Chris Powell

edited March 2011 in General Charlton
I wasn’t there last night, however it sounds like the last few games that I was at.

Since Chris took the managers job, like a lot of supporters I have watched him closely as the matches unfurl. After the first goal we scored under his management he made sure every player ran to congratulate the player who scored. At the time I thought, good work, building a team ethos, good shout Chris, and we then won the next 3 games, so I and many others thought he IS the CAFC Messiah that we all need/want.

When we appointed Chris, my youngest lad asked why Chris Powell? The only answer I could give was, ‘he’s Chris Powell, a Charlton ledge’, yes I could have said, he’s got his coaching badges, he played for England, he was Sven’s number 2. But I thought the fact he is Chris Powell would be enough. I have started to rationalize this thinking, forget Chris for a moment.
A person is interviewed for the post of manager of a potentially big club that has played in the top flight for 7-8 seasons’, however they have dropped down the league, they still have a big fanbase and get 16k in for their home matches and can still almost sell out with a push in the right direction. The board wants this club back in the Premiership within 5 years.
One applicant, has no managerial experience, has played top flight football, has had 6 England caps and has worked with an ex-England manager, he needs a break to get into management but has never played for the club, he does not get the job.
One applicant, has no managerial experience, has played top flight football, has had 6 England caps and has worked with an ex-England manager, he needs a break to get into management but HAS played for the club, and he gets the job. So the only thing applicant 2 has, is that he played for club.
It does not make sense to employ someone on the strength that they played for the club. Or does it?
We won his first 4 games, some will say they were lucky wins, we have now lost 4 on the spin, with no light at the end of the tunnel, so Saturday will be the a test, if we play the same way and we lose 5 on the spin, what does that tell us? He is lost at this level? The club is too big for a first manager’s position? Or the players are donkeys?
Well whatever it does tell us, Chris gets my backing, even if we do not make the play offs, he has inherited a (mostly) bunch of ‘hasbeens’ or ‘never wills’. His real test will be how he changes his personnel in the summer; we gave Parky that much, we should give Chris at least the same. After all he is Chris Powell a Charlton ledge, I hope its enough to get us through this!!

  • Where did Poyet start his managerial career?

Fair enough ... but he did first have 3 years as asst manager at swindon leeds and spurs
  • The truth is none of us have any idea if appointing Chris will work or not and again the truth is nomatter who you appoint its a bit of a gamble. There are only a handful of managers worldwide never mind in Britain who seem untouchable in terms of success and we knew that none of those were coming our way. This club has died the death of a thousand cuts over recent seasons and you could almost hear the famous old Valley itself screaming that something good had to happen. I still believe that Chris Powell is that something good but he has to be given time. The tools he is working with are for the most part sub standard and there is no way he can change that at the moment. Come the start of next season I genuinely feel that we will see a completely different set of players in the main and those players will be the foundations for our slow progression back to us once again being proud of our Charlton. If I am wrong and there is not a serious change of personel then I will forced to think that perhaps we don`t really have the clout to achieve what Slater has stated and that won`t be Powell`s fault either.
