a decent keeper.

  • Fair point, if he's a Brighton fan then he must hate Palace.
  • He hates Palace, has a big voice on him and can save a ball. Sign him up.
Twice now I've seen him screaming his head off at our miserable defence, he clearly knows what they should be doing even if the defence doesn't. I think it was the Huddersfield game, Sullivan and Bessone were screaming at each other and Sullivan suddenly started striding out of goal towards him. I though he was going to wack him one. Luckily play started moving towards our end and he got back in goal but from that moment on I liked the man. Think he will be good for us.
  • I like the way in his first match for us he rushed out when Dailly got lumped and wanted to get involved.
  • Sullivan played very well indeed for Yeovil at The Valley, in November.
  • Think the clamour for Sullivan says more about people's attitude towards Elliot than it does about him.

Haven't seen enough to make a complete judgement. Suffice to say I felt infinitely happier with him between the sticks than I do with Elliot there. For me the defence also looked alot more settled.

Suspect Sullivan is at the stage of his career where he will have had enough of sitting on the bench. If he comes, he is going to want to play.

Certainly worth persuing on a free now that Worner is gone.

  • @Kap yeah i thought the same when I saw that. Need more of those sort of players.

  • ABR?  About Right? At Bombay Races? Aah,bloody Rickets?
  • Anyone But Robbie
  • Both are very decent keepers at this level and have their best years ahead of them.  Elliot's only just 25 and if turns up fit and not fat for pre-season then he'll have a great season.  Sullivan's only 23 and for me is currently edging ahead of Elliot.  Those two would work for me if Shay Given doesn't fancy it...

    What oohahh said.
  • Who was it that voted for Robbie as player of the year? Came third which is staggering.
  • I agree, but as our defence was rubbish, he had a lot to do & consequently did well in some games, (although poorly in others).
  • @East Kent Addick

Must have been kids and people who can't see past the fact that he's 'one of us'

I voted for Jackson personally, no coincidence that we fell apart whilst he was out of the equation
  • Yeah ......but Elliot's a better keeper than Jackson.
  • @rikofold wow, I thought Sullivan was much older than that! Would definitely sign him up now I know that.

  • Gives self a pat on the back.  Wow, that's the first time I've come up with the inside track on anything!  I'll soon be a regular on Football Rumours.
