Possible THreat to our Academy

On the NW version of Late Kick - Off on BBC1 there was a discussion about the new rules that the Premier League wish to introduce for Academies.

Apparently there will be 4 levels of Academy depending on facilities. Level 1 will be able to recruit at all ages and then the ages will be restricted for the other levels with level 4 only being able to recruit 16yrs +, also the milage restriction will be lifted. The general feeling of the discussion was that League 1 & 2 clubs would only be able to afford Level 3 or 4 and would suffer whilst the Premier clubs would get all the best talent.

Anyone got an idea how this will affect us?

Steve Avory wrote a piece in the programme attacking the new proposals and Steve Kavangagh attacked them at the Q & A at the Valley.

Shame Avory's article new went on the OS (or if it did I missed it as it was excellent)

Matt, any chance of a copy for here?
  • Because its written THreat , does that make it worse than normal?
  • Can they stop us recruiting in younger ages or merely not give us accreditation?
  • I think you will always get the academy you can afford whatever the rules. Clubs will keep academys if they are viable and ditch them if they are not. I presume ours is viable - If you look at the last 10 years it will ave averaged well in excess of a million pounds a year from player sales and saved the club money with players who went on to play for the first team. Also give the income recieved from Valley Gold and it must be viable.

The other side of the coin is that big premiership clubs spend a lot of money producing players who are largely not quite good enough for them so it may be an option to focus resources on picking up these players. If there weren't any academies I don't think standards would drop - they exist largely so that clubs can have a claim on the best players. They play a numbers game but Everton didn't produce Wayne Rooney - he would be the same player if he didn't belong to an academy.
  • I think it's ridiculous, will they bring it into force for transfers too? Every player gets a rating out of 100, Premiership can sign whoever, Championship can only get players up to 75, 50 for our league and 25 for league 2? Or how about we go back to clubs having to be voted in to get promoted? Or shall we cap the amount of registered fans clubs from each league are allowed to have? I'm all for building a better future for England, but this should be through better coaching and more youngsters playing regular football, not through a scheme that will increase the gap between 'proper' football and Premiership ballet
  • If we produced a player with a rating of 100 he would be nicked off us anyway at a fraction of his true value.
  • Why should any business be restricted in order to allow another business with more money more rights? Not sure this will go down well with European competition law / rights or whatever its called.
