Which two out of Anyinsah / Benno / BWP / Eccleston?

edited January 2011 in General Charlton
We seem to have a nice predicament on our hands now, we will have 6 fit strikers available vs Rochdale. My initial reaction was that we would lose both Akpo and Pawel at least on loan for the rest of the season but was under the impression that BWP was slightly bigger than his actual height of 5ft 8 suggests so we would be losing both our big men if we were to shed them both so who knows.

My personal preference would be a BWP and Benson combo, both have proved theirselves to be lethal at this level providing we can get them the correct service and I think this really would be a deadly partnership. I think it would be a very tough decision to leave Anyinsah out on recent performances alone but he still hasn't scored a league goal in 3 months although I realise this isn't all he offers up front, especially on his own like we have seen him recently. I would have him on the bench with Eccleston who I think will be now our 4th choice striker - really want to see more of him after Saturday but think he will get most of his chances off the bench or via injury cover.

Either way it's a nice predicament to be in, who would your front pairing be?

  • BWP and Nathan Ecclestone for me. Both young, both very quick and both can score goals at this level.

4-3-3 is a bit of a dodgy one though.

And 4-5-1 (4-3-3 going forward) with two strikers on the wings wouldn't be ideal neither.
  • I think the best thing about this situation is that you can pick any two in this league and expect a good result. Obviously it may depend upon who you are playing, but now we need someone behind them to play the killer passes.
  • Think Sodje is still a useful option. I rate him more than Abbott. And theres going to be games where pace isn't working and we'll need to be a little more direct, and sometimes late on in a game Sodje challenging in the air causes a bit of havoc.
  • Not sure we can keep leaving Eccleston on the bench. He's had 2 becnh apperances and scored in the last game. You have to give them something to challenge for, if its not a place in the starting line up what is it?
  • I think a fit Anyinsah has to start, his abillity to bring other players into the game are very good. I think if it wasnt for him we would have scored a lot less goals this season, just a shame his always injured. alongside him who knows, buts it's a nice problem to have for once.

Also what happens to Wagstaff he has scored 2 in 2 playing behind the striker, personally I prefer out and out strikers.
  • surely benson and BWP they've got the most goals AS recognised strikers.
  • Super Joe and BWP. While Benson will got more goals than Joe he is not a good hold up player and Aniyinsah probably has an edge in bringing his strike partner or wide players into the game. There's more to making a team than just throwing out the players most likely to score.
  • I guess it depends on how they gel in training to be honest. I would like to see benson given another go playing within the new passing system (rather than the ball being lobbed up to him) alongside either Joe or BWP.

  • Benson is really bad don't see what anyone see's in him! Joe Anyisah and BWP up top then Eccleston second half sub!

To be fair to him, he has played in a system where the ball was constantly pumped up to him. He had to win headers against defenders alot taller than him and he had very little good service. I think it would only be fair to him to give him a chance in a team where the ball is being played on the floor, where he can have more impact in the play and we may even see some more goals out of him :)
  • Benno ain't bad. His record for scoring goals over the past 5 years prove that. His a goalscorer. Its the service into him that's bad.

We have benno joe eccs and bwp. Also liked the look of waggy up top. It's a problem who to pick but it's a problem any team would want

Maybe its the 8 goals in 18 league games but yeah other than being the top scoring striker for the Club this season I can't see what anyone would see in him.

His league record is pretty good, 8 goals in 18 games, none of which are penalties.

Admittedly he offers the least outside the box, but he's very good at getting in the right positions in the box.

Would like to see how he does in a team passing the ball about. He also looked much better alongside Anyinsah, and with BWP and Eccleston here now he should always have pace alongside him.

Add a quicker centre back and a playmaker and we might get even more out of him.

Agreed, Sodje is different to all our other strikers and has caused defences problems whenever he comes on, even at Spurs! He may not be the best goalscorer or finisher but we need to have another option available if things arent going to plan. Abbott should definitely be behind Akpo in the pecking order in my opinion...

Nice problem to have. I'd imagine with subs we'll use three or four of them in many matches, and then injuries and suspensions will take their toll too. Probably let either Sodje or Abbott go, at least on loan.
  • Benson 22 games 8 goals.

Anyinsah 17 games 5 goals (promising start but is he fading?)

Sodje scored in his only start this season.

Also, is Wagstaff going to play up front? If so, we've got SEVEN strikers!

Prefer Sodje to Abbott but how can we keep them all?
  • We've seen how Anyinsah can give defenders a really hard time. Now we could have that mixture of pace and strength up front for the full 90 minutes.

Two of Anyinsah, Eccleston and BWP starting then one being replaced by the other (or even Sodje on as well) could keep defenders under pressure for the whole game.

That pace should help create chances and hopefully get the midfield in control of the game a bit more.
  • I'd like to see a lineup like this:

    --------------------------Elliott------------------------

    Francis------Docherty-----------Dailly---------Fry

    -------------------------Semedo---------------------

    ------------------Racon--------Jackson----------------

    ------Wagstaff---------BWP-------Anyinsah--------

Wagstaff and Joe can drop back and help the midfield out when required. Alternatively it can convert to 442 easily with Waggy going right and JJ going left.
Ideally i'd like to see a new RB as i don't think francis is good enough, and we need a creative midfielder to replace Racon or at least push him for a place in the team.
The side is potentially a bit too attacking if we were away to Southampton for example but in home games and away against lesser sides i think we'd be quite strong.

isn't it great that we are debating which striker to use because we think they are good not because we think they are rubbish!! I have no idea who to start with out of these three but what a great dilemma to have.

    How about

    Elliot

    dailly

    Wagstaff Semedo Reid

Akpoe Abbott Ecclestone Benson BWP Anyinsah

Feel sorry for Benson who i think has gone from 1st choice to fourth, during his suspension, but we'll see.
  • Will BWP even be fit to play on saturday? Hasn't played for a while for Plymouth because of this injury, might need a week or 2 to get match fit again?
  • Possibly 5th if you include Waggy -It's up to him to move himself up the order which has to be the sort of competetion we need. Personally, I think we could find space for Waggy, Ecclestone, Anyinsah and BWP in the starting line up. Would expect to see lots of movement and pace up front which to be honest should make us pretty formidable at this level. Benson would have worth as a sub who can find some space in the box against beleagured and tired defenders.

    Mt team would be:

    Elliot
Francis Dailly Doc Fry (But would like a conventional left back -preferably pacey)

    Semedo
    Racon JJ

    Waggy Ecclestone
Anyinsah BWP (Lots of movement and interchanging of positions up front please)

Possibly too attacking - but I would be licking my lips.
  • Opps - I played 12 players - too many to choose from!!!! Didn't want to leave Waggy out but might have to.

i doubt that will happen, one of the first names on the team sheet these days
  • The sort of problem that's good to have - considering we have been recently forced to consider a combination of Martin, Abbot and Sodje -it is amazing how quickly that something that looked like a weakness can be turned into a strength.
  • AND Kyel Reid !
  • Interesting how quickly things change in football, i don't think i've seen one side listed here that includes Kyel Reid. Unthinkable a few months ago.
  • Now that is strange Chris - I wrote pretty much that exact same sentence but deleted it and just put that ^. Spooky
    !
  • Elliot

    Francis Dailly Doc Fry

    Waggy Semedo Jackson Ecclestone

    BWP Anyinsah
