Powell wants to keep Racon and Semedo

edited May 2011 in General Charlton
CHARLTON boss Chris Powell has said he wants to keep Therry Racon and Jose Semedo at The Valley.
Both players are out of contract in the summer but the pair have voiced their desire to stay in SE7.
If the duo are offered new terms it is expected to involve a cut in the wages they are currently on - those terms were agreed when the Addicks were still in the Championship.
And Powell fears there will be competition for the signatures of the duo, both 26.
“We’d love to keep a player of Therry’s quality but he is in a strong position,” said the Charlton boss. “He can weigh up offers with his advisors and pick the best one.
“That is tough for us. We can compete with most clubs in League One but not all - there are a few teams with bigger budgets.
“A player like Therry will be an attraction for Championship clubs and I would say that they are financially stronger.”
Semedo and Racon have both been linked with Palace but Eagles insiders have rubbished talk they are interested.
“Jose’s exactly the same,” said Powell.
“I would love to keep him but I understand he’ll talk to his family.
“If either has agreed something with someone else we won’t be privy to that until they decide they are ready to announce it and move on.
“We will speak and see if we have a chance. I’m sure there is, because they are two guys who have grown in English football and done that with us but obviously they want the best for their careers. We will have to listen to what they have to say.”

An interesting quote there suggesting we won't have the biggest budget in League 1 "We can compete with most clubs in League One but not all - there are a few teams with bigger budgets."

  • Possibly just a throw-away comment to downplay any public notion of splashing the cash but if there's any truth in it it's fairly puzzling. Assuming Huddersfield go up in the play-off's then I'd imagine us and the two Sheffield clubs will be the biggest spenders next season (Peterborough will also be up there assuming they get a windfall from the departures of the likes of Mackail-Smith).
  • @ISawLeaburnScore (Just testing the new facility!)

Preston will probably have a few bob too.

I think that Hemmings guy who owned the Grand National winner has ties there.

  • Hopefully what he says about the budget is a smokescreen.....otherwise there will be a great many disappointed Addicks come summertime - including myself.  I shall withold judgement and see what actually happens before I launch into depression at the thoughts of being trapped in League One for the next decade...but these comments don't fill me with optimism.
  • It could also be seen as an invitation for clubs to come in and make offers for both Racon and Semedo :(
  • Can't see either of these two signing on for us on reduced wages , no way Jose!

    @LenGlover

Potentially yes, I did consider them as they do have some wealthy folk in the boardroom but they haven't exactly splashed out in recent seasons in the Championship - perhaps they feel they will have to now though.
  • The whisper thing is not working as I can see LenGlover and ISawLeaburnScore's posts to each other, or is that what is meant to happen?
  • Wasn't meant to be a private message, I think it's just a way of directing public dialogue to certain posters within a post.
  • I think a lot of people need to ready themselves to be underwhelmed by our summer signings. Some of the names being mentioned are way out of reach imo but I still think that there will be decent enough players to be had, on reduced terms, especially in today's financial climate.

The Semedo/Racon situation is very difficult. Is Powell's coaching starting to take hold of them or do we need a clean sweep. I personally think it'll be taken out of our hands and they'll move up a division, with the likes of Palace and Millwall possible destinations.

  • No-one has any idea what budget CP really has, he might not even know yet...if he has a large budget I don't expect him to be making noises of how much we can pay as that will only make agents ask for more money.

Plus, hopefully we have learnt from Pardews era of paying big wages (Moo2,McLeod,Varney, Sinclair,Gray,Christensen)

    ok just checking

  • Disappointed to read the comments above - reading between the lines it looks like Powell is prepared to let anyone go if they get a better offer - I thought the club had more ambition than that since the takeover.
  • If Chris Powell want to keep them and they end up going to either Palace or Millwall because they can outspend us then I will be so disappointed and will seriously question the ambition of those on the board. I don't however think that will happen and until proven otherwise I trust in CP and Slater. Time will tell.
  • I Can't see semedo not signing if we offer him a deal, ' i'd sign for life'  i hope so cause he obviously cares about the club and he showed it.
racon im not fussed either way what he does.
  • It would certainly be ironic if jose joins Millwall - although I can't see that happening. I suspect Jose is th emost likely of the two to stay but would love it if both did. I know some will disagree but I believe both are above this division which is what you need and exactly why we have a fight keeping them.
  • Both have the quality to suggest they could play above League 1.

However in Racon's case he has not shown it enough over the last couple of years and is not good enough as a CM in a 4 man midfield imho if we want to be challenging for the top two. I have little doubt he could go somewhere and flourish but would not be too sad to see him go. CM has been a big problem for a number of years and Racon has been a part of that.

Find it hard to be objective about Semedo as he is by far my fave player of the last few years, love the guy and tend to ignore his weaknesses with my Semedo love rose tinted specs on.

  • Another worrying sign that we might not have as much money as we thought. Could be a smokescreen though but it's becoming a pretty elaborate one.
  • to be fair powell isnt going to come out and say we have the biggest budget
    1. Beacuse we dont
    2. Beuase it adds more pressure
I wouldnt read into that :)
  • I wouldn't miss Racon or Semedo next season.
Would Brighton have been promoted with this midfield duo? I dont think so.
  • Certainly dont think Racons been to blame for our problems in CM.

With Racon in starting lineup this season (all competitions): won 18, lost 13. That must be way better than our avarage player stats.

Last season: won 19, lost 9

08/09:(he came back from injury when we were rock bottom) won 4, lost 7

  • I have always said we won't have huge amounts to spend, some people on here live in a fantasy world thinking that we were going to spend about 5 million to re-haul the squad with Championship footballers.

Racon is better than Reid on the left, (says more about Reid than Racon) Semedo is perfect if you are away from home and under the cosh, can play full back and centre back too, and whilst he's not the most creative or attacking, he is pretty much irreplaceable in his importance in the squad.

Personally, I can't see us buying lots in the summer, but hopefully Vetere and Jiminez are the type of people that can help lure better free agents to the club, and some real quality loans too
  • Yes, Powell rates Racon so highly he let McCormack have his place for over a month.
Speaks with forked tongue if you ask me.
  • be glad if they both go to be honest - any substantial re build that includes either of them two as first choice players will be a dissapointment

Mid life crisis said: "Yes, Powell rates Racon so highly he let McCormack have his place for over a month.

At that time, Racon was not very effective when he actually did play ......and the team was on a run of 4 wins on the trot.

To be fair to Powell, Racon has upped his game considerably since his return to the team.
Perhaps the manager (and Racon, of course) should get some credit for that?
  • oggy red has been practising how to use the new facilities

  • Most quotes from Dougie Freedman suggest theres no truth in any Palace interest, and that its the agents playing games.
  • Haha, OohAaah!

It was my first time on the new CL, and I couldn't find how to quote - so just got creative!

    :o)
  • hmm seems to me he's negotiating and making it clear we won't be breaking the bank to sign them whilst also saying we want them to stay
  • Think it was a CP softening up exercise to warn us that they are likely to leave in the Summer
  • I honestly don't think Semedo will leave- He does genuinely love the club - will be made captain and is settled - ok he will take a pay cut but I'm sure there will be some incentives built into his new contract. Racon has been playing well lately and you can see how a Championship club might want to take him. Not sure he would be keen on going up north so if he stays in this country, we might still be his best bet if no southern clubs come in for him. You could see somebody like Brighton or Pompey being interested and possibly interesting him. Palace would be a step down even though they are in a higher league- that could quite easily change in one season.
