keep passing the ball backwards

edited March 2011 in General Charlton
Why do we keep passing the ball backwards and square it does not hurt teams it gives them a chance to regroup and get men behind the ball. This then makes it hard for us as we do not have the ability to make killer passes to open teams up. This today lead to there opening goal by going forward turning back trying to play a silly square pass that got cut out and they broke and scored.

We need to be more forward thinking by going backwards towards your own goal your not going to score or beat teams its rubbish and boring to watch.

Why play racon on the left where hes non existant and does not go down line just cuts back onto his right, he needs to be in middle in his correct position and reid on the left and Mc shit dropped he offers us nothing.

  • Confidence...I think.
  • midfield is and was and will continue to be the main problem, Racon should not be playing in any position in my oponion and neither should MCoxo or even possibly Semedo, I just do not think any of them are quite good enough for a promotion-aspiring team.
  • I was really pissed off today. I cant believe how some fans booed our players, because we were playing keep ball! Are you being serious?? When we play the long ball, a majority boo. When we try and keep the ball, and move it around, our fans boo. I really do wonder what some fans expect of a division 3 side. In fact, at half time the bloke that sits next to my dad was saying "if you watch barcelona, there players move off the ball, why cant we play football like them" I'm sorry, but I nearly floored the fella! You cant get much more stupid than that! We are in league one and do not posses players like messi et al. Some of our fans need to get real, because we are a league one side, and thus will play like a league 1 team.

Our players are in a lose-lose situation: if they play the long ball, they get booed. If they play it around and play the patient game, they get booed? It makes me ashamed that our fans can do that.
  • So cos were not barca we cant move off the ball? Dont be so stupid
  • No harm in keeping the ball at all. It will build confidence each and every pass we make whether we go back or forward. Some of our fans will boo no matter what and i just wonder whether they have played the game before
  • If any of you were at the game when Brighton beat us 4-0, you might remember that it is exactly how they play...

Spot on. I was impressed with the attempts at retaining possession and building up patiently. Ok there was no end product but it is better than the hit and hope style which is often equally as fruitless.

Think encouraging players to play football instills the right mentality.

Those booing it dont have a fucking clue about football or supporting a team. Absolute muppets.

Thats not what I am saying...the moron expected us to play like barca, move the ball around like them etc...he also made loads of other very stupid comments and quite clearly has never kicked a ball in his life.
  • no one has mentioned booing, or about keeping the ball but just dont keep turning backwards go at teams and put them on backfoot dont give them a chance to get back behind the ball stretch them pull them about make them work a square or backward pass is easy to defend against.

Spot on. I thought that once we got relegated from the premiership, we would have got rid of some of the morons, but we clearly have not.

Another guy near me kept saying wright-phillips shouldnt be playing and scoring goals is not enough to get him into the team. (in fact, he was calling him bart-williams most of the time, shows you how much he knows). When I pointed out the fact that goals win games and that he hasnt going to chase everything down because he has a dodgy knee, he just muffled something to himself and shut up.

But you have to be patient. They played very deep and had 10 men behind the ball most of the game. Thus, the forward pass is not always on, so the players have a choice of tryng a very complicated forward ball that is unlikey to pay off or play it safe. You have to play it back and square to move the ball around and therefore creating the space etc. All good football teams (arsenal, barca etc etc) play the ball around the park, they dont always try and go forwards, because they realise that its not always possible.
  • Sometimes you have to take a step back to take two steps forward and I'm happy to see us play the ball sideways and backwards rather than losing patience and hoofing up field only to give possession back to the oppo

Our fans booed because no one was moving about and plus it's all very well passing about but we have to take some risks. We were just too careful today and we did not get many shots.

The Tranmere players had a tactic to use is when we pass back hassle our defenders which they did for their goal. The more pressure we put on them the more chance we would of have scoring but we did not push on enough especially when we were counter attacking.

A team of 8 year olds can play keep ball in their own half. Especially against a team that have lined up to defend a lead. The second we tried to move forward we gave the ball away.

But when they take risks, and try and so something creative and it dosnt come off....they get booed....its a lose-lose situation for them. And I disagree, there was movement, but due to our players being league 1 standard, the man on the ball often didnt pick it up (its much easier to see runs etc when your sitting in a stand and have an overview...players on the pitch dont have that perspective....thats a major diference between good footballers and great footballers: vision
  • We never tried to be creative. The ball wad passed like a hot potato from one player to another at times. I agree its the right way to play but the midfield need to show
  • [cite]Posted By: charlton_carl[/cite]The ball wad passed like a hot potato from one player to another at times.

    Lack of confidence.
  • Lack of ability
  • Holding the ball, playing passes and triangles - all good for the brave new Charlton future. What's wrong wit choo? It's boring watching teams lump the ball long all the time. We're not Stoke City, are we?
  • [cite]Posted By: charlton_carl[/cite]Lack of ability

Well I certainly think McOxo is playing above his station. There isn't a fwd pass between Oxo Racon and Semedo and until that changes we are going nowhere. I love Semedo for his attitude, commitment, work rate etc but he is part of the problem and I'm not sure we'd be worse off without him.

  • Movement off the ball has been a major problem for a long time and in the first half the commentator made numerous references to our "static" midfield. You have to move into space and make yourself available for the pass. Wagstaff is always on the move and Shelvey used to find space and gave himself time on the ball, it's what good players do!
Movement in the second half was much better and it was reflected in the performance.
It's something that I was hoping would improve greatly with Damien Matthew involved, but obviously hasn't happened yet.

Movement is a big problem, the thing with our non toward passes are a lot of them are hospital balls. Yesterday, there was a string of 3-4 passes , all of them you would love (not) to receive. It was like a hot potatoe being passed around.
  • I got into a bit of a tizzy about this yesterday.....i've had my medicine and now all is calm
  • we are playing the right way but we dont have the right players for this sort of game!
  • Don't agree. I dont think anyone on here are expecting the style of football to be like Baca, I know the thread started with that but think people on here dont expect so much greatness.

I do though think that it is possible to play simple football quite easily, all we are asking for is a little pass and move, and I think any professional player should be able to do that. Kids can be taught how to do that so why cant this set of players?
  • There are (at least) three good reasons for passing the ball sidewise and/or backwards:
    1. It allows you time and space to build a better attack where you have less chance of losing the ball and more chance of scoring.
    2. It allows you to move the ball around, simultaneously building confidence in your own team whilst tiring the opposition who have to work harder trying to get it back.
    3. If you're in the lead (I appreciate this isn't what we're discussing here) it its a good defensive tactic as they can't score if you're in possession.

There are two reasons for not doing it:
    1. If you're running out of time and need to score, you might need a more direct approach.
    2. If your fans are impatient idiots with the attention span of goldfish who think they understand the game better than the professionals who have spent a lifetime training to play it, they are likely to get impatient very quickly and start booing. Booing is a bad thing as it gives a slightly negative air to the match.

    Sorry.........but thats just bollox.

Football is a very easy game. To win a game of football you have to score more goals than the opposition. To do this you have to get the white round thing (called a football) between the three white posts (called the goal). As the three white posts (called the goal, remember) do not move, and are stationed at either end of the pitch ( an area of grass which the game is played upon) then it is usually a good idea that you do not keeping passing the ball between yourselves and try to get it going FORWARD.

In the words of that bl**dy meercat.............Simples !!

Of course it's a good idea to get the ball moving forward, but that doesn't mean that your forward movement has to be relentless. Sometimes you have to take a step backwards in order to take two forwards. If you don't understand that, then I think you are probably a little too simples.

Damn - in hindsight, it's so simple, we all should have seen it before. If only we could just ask our team of third division players to play like arguably the best team to ever play the game we'd be much better off. A succession of managers have been unsuccessful here, clearly because they failed to see the obvious - ask Semedo to play like Xavi, Racon to play like Iniesta, Llera to play like Puyol and Benson to play like Messi.

    :o)
