Do Ex- Charlton Legends make good Managers of the Club?

Having witnessed Eddie Firmani and Theo Foley, two popular ex-players who were Charlton legends in their own right, but subsequently became nothing more than average Managers when taking over the reins, the question has to be asked whether being an ex-Charlton hero is the right qualification to manage the Club? If it is of some comfort, Mike Bailey had some limited success, but didn't stay around long enough to build upon this. The jury is still out with regards to Chris Powell and I sincerely hope that he can quickly turn things around or fear that he may just become another statistic in the ex-Charlton Player/Manager scenario.

  • I know what your saying , and maybe you are right , Alan Curbishley was not a legend in my book , AS A PLAYER ,committed and honest as they come , but a legend as a manager , but it is early days in Chris Powells reign , i always thought that since the purse strings were closed under Richard Murray ( which was understandable as he wanted to sell the club) that we would could run out of steam after Xmas , as we did last season.

Significant investment is now needed by the new board if they want to see a return on their money , i would feel even worse watching last nights performance and lack of effort , if i had sunk millions into this club , although i guess its all relative , its going to be a bumpy journey , but i do hope we can get it right , my kids have gone from being excited to totally deflated , and not wanting to go , because the players didn't appear to care last night , (especailly the 3rd goal) football shouldn't be like that , i can take the losing ( i'm a charlton fan , you get used to it!)

I sincerely hope that instead of shopping at Netto's for new players , we will be able to shop at Waitrose instead , it will really test how good our scouting network for new players really is ,or whether that too needs upgrading like the scoreboard , especially ones that will want to come and play their hearts out for this club , but also have technical ability , and take pride in wearing the shirt , oh for a younger version of Mark Kinsella in midfield , he helped drag this club up by the bootlaces in my opinion , to two promotions, we could do with someone like him now.
  • To me, Eddie Firmani was a boyhood hero who I absolutely worshipped in the way similar to that which many supporters have with Chris Powell over the recent past. I can remember my excitement when Eddie was appointed Manager and in his first season finished third ( I think behind Leeds and Palace) when only the top two were promoted. Unfortunately, things went downhill from there and Eddie finally departed following a 5-0 Home defeat to Leicester on Easter Saturday with Theo Foley taking over. Eddie was one of the greatest playerto ever wear the Charlton shirt, but unfortunately he failed to cut it as a Manager. I sincerely hope that history will not repeat itself with Chris Powell.
