Would like him to stay but I think the chances are getting slimmer by the day if it's true about championship clubs. Could be that we offered low as an opening bid and will come back higher but after all the talk about serious money I am a little concerned that players of the standard of Stewart might be beyond our means. We will see.
Agreed, If he has rejected terms, he probably knows he can do better elsewhere. I think it is positive that we are trying to sign him though, but hope this isn't the first of many disapointments we encounter in the vital Summer period. The problem is that we will be competing against Championship clubs for the players we want (and so we should be), but many players may find the Championship a more attractive proposition than League One.
Our ability to overcome this issue is going to go a long way towards a succesfull campaign next season and the key is surely going to be what funds Chrissy will have at his disposal.

He was interviewed by the matchday programme a couple of weeks back - very non-committal about the possibility of being here next season, although this appeared to be primarily because of his desire to play (and experience life) on the continent, rather than any desperation to move up to the Championship.

And if CP can do a Curbs and sell the club to his targets
Parret would be the one who could really help us next season.
They have both played about the same amount of time as one another in a CAFC shirt, and Dean has contibuted an assist or two as well as a goal. And I don't think Stewart has done either for us.
If I recall, Stewart put in the cross for Semedo's goal. Having said that I've not been masively impressed with him. It seems to me he is using us to get back playing football after a nightmare time in Turkey then move on to a club he thinks will do best for him. Can't blame him for that but wouldn't want to sign a player who is only making do with Charlton.
Not going to pre judge the intentions of our board and their ambitions but if we want to get out of this shitey division then we need to spend and spend quite big at least by division one standards. If you get in enough quality then you have a very good chance of getting promotion. Either that or get in Neil Warnock or similar which we all know ain't going to happen so I favour the former. If we can't afford players like Stewart then we are royally fecked.
i like him, he does the holding role really well and can pass a ball better than semedo will be able to and has a eye to get forward. shame if he leaves him and parrett looked very good together against rochdale
Clearly not staying and if it's an ambition thing then fine. But if it's money then if we are so rich why aren't we able to table a bid that he is interested in
Worrying if we can't afford him. We need to attract other players that are better than him and this doesn't bode well. If it is down to the fact that he wants to play at the highest level possible then fine but if it is purely down to money then I'm more than a tad concerned.
There's a difference between what you could afford to buy and what makes good sense/offers value for money. Man United could afford to spend 40M on Torres, but they might reflect that it isn't good value. I could afford a giant gold leaf top hat, but it's not something I'd get enough use out of to justify the expense. Large's comment is key: "we need to attract players that are better than him".
Although, neither of us are being particularly fair. He's had about 6 games this season and can't be anywhere near real fitness yet. I reckon he's done better than expected, but he's always had his business head screwed on and will do what is right for him: only the daftest would have thought he was coming to us due to some deep rooted desire to play for Charlton.
Thing is because we are a division lower than he wants to play out I think he wants us to pay more money than he would expect a Champ team to pay, to offset the dire league
He said in the programme he'd still like to play abroad. If he stays over here he'll have interest from the Championship. So I'm sure it's mainly about the league we are in.
I've not seen enough of him, but I don't think he's so good we should be offering a big contract just to convince him to stay here. As Mortimerician said it's about value for money.
There have got to be some good midfielders out there at smaller clubs who would see us as a good move. Just got to pick the right ones, something Pardew tried to do but in most cases got it wrong. We did it with players like Kinsella and Kiely in the past. Brighton and Southampton have players who have only really played at this level or below but no doubt some are now good enough for the Championship.

He is a tidy player but that's about it.

I find this very hard to believe - if I had a giant gold leaf top hat I'd wear it as much as possible.
