The six clubs above us.........

edited March 2011 in General Charlton
5. Bournemouth.....36.......61
6. MK Dons...........37.......61
7. Orient.............33.......53
8. Hartlepool.........36.......50
9. Exeter.............36.......49
10. Carlisle...........35.......48
11. Charlton..........34.......48

I apologise for my patronising view of the clubs involved, but i can marginally accept we are struggling to keep a pace with Brighton and Huddersfield, two clubs on the up who have steadily rebuilt properly, Southampton with thier big support and decent financial backing, and Peterborough with an owner who has put in, and have excellent strikers.

But seeing us losing pace with clubs with such tiny budget and tiny support is for me the single most depressing thought of where we are at this point in time. Orient and Hartlepool both get 2-3,000 home fans, our player budget must be at least 5 times theirs, while Carlisle and Exeter are not just low payers, but have the additional problem of trying to attract players their because of their location. Bournemouth lost their manager, and just 2 years ago we looking at this point to be falling into non-league, and MK Dons aren't even a proper club.

So depressing.

  • Sadly, putting down your rivals doesn't improve your own situation.

We are in free-fall, have been for a while and there is no knowing when it will end.

But just as booing ex-players only makes it more likely they will score against us; I can't help but feeling that looking down our noses at other teams in the league means they will win against us.
  • It is a depressing time, everything which seems a little promising we touch and make it worse. Appointing a club legend as manager, nope we don't have the King Kenny or King Kev effect (at least not yet), we fill the ground up for Exeter thousands back for the first time in years and we lose.

It would be nice to know how much money there is to spend in the summer it would make me feel a little better renewing my ST knowing we had money to sign some quality better than what we have at the moment.

I've noticed teams in lesser stature around us in recent times have a much more collective spirit and togetherness about them and gameplan, suppose it doesn't help that we have 30 new players coming and going every summer. Which will probably happen again this season.
  • Have all been far better than us this season.

    End of discussion.
  • Main difference is that we have a team of individuals out there rather than a cohesive team unit of individuals working for each other
  • Make Simon Francis skipper
  • They're all there on merit and we are where we deseve to be, but is bloody depressing to think that we're not better than these sorts of sides, because we should be and it dioes really bring home how far we've fallen.

Sorry to say I think we may sink a bit lower yet before it gets better - lets hope the remainder of this season is the last of the real gut wrenchingly terrible stuff and things genuinely start to improve next year.
  • Apparently this is the point in time where I'm supposed to tell the person trying to make a valid point: "go and watch Millwall!"

I'm getting the hang of this place...

    Opinions are like religion, and your penis;
Don't raise it in public, and don't force it down someone-elses throat!

Difficult and frustrating times yes but looking longer term would you rather be in our position or theirs. who out of those clubs has the best chance of improving their situation substantialy and maintaining that improvement?
  • I think suggesting that we are going to come away in a better position in the longer term is merely wishful thinking.
When we went down to the Championship we were supposed to re-group and get back to the Premiership in a stronger position.
When we went down to League One we were 'clearly the best side in the league' and would bounce straight back.
There is simply no way of knowing when the down slope will end and that affects how far we can then pull ourselves up again.
  • At this point of the season you are where you are in the table on performances, good and bad. There are some weak clubs ahead of us - but they have better teams and too often this year we have dropped points against sides that have scrapped and battled and generally shown a bit more desire than we have.

  • It could be worse... we could be Sheffield Wednesday... What's happened to them?!

So you think we're going to be league 1 or worse forever then? Ofcourse there are no gaurantees and God know how long it's going to take, but as a club we are in a better position overall than most around us and do have advantages.
  • I've avoided looking at the table for the last few weeks. Bloody hell that's not pretty reading! I don't really buy in to the team's name and history as Scunthorpe and Doncaster are in higher leagues than us and Sheff Wed are a far bigger club. Not that long ago I was working out how we would be in the automatics if we won our games in hand.
  • McOxo can lead us to the promised land...Keep the faith
  • [cite]Posted By: Riscardo[/cite]Make Simon Francis skipper

    How would that help?
  • For clubs like ours, it goes in cycles. When we were in the Prem I always knew the bad times would come, although admittedly I didn't know it would be quite this bad. The good times will come again.

    Unless of course they don't.
  • Deep, Uboat, deep.
  • He ain't called uboat for nothing!
  • I've got a feeling that Orient are going to win the play-offs. At least that would be exciting.

Hard to get my head round the idea that Orient could be in a higher league than us next year.

  • Huddersfield have signed Danny Ward on loan from Bolton, good signing for them.

Good signing for anyone in this league.

Lets hope not, Orient's about the only away game to look forward to next year !

I clearly didn't say that. I said how far back up we go depends on how far down we fall.

And I implied that we, as fans, need to get over the idea that we are bigger and better than those around us simply because we once were.

We do, of course, have advantages over some clubs around us. We also have disadvantages, higher wages costs and higher expectations not the least of these.

So true. Last season I used to look to at the sides we were playing and think how awful they were and how awful the standard of football in this division is. Now we are one of those sides and the sooner we all realise that the better.
