The 2011/12 squad...

If the board are serious about their plans to take us back up the leagues it obvious that they'll need to invest heavily this summer, looking at the current squad, who do you think will remain at the club...?

I can only see Jackson, Semedo (if he signs a new contract) & BWP making the starting 11 next year, with the likes of Elliott, Waggy, Jenkinson & Solly making up the squad numbers, for the rest of them - goodbye & good luck...!

If the investment isn't there - we've got a tough few years ahead :-)

  • Im hoping we can draft in Messi, Xavi, Villa and Iniesta tbh

We'd still need a centre back of 2 to partner Mambo.

Maybe Rio fancies a move back to London
  • And give them a year to gel.
  • Well seeing as we only sign defenders on the brink of receiving their free bus pass, maybe we can get Nesta and Cannavaro in? Perhaps tempt Maldini out of retirement?
  • Not sure when I heard that the new board would invest heavily or at all in the squad.

All the talk by Slater was about expecting Powell to improve what he has through coaching.

If you think we'll be splashing the cash, dream on.
  • We will be in for a season of reconstruction again with so many being out of contract, as covered in another thread. Hopefully there will be some money to splash or we will be condemned to an empty stadium and years left in this purgatory.

I would only keep Jackson and BWP of this lot, Semedo maybe as a squad player, but of course its not that simple, players under contract may not want to move on till the end of a decent contract at this level and players may not want to come to us with an unproven manager.
  • There's nothing in the new boards statements, which quite frankly have been nothing more than
generalisations, that state they're going to significantly invest in the quality of the team, so why are so many fans thinking otherwise? This site is full of posts about how we're going to get all this quality in the summer... How does Slater's "evolution" statement point to that happening?

    We need to keep:

    BWP
    Semedo
    Jackson

As definates. The rest are expendable to some extent, but having so many new faces is likely to cause disruption. I would be happy to see 5 or 6 new players added onto the existing squad.

2011-12 squad : BWP, Jenkinson, Wagstaff, Solly, Anyinsah (if he can improve his fitness), Jackson and may be Llera. Fresh bodies needed in every other position.

We're not going anywhere with journeymen like Francis, Mac, Doc and Benson in the side and Slater and Powell can see that as well as anyone. Don't think Racon and Semedo will have any stomach for a third season in div three and it's time for a change in central midfield, anyway.

The new board will spend what needs to be spent to make us competitive, I'm sure, and will not be hamstrung by whatever past statements they have made about improving the dross we currently have on the books. They will have seen that is an impossible task, as it's increasingly obvious that not even a Ferguson or a Mourinho could get this lot playing decent, attractive, winning football.
  • Line up....

    new Gk

    New Rb
    New CB
    New Cb---Youga / New Lb

    New Rm---Jackson/New Cm---Semedo----Jackson/Reid

    BWP
    Anyinsah/New CF

Well then we are F****** very simple....

Good Murray has found a way so its not his responsiblity but the truth of the matter is we need money to rebuild and if not then its mid table... starting to get darker and darker at the mo...
  • I'd definitely get Jenkinson on a new contract and Solly is possible.

BWP, Jackson, Semedo, I'd definitely keep if possible. The rest I won't lose any sleep over tbh

That's down to Powell. Other managers have had to picked up players on free transfers and low wages and built decent, competitive sides by selecting those that fitted into a system and coaching the players to play that system. Tisdale at Exeter is a prime example, Howe is another.

Funny that you yourself were claiming that Powell had done just that after two games and stating that "everything has changed".

Oh dear indeed, my old fruit!

In life you do what has to be done.

Everything has changed - except, of course, the players. Which has to be the next stage of the project.
  • League position and points away from promotion has definitley changed
  • Money, money, money..... has to be spent.... previously when we were on the slide it was money spent in desperation of losing our status, we need to now to build, a couple of strategic purchases can make a big difference... but money has to be spent unless Powell can keep us up, and then regroup and come up with some kind of genius plan for next season..

Parky did just that, but it wasn't good enough for some...

I'm sure money will be spent. Slater and Jiminez and whoever else owns us only got where they are by doing what has to be done..

This team is like a car that keeps letting you down. You don't want to have to shell out on a new one. If you can find a good mechanic, you think he can patch it up by replacing this part or that part and it will serve you for another couple of years. Then you discover another part that isn't functioning properly. Then another, and your mechanic points out that there's an underlying problem of rust.

When you originally said you didn't want to buy a new model , you meant it. But as things keep going wrong and the full extent of the corrosion emerges, you realise it's a false economy not to get rid and buy something more reliable and better made.

I would guess they probably came to that realisation after the Exeter game. 25,000 people in the ground - and the car couldn't even get out of second gear.

    how about two ;-)
  • Most people would be amazed that if we added a touch more quality and pace to our side how much better the rest would appear

yes indeed but we need the pace at the back and a touch more quality in the middle of the park and then we are going to look better
  • When play offs are totally of radar - I'd like to see Mambo given a few games - see how he copes
  • Benson's red mean's unless Joe recovers quickly, a kid or two is likely to be called to the squad. Tuna has the experience, Popo the eye for a goal and Azeez the physical presence - who will get the nod?

    Or Lewis Perkins?...

Will all depend on how the club see their futures, will Tuna and Perkins get another year, will Popo turn pro or be released. Azeez is the youngest so doubt he'll ahead of those 3, though Harriott's been on the bench a few times of course.
