Callum Harriott is he ready?

In my opinion when watching him yesterday he has got a lot to learn, I know it was his big day but when he was attacking several times in the first half he just went on to take people on himself when he could of put the ball through for either Benno or BWP to latch on to (when they was in the box waiting) and have a shot. His control seemed a bit sloppy with the ball several times going in the air when he was a passed to and he had seemed to take to many notes of Reid/Jerome Thomas in always trying to skill the players up before putting a cross in. Sure he may have potential but this is my opinion, would anyone like to disagree?

  • He's what 18? Making his first start and he wasn't playing like a seasoned international...

Clearly he's one for the future and CP gave him a start to show him what first team football is about. He'll learn from the experience.

  • He's a baby, barely 17.  Of course he has a lot to learn, but he certainly looks promising.  Impressively strong for a littl'un too.
  • Why did that comment come up in blue?
  • Not ready for first team football but has potential and being in and around the team will bring him on. Season as a back up winger could make all the difference.
  • FFS. He's barely 17 and that was his first start having previously played all of 3 minutes first team football. What the fuck did you really expect ?
  • He didnt look out of place. At the age he is that is a reasonable enough start.

As we are apparently going to sign a squad of players that will compete in the Championship he'll probably go out on loan next year.
  • The lad is highly rated at youth level and deserved his chance of a first start. Showed some nice touches early on but may have lost a little confidence after he tried but failed with a couple of dribbles that never came off. One for the future I hope and not another one that 'got away' like Campell- Ryce who scored fro Bristol City yesterday and the lad at Brentford who's name escapes me (Myles Weston)?
  • Remember Wagstaff's first start? Was very nervous, really struggled and I think was taken off at half time. He was about a year and an half older than Harriott is now.

He made mistakes but he did well enough, as others said he's only just 17. A young player has done well if he's made his debut at 18/19.

As for Campbell-Ryce and Weston - they didn't get away, we let them go while we were in the Prem (well Weston after we were relegated). They're only good enough for us now after our two relegations and years gaining experience of regular football.
  • Thought he played well.  I'm sure he'll be shown the video and his performance talked through with the coaches.  He's good enough to play certainly, and the more he plays the better he'll get.  I think one thing that's a real shame is that we didn't see more of Shelvey during his time here. I think that would have been better for him and for us.  That doesn't mean that Callum has to be given a start in every match, but he's certainly good enough to play as and when picked.
  • I said he would get a start at home before the end of the season I thought it would come the other week tbh, and I am glad he did I thought his confidence on the ball was superb but he was a tad to enthusiastic, and made errors of judgement but that was all technically he was great and with confidence like he has the boy could go far.

Well done chrissy for giving him a go in a game that meant very little, and for giving him more than just a cameo sub appearence

  • only thing he really needs to work on is that first touch, a couple of them turned into heading opportunities in the end, but that was nerves, not poor technical ability (I hope)

Glad we have given him a taste of first team football, hopefully he will play many of the pre-season matches (same as Cousins) and we can give them more game time next season

Looked a bit nervous at times and tried too hard , which was understandable , can't believe people were groaning and slagging him off , Wagstaff looked like he was caught in the headlights when he first played , and each season he has kicked on , if only he could work on his crossing this summer , i think we would have a heck of a player , good man management from CP pulling him off after 65 mins , shows to Harriott he hasn't made it yet , so hopefully wont go to his head.
  • thought he looked a bit like Newton in his early games, fast, ehtusiastic, skillful but very raw...hope he emulates Newton and we will have a very good player.  Good Luck CH.
  • No he's not ready to be a regular at 17 years old but he showed enough to confirm that it was worthwhile giving him a taste so he could see the gap between youth and first team football.
  • He had one of our only shots, although it went over but there is a very good player in the making in there
  • If Kyle Reid had played the same as Harriot everyone would have said that he is pony and has to leave and that is the worse first touch since kakpo

Hopefully there's a lot more to come from this young man but based on that one game(which is all I can base it on, which is clearly not fair) he needs some fine tuning first
    Good luck to him
  • Personally I thought his first touch control was generally good.  Making the choice of final ball or shoot comes over time to a degree, but again I thought he showed confidence to take the play to the opposition.  It was his first game starting and there are emotions to overcome, it can be a daunting experience for a lad of his age, a lot different than when he would have come on as a sub for 10mins, you don't have time to think about anything in the later situation.

The volley with his left foot was a decent attempt most of our players would have bottled it and tried to take the ball down and away from goal.  He also shot with his right foot after a run he made, ok he didn't get hold of it but it showed the correct technique and courage to shoot with the appropriate foot again most of our players would have delayed to get the ball on the best foot and lost the opportunity.

I believe he is a genuine prospect and could well be used from the bench mainly next year to bring him along.

  • Nowhere near ready.  Anyone that has played football to a fairly decent standard could see that from yesterday.  I'd be surprised if he starts more than 5 games next year - needs to get out of loan.  Really sad that our one jewell in Jenkinson has been taken from us at such an early stage.  IMHO we are left with very average youngsters in Solly and Wagstaff(hopefully he'll prove me wrong!).  You can understand why we've been trying to loan younsters from higher leagues - unfortunately we donlt have any that can make an impact next season.

I thought it was great for him to try and take people on. He has a brilliant touch and can turn quickly. Once he learns when to get his shot off he'll be very, very good.

  • He did okay - nothing more. Strikes me as a bit of a stunt to get the fans on board - get a young 'un out there to excite the fans.......didn't really work for me I'm afraid. He is young, raw and needs to get out on loan for a season or two. However, he isa prospect for the future - just not yet.

  • Might as well get rid of Valley Gold if we're not producing 11 superstars every year and selling them for £10m a pop.  What's the point?  I could spend my £120 a year on more anti-depressants.
  • @oohaahmortimer

Reid is a relatively seasoned pro, no doubt on a decent wage too, not a first year academy lad two months past his 17th birthday. Hence the different expectation level!

  • @lennyglover

yep i understand that i was just politely trying to say he was crap on saturday imo of course

  • Harriott played without fear saturday looked good enough for this league imo, yeah he's got a lot to learn but he's 18 did everyone except him to be the best player out there? looked very promising.
  • He's actually 17 years of age, but he looked it and was out of his depth. Playing 17 year olds, unless we are talking Wayne Rooney, will not work - not Callum's fault and I hoped he enjoyed the experience. In a year or two he will be ready and he will be a decent player.
  • He did Ok. Better than some ofthe rubbish out there.
  • Agreed, but that doen't really say too much...! Just don't want our future talent kicked off the park and his confidence destroyed.
  • ooh ahh u obv have high expectations of 17 yr olds coming in to make debut
