Centre half for last five games

Assuming Llera fit to take one of the places:-

Yado Mambo – has he been told he’s going? If not I’d like to see him – others have seen more of him and he seems not up to it, but centre-backs need to learn the game more than other positions.

Harry Osborne – perhaps too young but maybe a good time to blood him ready for next season. Other clubs have youngsters playing a part – how young is too young?

Carl Jenkinson – If we haven’t had an offer from Gooners, perhaps an appearance in the key central area might persuade him to stay as CP hopes.

Jose Semedo – would give Stewart and Parrett time to form a partnership

Jon Fortune – written off by some but coped well enough on last two appearances

Gary Doherty – poor distribution, but he did galvanise Norwich last year.

Simon Francis – could he be a better player here than wide – he has the height.

  • Jordan Cousins?
  • May as well try and get back some of the investment in Jenkinson. These games are not important - wouldn't want a player who has a future at CAFC to pick up an injury.
  • But equally we don't want to injure someone who we're about to receive some money for.

I would only play youngsters if they're definitely good enough and ready. I know some might argue that the only way to know that is to chuck them in at the deep end, but that can have more bad consequences than good.
  • I wouldn't pick Cousins yet, it was just another suggestion.

    Completely pointless playing Jenkinson.

Can't see Powell putting Semedo in defence when he's trying to mould him into a box-to-box midfielder.

I'd go with Llera, he hasn't done much wrong since he's been back in the team.

I'd ditch Fortune in the summer, he's past it.

If Mambo is going to be kept on then he could be an option, otherwise it's pointless.

It'll probably be Doherty and Llera.
  • Was Llera unfit on saturday?

    Yes, injured I think.

still makes me laugh even thinking about it
  • Should give Mambo a few games with the message- prove you have what it takes - could go either way but would be a useful exercise.
  • will be forts!! powell has told him to prove hes still got it (powell said he was brilliant satv oldham)
  • I reckon Doherty will be the only current centre half at the club next year so it will be him and one other, probably Llera although next year, we have to bring in a few younger pacey central defenders to play alongside him and let him concentrate on the aerial stuff.

  • Fortune was decent on Saturday, but Mambo's contract is up at the end of the season, so I can't see why he's not given the chance to prove himself as well.
  • Id like to see Jose in CB to see how Parrett & Stewart get on in CM together.

    agreed
  • Unless we've agreed a deal for Parrett for next season, what's the point in playing him?
  • He may be a possible season long loan - that's why.
  • If it's agreed then great.

we may not have agreed a deal yet but maybe we need to make sure he's worth trying to agree a deal for. Also we need to see if he can form an effective partnership with Stewart and at the same time we need to find out if Stewart is going to be good enough. Even if he doesn't play at CH I'd drop Jose for the remaining games anyway.
  • Echo those who reckon it's important we finish this season strongly. Vital for morale.
And in attracting better players to the club.

Can't see the point in deliberately weakening the team, although of course a little experimentation can be beneficial towards next season's teambuilding.

Likewise, giving a youngster a cameo appearance/sub appearance if it's felt they are ready, for the experience ......but only one playing at one time.

Powelly will not be judging which players to keep for next season on just ability, who'll be looking at attitude and commitment also. The mental strength of players can be as important as footballing ability.
  • Powell responded to the red card by withdrawing Therry Racon and sending on Jonathan Fortune, and the long-serving Addicks defender played a key role as Charlton battled hard to claim a clean sheet at Boundary Park.

"I'd like to commend all the players [on their efforts], but I thought Jon Fortune, who hasn't featured much, was immense," added Chris. "He took his chance.

"There is an opportunity for him now. He hasn't been in the team, but he can now show his worth and what he's about.

Seems Fortune will be getting a chance.
  • Playing for a contract. Powell has thrown the gauntlet down.

  • Given some of Fortune's previous performances, even if he plays like Franco Baresi for the remaining games I wouldn't give him a new deal

Its important to finish strongly, if only to sell ST's. The club are quoting that 6,000 plus have been sold so far and these will have been the core support, the remaining support will at best be waverers and a poor end to the season may decide people to just wait and see how things progress next season, whereas a good end to the season may just convince them that it is worth the investment.

The alternative is a "marquee" signing (No I don't mean a large tent) as soon as the season ends to show intent.

I would not blood Mambo to "show" what he can do, unless the management believe that he has a half decent chance that he can do something at this level.
  • Better to see him go the way of Turner or Shittu then - not saying this will necessarily happen but we aren't going to go up or down and as a fan, I'd rather see how he responds to the opportunity to impress than see Llera and Doc when we know what we need to know about them. You don't normally have the luxury as a manager to do this, so worth taking the chance when it is given. The one good thing about having some meaningless games!

I wonder how many of our fans would hold back if Mambo did have an absolute shocker though. The amount of abuse Nouble gets from some people already is ridiculous.

It may be that Mambo is just clearly not good enough, in which case there is absolutely no point in trying him out and handing 3 points to the opposition.
  • Aw, go on then - I'll give it a go.

Need someone with a bit of pace (comparatively) to play alongside me, so I suggest we get Douglas Bader in on loan to do the job.

    This!

Jose is not good enough in the air to play centre half in this division imho.
  • Agree with you Len and he's probably not that much quicker than any of the current centre-backs either. You COULD play him as part of a three man central defence (but 3-5-2 would have to come back into fashion first) and you'd have to find two suitable wingbacks.
  • If Mambo is not considered by CP to be good enough then I wouldn't be too worried about him popping up somewhere else like Shittu and Turner. There's a big difference between being considered not good enough for the Premier League and not good enough for League One.
  • From what I've seen of Mambo he won't even make it in League 1.
