Well done Benno!

edited April 2011 in General Charlton
Think he deserves a special mention as his perfomances in the last one and a half games have been very good. Yes we know his limitations and his red cards have not helped, however he has shown some fight and character to get back into the team and take his chance. Long may it continue as looking at his record, he has 9 league goals in I think 24 starts- not a bad ratio considering it is his first season above L2. Has an opportunity to get a few more before the end of the season and show he will have an important role next season, maybe not as first choice but certainly nice to have another "goalscorer" on the books.

Some of the abuse he was getting on twitter must have been disgraceful for him to close his account, really pleased he has let his football do the talking and hopfully shut up a few of the idiots who think it is fine to openly abuse our players online.

  • Hats off to Benno. I was very critical when he joined with Abbott but I was never abusive.

I genuinely thought they looked terrible on the field of play and never looked right as a combo.

He has silenced his critics including me and fully deserved his standing ovation on Saturday.

A hat trick from Benno on Tuesday night and I will chip in for a Michael Jackson style statue of him outsiude the Valley.
  • We know he's limited but as you say he's a natural goalscorer, something many strikers we've had in recent years aren't. We need 4 maybe 5 strikers next season, as long as others add power and skill between them I don't see why he wouldn't be useful as a squad player. Only makes things harder in the transfer market if we try and replace almost 20 players all at once.
  • Same number of goals as BWP in not that many more games.

    Easy to forget or overlook.
  • I'm not convinced yet.
    Sorry.
  • He's one us quite a few points this season and hasn't been as bad a buy as people have made out.

His goal record is decent which is what he's paid to do. Probably the sort of striker you need in your squad to pick up 7 or 8 goals in a promotion push.

benson has played ten more for us i believe...

We should keep him next year though, him and bwp played quite well together i thought

I knew he'd played a few more than Bradley but, given the flak he's had on here and elsewhere, I was surprised to look at my programme and discover he'd scored as many as 8 with Saturday's making it 9.
  • As Scoham said, we cannot get rid of 20 players. Benno is contracted next season and has proved he can score goals. Since his early games, his all round game has improved and we could do worse next season.

Ideally we will have BWP and someone new as first choice and maybe Benno and someone else as competition. Possibly Anyinsah but he may have to prove his fitness in pre season and sign a pay as you play deal to start.
  • He is one of the players we should definitely keep and we should endevour to find a better player to keep him out the team - we will need a squad next season - but he has shown enough to suggest he should be kept.
  • benno has shown a lot of heart wearing the CAFC red colors!

whomever is abusing our players via twitter, facebook, etc... need a life!

Yes, players get a lot of flak, so well done Benno.

    Sorry.

so how many goals were u expecting from Benno then?

1 in 2 is benchmark for all strikers to strive for he's not far off it.

First time I've seen him 'live' so can only go on this match and what I saw. I thought he worked hard, linked well with BWP and took his opportunist goal well. I think it has the makings of a good partnership and if CP can get them to play closer together, as they did in the 2nd half, then its a partnership that has goals in it. Like BWP he was chasing and closing down lots of times the 2nd half and that's (in my opinion) what helped to put Orients defence under pressure forcing them to make mistakes and concede space and time to our midfield.
I would keep him for next season and let CP work with the pairing for these last few games and the coming pre-season.
How good would it be to have strikeforce pairing next season that other teams would be worried about, and I think in Benno and BWP we may just have that.

Benson is limited, yes, but no more than BWP in my opinion. Both of them have aspects to their game they do very well, and that is what we need them to do. We'd all love to have a striker who can go on mazy runs, give centrebacks coronaries, score for fun and set up assists by the bucketful but it ain't going to happen. Good honest pros with the right attitude and the right skills for their particular role are what will get us out of this league.
  • Agree with Redmidland and a few others that he needs to be given the chance to improve and form a partnership with BWP.
Our passing style under Parky didn't really play to his strengths, the "hoof it up to Benno" strategy wasn't really what Benno is good at, he is more of a link up play with good finishing sort of striker.
I think he will get at least 2 more goals for us this season.

Good point, thought they played too far apart first half but looked much better second. Partnerships often need games to develop so this is worth perservering with.
  • He needs to learn how to trap a ball...too many times does a ball played to him bounce off his feet and go to an opposition player...and work on his positioning...the goal on Saturday picking up on the rebound is a perfect example of what he should be doing more of in his game...otherwise I'm pro benno
  • I have been one of Benson's biggest critics ... not abusive, but quick to point out his limitations.

Fair play to him for Saturday's performance, and his brief cameo at Rochdale. He looked good. Much of this is down to his increased mobility. Compare Saturday to his performance at MK Dons ... his front-running last weekend was a joy to behold. It's like we are talking about a different player. I really hope the coaching team have got to him over the last few weeks.

    Two over-riding concerns, though.

    1) Can he maintain the progress?

    2) Nine in 24 is pretty good but, with a double at Plymouth and another at Carlisle, it means that he has failed to score in 17 of those 24 appearances. It would be interesting to know what his 'assist' score is.

To be fair even Raul would have struggled to get chances during our winless run.

Didn't seem to stop BWP. Also, a lot of Benson's blanks came before the recent poor run. I seem a to recall a nine or ten game goalless run around Christmas?

  • One postive aspect of Benson's record is that he seems to always get chances, ok he has missed a few decent ones but that could be attributed to confidence and the fact the team has been struggling at times. It is a lot better that he is getting chances, albeit not always scoring as opposed to not having even a shot in anger.

    Yup, no problem with that.

'Never afraid to miss' as Malcolm MacDonald told us.
  • He is better than he's been given credit for, he works hard, is intelligent and he does finish well.

    He's also got no pace.

As with every single current player there are better players out there. If we can afford or attract those players is a whole other question.
  • I've seen Benson do more in a Charlton shirt than Joe Anyinsah, who is (nearly) topping the CL player ratings charts. However, I did miss our big away wins.

Benno is alright in the air and can finish quite well. Perfectly capable as a squad player.
