  • First post treat me gently! Been a supporter 50+ years. A poor season without doubt which yesterday's performance summed up and I was glad to see the back of it. Realistcally what did we expect having found ourselves on the side of a glass mountain over the last few years. No money at the start of the season, a manager (Parkinson) who was never accepted by the majority of fans, bargain basement buys the likes of Benson, Francis and Mcoxo who just cant cut the mustard even at this level. Then along come the new owners and Sir CP. Great start poor finish. So where do we go from here? Keep the likes of Elliott, Waggy, Solly, Semedo, Llera, BWP, Reid, Harriott, Sign Stewart but as for the rest its P45 time and CP needs to start signing players sooner rather than later we only need another dozen!
  • What injury does Fortune have?
  •  ~This end of season game brought out the old the new and one of many inherent problems of the whole season.

Jon Fortune being stretchered off was very sad, likely this is the end of his career, certainly with us.

Callum Harriet started for the first time and looks promising.  Thought his first touch looked good ignoring his second half over enthusiasm on one occasion.  All in all I was impressed with his play.  I also think that a couple of passes that went a stray were a case of players around him not having the notion to move in to the space he expected rather than misplaced.  He is obviously used to playing with other youth players that have the exuberance of flair that has been lost in our play over recent seasons.

To often when we did keep possession it lacked forward movement and penetration, which has been ingrained in most of our performances this season along with the usual blatant opportunity given to the opposition to score from a set play not taken this time due to the woodwork.   We of course had more of the chances and looked the better team. Just reflecting slightly as to our disappointing season.

  • Fortune suspected achilles
  • Took my lad to his first match so dont remember too much other than the shots that hit the bar, worst game since 0-0 v Oxford in 1987.

Hartlepool fans were fantastic, puts our away support to shame when a team like that can bring 25% of their home support all that way to a nothing match.

Thank gawd its over, thanks for the decent bits Parky.

mattholland8 Matt Holland Jon fortune has ruptured his achilles and will have an operation tomorrow. #getfitsoon
I wouldn't personally have extended his contract but that is horrible horrible news for the fella. All the best in his recovery.

same as southend took my 3 year old to his first game and with his 5 year old brother i was a lot busier entertaining than that shower of shit that represent OUR club

on the bits i saw i though harriott had an awful touch and looked properly out of sorts  imo , hopefully just down to nerves and not another pony youth product that wont look out of place in this dreadful of leagues

well another season and we're confirmed winners already of next seasons south london wooden spoon

    tough times following this shower

  • You want to cherish these 'special' moments with your sons, Ooh Aah.

Ainsley did ok for a young kid trying too hard whilst those around were on the beach.......
  • Glad I had a few before the game.

    Bored.

  • First game I went to for a while - my observations;

Benson - far too limited to play alongside Wright Phillips - whereas BWP can turn as well as hold the ball up, Benson can only pass the ball backwards.  He looks like a strong gust of wind would blow him over!  Please find us a Holt or Lambert Mr Powell!  the very fact that Parky spent the prescious money we had on a 30 plus non league striker is enough to warrant his sacking I am afraid.  A very, very.very poor buy.

Creative Midfielder - although Stewart kept the ball well and Semedo was his robut-self, there was a glaring lack of midfield creativity.  We certainly need someone that can link midfiled and attack.

BWP - I thought his touch and general play was excellent.  By far our best player on Saturday - if only we have 10 more players of his calibre!

Llera,Doherty and Dailly - I wondered if we could make all three of them run from one end of the pitch to the other and let the fastest(or least slow) win a contract!  Actually I think that Johnny Fortune on a stretcher might beat them all!

Solly - are we really that bad that we have to play him?

Ainsley(Harriot) - not good.  Hopefully he'll coem back a player in 2 seasons.

Bessone - great shot but nothing else.  Please donlt pay any money to sign him

    Semedo - please stay.

Racon - no chance you'll stay - totally frustrated that you coudl have been an absolute legend at Charlton but you played under our worst ever managers!  Good luck(unless you go to Palarse)

  • The money we spent on Benson just shows how expensive strikers are. Younger and/or more proven players were out of our price range.

In comparison Lambert cost Southampton £1m (and no doubt bigger wages than Benson) and Holt rumoured to have cost £400k. Wasn't long ago we paid over £1m for McLeod ourselves. Then there was Rotherham who wanted big money for Le Fondre.

Fortunately we should be able to afford better in the summer. We need to if we're going to get promoted.
  •  End of season nothing game, enlivened by the Hartlepool fans.

Looking forward to the next league match when I hope to see; a well organised and mobile Back Four; a midfield that passes the ball quickly, plays into the front two (not sideways), makes attacking runs, gets in early crosses and closes down the opposition without making stupid tackles; and a striker with pace to compliment BWP.

  • got some interesting photos on my phone which im trying to download of certain lifers on the train to greenwich after the match.. i think i made the right call at bailling out when i did.
  • The overall cost of Benson is no greater than any other player in the squad, his wages are lower so factoring them against the transfer fee over two seasons and his investment is no greater than the signing fees and wages paid to others.
  • Good post, Kap.

It's a point that seems to go straight over the head of some posters.
  • exactly ... just like when we sign players on a free and fans say well he hasn't spent any money on players , they would have signing on fees etc

  • @Scoham - Parky chose to pay 250k for Benson when he could have got Danny Graham or Will Hoskins for nought last summer.
  • so let's say Benno is only on 1k per week, which I doubt, then over two seasons that is 104k in wages added to the fee equals 354k. Now Docherty signed for two years on a free but I bet his stay won't cost anywhere near that figure. And if McOxo costs us anywhere near to £3.54 I'd be disappointed.
  • Docherty could be on around 3k a week, as a senior pro who has played at the top level and had just got promoted, plus he would have had a signing on fee so I reckon he would be around the similar cost of benson
Pure guesswork and I could be a country mile out
  • Yes but Doherty is another bad signing - more wasted monety I am afraid - sorry Parky.  Two wrongs don't make a Wright-Phillips!

  • @oohaahmortimer probably not far off with the average wage being around £2k a week.

Doherty was also signed early on, no doubt seen as an important signing. Probably one of our most expensive free transfers last summer.
  • Benson is supposed to be on around £60k per annum .. that is hearsay.

Parkinson said that the overall cost of benson  being equivalent to the cost of other players who had been brought in last summer was stated by Parkinson, either during the Q&A at Bromley Addicks or when talking to him at the bar prior to the Q&A.
