Martin Johnson Vs Chris Powell

edited March 2011 in General Charlton
When Martin Johnson took over the England Rugby team, they slid into a laughing stock in the Rugby world. Given time he managed them, moulded them into his team playing his style of rugby.

He was been given the time and help from the board, the players and most of the supporters.

Look at them now!

Now, look at Chris Powell.

The team have slipped into a team who are turning into a laughing stock. He needs time to stamp his mark on them, he needs his team not another persons team. He hasn't been given time to mould them into playing his style of football, which he has stated would be a passing game.

He needs support from the board (which I think he'll get) in terms of both time and money to spend.
Most of all he needs us, the supporters to support him. Over the last 24 hours I have seen some total crap wrote about him, his backroom staff and the players. We all know have to face facts.....We ARE staying down this season, so lets just get on with building a passing team who like to play the ball around. If we pass the ball across the back four to find space, don't boo them. We have tried the high long ball, and it doesn't work, so lets try other ways!

Now its all about time and re-building, so lets give him the time, and I'm sure he'll give us the team!

  • The main problem with CP is he has shown very little to suggest that next season is going to be any better
  • Funnily enough I was thinking exactly the same thing today.

Perhaps but didn't they say the same about Martin Jonhson? (I've no idea as I don't follow Rugger but I thought that was Kev's point)
  • sensible approach, but i doubt others will have the same amount of patience, but english rugby hasnt had the same fall as charlton have over the past 4 years
  • I think the problem for CP is that if he does not turn it around soon and start getting results that show he is credible as charltons manager then he won't be here in August.
  • I don't know how many games England play a year at rugger but I'd guess 10 or 12.

Johnson gets a year but Powell has all those 12 games with 7 or 8 weeks. Far more difficult to change things and far fewer players available.
