Changing the teams style of play & the future!!

Hi all

Been reading this forum for a long time but this is the 1st time I have posted so go easy on me :)

in my opinion our style of play is changing for the better!!

Chris Powell is trying to install a patient, attacking, passing approach to our game. If you watch how Brighton tore us apart earlier in the season thats the way Powell is trying to get the team to play.

I agree it was frustrating at times yesterday as we kept passing backwards BUT if the killer pass is not on whats the point in playing an aimless ball up the field.

I really think its an exciting brand of football that Powell is trying to bring to the club. Unfortunately I dont think the players we have currently are good enogh to play the system. I know you could then argue that if the players are not good enough to play that brand of football then we should change our style of play but Powell obviously believes this is the right way to play the game & he is determined to make it work!!

To My main point:

I know not everyone on this forum will agree with this but MARK MY WORDS!!

Next season when powell is able to bring in the right playeers to play the style of football that he wants to play We will become a very good side under Powell & will be exciting to watch

I have not completely written off this season yet. Who knows, if he is able to bring in the right players in key area's this season the style of play may start to work straight away. However if that doesn't happen, next season I truely believe it will all come together!

As I said I dont think the players we have currently are good enogh to play the system. I cant think of too many players in the current squad I would keep to be honest

All I am saying is next season I really think we will play an attractive brand of football under powell & I cant wait!!

I would much rather us try to play a patient passing game then hoofball. As I say, there are players in the current setup who are not up to playing the system but give it time. Powell will get it right. Unfortunately it might not be this season as Powell has been left with quite a lot of dross that only know the hoof!!!

I understand fans want immediate success. We all pay a lot of money to watch our team play & nobody wants to just disregard a season. I can understand that. Changing a team's style of play takes time though & sometimes I think its good to take a step back & look at the bigger picture for the future.

Keep the faith!!

  • Welcome. And you talk a lot of sense.
  • I hope you're right.
  • great post
  • I agree with all of this.

He maybe determined to make the passing game work, but if the "players aren't good enough for the system," then it's pointless to employ unless you have players than can do it...
It's as pointless as saying if only Frank Bruno could fight like Muhammad Ali...
People are dissecting everything now they don't have Parky to diss, but changing a team's style of play more often than not involves improving the personnel, and we haven't done that in a long time!
  • Good post and I agree. I just hope the fans stick around long enough to see it happen. One thing is for sure, we couldn't carry on as we were. Sitting back against the ten men of Brighton and Colchester is no way to approach the beautiful game, or failing to play your only creative midfielder when the team isn't creating chances. I imagine Powell's approach under the same circumstances would have been far more positive, which is what we need.

    .
  • I'm inclined to agree with this thread and I'm fine with it

He might as well play the way he wants to now so that we can see which players can slot in to it ready for next season - common sense really and I have no issue

My slight concern though was there were times a pass forwards was certainly on but not made - we automatically went backwards or sideways without considering attacking (McCack was guilty more than once) and it's about getting the mix right that's important

As I've said several times on here - this season is a write-off IMO, next year will be Powell's make or break

  • It's the job of the manager to get the best out of the players he has. If they are incapable of playing a passing game then we shouldn't be playing one. I hope this post doesn't evolve into a deluge of people banging on about some magical Two Year Plan again.
  • I agree although there are times when we need to attack much more quickly. Particularly against teams who come to defend like saturday.

I like the high line we kept Saturday but worry about lack of pace. Francis never comfortable on the ball didn't help move it forward after his howler, kept giving it back to Dailly. I think when Joe, Bessone jackson are back and Jenks returns to RB we might make the system work, but some out there aren't up to it.

People will always bang on about a one to five year plan, they'll even write off the season, which they wouldn't have tolerated under Parky, as long as it fits in with their general beliefs and opinions of what they think has happened or is happening... Plus they have someone to protect again...

Whoa there - It's nothing to do with protecting anyone. I've said this season is a write off since the day Parky was sacked. Powell has come in, he needs some time to find his feet in the role. He needs time to scout players who will fit in to his scheme. He needs time!

Can I point you towards Brighton and Gus Poyet. They were really struggling until he came along and he was given some time, and money and told to make the team in his image. He has carte blanche and Brighton are now reaping the rewards. they are nailed on for promotion and should do well in the Championship with their brand of football

If we had a season like theirs would we be complaining?

This made me roar with laughter. You just couldn't bring yourself to out your hero Semedo, who's been guilty of this all his career.
  • Agree Swis, there's a lot to be said for waiting a season and going up properly prepared for life in the next division. If we go up this year the squad will need a heavy overhaul to survive and it will be difficukt to belnd a new squad at the same time as adapting to a new division. Go up well next year with a better balanced squad and the team will just need tweaking on promotion, rather than re-inventing.

Nothing to do with him being my hero - more to do with the fact it's whats expected of him. He keeps things ticking over. Admittedly there are times his natural defensive instinct drives me barmy but I'd rather have him excel at one thing than be decidedly mediocre at most

McOxo is supposed to be the offensive of the two yet he decided to go backwards without lifting his head - and it was always a 5 yard pass. Semedo has added cross field balls to his game this season and never hides from the ball
