Fans of other clubs standing at away games

Can anyone here explain why there are fans of other clubs who always stand at away games, yet when it comes to us it always seems to be a minority. I don't want to start a row and have the good law abiding citizens on here telling me that its wrong to stand and that the seat is there for a reason, i just want to know why the majority of charlton fans at away games seem to sit, and why this isnt the case for so many other sets of supporters.

Undoubtedly standing improves the atmosphere, which helps the team. I 've always found it to be more fun aswell, as has been demonstrated in some of the away games this year. Southend and Brentford, both in the jpt, were both brilliant in terms of atmosphere, regardless of the games being quite forgetable. Colchester away also stands out, as its been one of the most entertaining games this season, yet 95% of the charlton fans were sitting on bums and the atmosphere was basically non-existant (or pathetic according to my mates who i brought).

I can understand people saying that older people could struggle to stand for 90mins, but are you saying that away games for man u, liverpool, leeds, villa, WHU, wolves etc etc dont have any older fans there?

Is it just the fact that im relatively young, so therefore cannot use past experiences to see the potential problems of standing, and how it just isn't everyones cup of tea?

  • I think many of our travelling fans tend to be older than those from other clubs from my observations on my (admittedly rare) away trips.

Why that should be is another question.
  • Oh gawd.

Len will be on his soapbox in 30 mins :)
  • Too late :)

    Does it help the team?

And it not "undoubtedly" that standing improves the atmosphere. It may do for you put does it for the people who can't see or don't want to stand up. I like to stand at away game but not everyone does.

I think you might find that a lot of the away support is either younger or just accepts that they will have to stand regardless as many older and frail fans won't bother knowing they will have to stand.

Stopped reading here. There is no evidence to prove this.
  • Ok, so from my experiences standing improves the atmosphere, which then assuming its a positive atmosphere, helps the team.
  • Personally would love to stand at all matches but can understand for the older lot who need to rest there feet if u like

Thing is. Spurs away me and a few others were standing and got told off by a few oldies behind to sit down. Half time whistle goes and they stand up for the whole of half time then sit back down when 2nd half starts again. Was thinking the 15 minutes half time break could be the time to rest there feet

As you say we have more older and also more "sensible" fans than most other clubs. A lot of these older and more reserved fans prefer to sit. When you get past 40 and not as fit as you used to be, it is definitely more onerous to stand up for 90 minutes. Your back starts aching, your legs start aching.
Also, if you are an away steward it is far easier to make a minority sit than a majority, which is also why I believe that possibly our away "ejections" etc rank with Millwall, because the stewards are far more likely to "police" our boys than the greater number and probably more agressive Millwall "boys".
I know there are a lot of generalisations and assumptions here, but overall I believe this to be the case.
I know when I was 16 I was far more likely to jump around, than I do now at 48.

It was good to see plenty of younger addicks at the Notts Co game last friday.

Thought we had a good atmosphere and plenty of people standing at the back, probably not shown on tv but nice to see.

Coach on the way up was taken up with younger addicks.

I'd rather stand and i'm over 50 but i guess it all depends on the indiviual.

    Old git! ;o)
  • Was unable to make it to the game on saturday, but did the majority of Tranmere fans stand up?
  • yeah i'd say so, 70% did i reckon, maybe more.
  • Everyone stands away, everyone sits at home, look at Liverpool, they may all stand up for 90 minutes when they are away, but they all sit down at home, even in The Kop if the games pretty boring!
