They have announced the players to be released and Greer was not on the list. Aside from the fact he is a fine defender and Swindon may not have gone down if they had not lost him amongst others, possibly good enough for the Champ, they paid big money only a year ago. Utter tosh he is leaving.
We need Championship quality defenders not cast offs from teams going up in my view. We are a club who is striving to return to the next level and ultimately the Premier League. In my view, it would be foolish to buy a bunch of players, good enough only to get us out of this league, who would then be cast aside. Firstly it doesn't make great economic sense to gather players on the payroll who maybe have only one season in the first team. Secondly to attract decent players, they have to share in a vision of where the clubs plans take them.
When we came down from the Prem under Curbs, the club strengthened with players who could/would be able to cut the mustard back in the Prem. I am sure that this is what the Board have in mind. I know I would if I was in their shoes.
Good post Bing, and I would add that Mr Slaters programme notes all but said he wants to build a squad to get us out of this league next season and be good enough to compete in the Championship the following season, which to me also makes economic sense. Afterall, as you say, there is no point in buying players or paying wages for players that will be here just one season, we need to build for the future and getting in a load of cast-offs and has-beens is not the answer. Lets be bullish and go for good championship players that can build with us, are willing to drop down one division to be part of a team that has PL aspirations and hopefully the financial clout to achieve it. Howvever that is the 'six'million' dollar question, do we have the financial clout? I guess this close season will tell us and I also think we will know sooner rather than later!!
@JaShea99 with the greatest respect, collectively this group of defenders are possibly the worst I have seen in 50 years. I would not be distraught if all of them were out of the picture next season.
Sorry I was just using my post to take the piss out of the apostrophe obsession. But in all seriousness, they are not all bad. Lets not forget that it hasn't changed since we went on that 4/5 hour run in Novemeber without conceding, and even that goal at Peterborough shouldn't have stood because it was never a free kick in the first place. The defence has taken a verbal battering lately but they should not all go. It's simply not feasible or realistic to think that a club in our position could get a whole new defence.
I'm sure all any of our centre backs would look more solid with more pace alongside them and especially in Doherty's case defenders more comfortable on the ball.
They don't all have to be quick, but I don't think we had one defender all season with any real pace.

Can't see Brighton releasing Greer , but Poyet may feel he is a L1 stopper and not CCC material .
Maybe they would sell at the right price
No way will Greer be leaving Brighton.

The list of players to be released are those out of contract.
Players available for transfer are those in contract, that the club may wish to move on.
@Green Day
Sorry but I have had my fill of signing players from relegated sides.
No thanks.
And we signed Clive Mendonca from a relegated Grimsby.
Oh.
As for the others different times. Were any of those signed from teams relegated to the 4th division? No? Didnt think so.
No more suffering for at least 3 months.
Go and pour yourself a beer.
;o)
@ Clem - Sorry but what is the cut off point for signing players from relegated teams ? You can't sign them in the summer, but you can in January ?
Anyway, I want Jonathan Douglas from Swindon & that is a serious comment.
;o)
