Can we find 7 wins?

Comments

  • worryingly, none of the others look like they have stand out tough runs either.

there is still everything to play for...
  • I don't see West Ham winning too many in Feb/March, Wigan are in freefall and Watford, well if we finish below them we deserve to go down. Two more tricky games for us then everyone is back and we go on a run - could be the best season in a long time!

On our front, the next 3 games will decide our fate i think.

Villa away, watford home then you lot away.
If we don't get a good return of points from those games i think its goodnight from us.
Easter is a killer, Le'arse away & chelsea home in the space of 3 days.

Add to that our last 2 games, bolton home (our bogey team) and man u away. Don't fancy needing a win at both of these to secure safety.

  • Charlton has the higher ranked teams among the weakest seven left to play compared to Wigan and West Ham, having to face Tottenham, while Wigan's best of worst is Man City and West Ham's is Boro. Also, Wigan has a game in hand, and is 2 points ahead. Watford looks to have the easiest remaining schedule, but they need two more wins. If I was a betting man, I'd have to go with Wigan, but then I wouldn't have bet on getting a point today. So it's probably a good thing I'm not a betting man.

I think AFKA Bartram summed it up much more precisely.

As a new fan, though, I'm curious as to why 40 points is considered the safety cut off? Can someone explain?

Historically no team has been relegated with more than 40 points and therefore that is the assumed safety point. Of course it's still possible to get relegated with 40+ points but unlikely as by the time a team reaches that point there are usually at least three worse teams out there on fewer points.
  • We got relegated on 42 points in 2002/03.
  • Palace did as well in the 90's didn't they?
  • In the old first division in 89/90 it was a 38 game season and Sheff Wed went down (along with us and the Spanners) with 43 points!

  • If both us and West Ham do well then the points total will be seriously high since we will be bringing teams like Villa and Fulham into it who are already on 27 - most years recently 38 would be enough since two of the relegated clubs had only just come up - problem is Reading are mid-table and Sheff Utd have suddenly climbed free since November. As Mortain says if they screw it up in Feb then we are can climb clear and not worry about our last two games (Liverpool and Spurs).

Someone on another thread stated that we now have the form of a 13th place club and I really believe Pardew can keep this going at the rate of 3 points every two games
  • ....a rate of 3 points every 2 games, eh?

Projected total of 38 or 39 points?
    Would that be enough?
Dunno. One game at a time - and get a result.

And don't forget the prayer mat!
