Missing goals at games

At hillsborough i sat next to two African looking guys just as the match was about to begin. shortly after kick off, one gets up and goes. After the second goal went in of course i hugged the bloke next to me (he was on his own and had nobody to celebrate with), i'm sorry but hugging total strangers comes naturally after Charlton score two at the beginning of a game! After things settled down his mate returns with two friends and is clearly getting some stick for missing two goals. following a short chat it turns out that they are friends of Semedo and apparently regularly come to watch him play. Not sure if they joined in with the Semedo - 'millwall' chant?

  • Miss loads of goals these days as usually can't be arsed to get in before kick off. One fairly distinct memory is port vale at home c1996, 2-0 up at half time, strolling back to seats shortly after second half had kicked off, to hear the announcer say Port Vale's equaliser scored by...

Also Man City away 1984/5(?). The train was delayed, and we arrived after half time. I think we were 3-0 down already, and it finished 5.1 (Chris Jones i think for us, last minute). 50,000 CIty fans celebrated promotion that day. They should have been happy but times were different and there was a lot of coins and stones thrown into our section through the game, though that might have been a memory form the year before when we won 1-0 there.

Through the power of the internet i have just seen those goals i missed, exceot for our goal.. I was sure we scored a consolation..?!

    Day of the Bradford fire.
  • I've got a crazy record of missing goals! When the floodgates are open, there's always a goal!

Not been to any losses this season, due to work and playing for a team this year but i'll be there on Saturday so get your money on red (or draw) ;)
  • Bailey v Millwall last season was missed by a few I suspect. Was just as good celebrating with packed concourse, with beer flying around.
  • Back in the late 70's I used to go with my Dad and Grandad. We stood on the big old East terrace, Grandad and Dad had a few beers before the game, so Pop would always need a (several) leak, we always scored when he and his walking stick were making their way to the open bog behind the old covered end. If we were 1 down with 10 minutes to go, those around us would tell him to go for a slash!
He went to Charlton for over 60 years and he reckoned he only ever saw 5 goals!

  • I've missed a few the most recent being the first at Carlisle this season due to the late arrival of the coach.

The 5-1 defeat at Bolton (the game where Tom Hovi made his only Charlton appearance) was bad enough but I was down getting a pie when Garry Nelson scored our only goal in first half injury time.

In the first season back at the Valley my Dad and I were late arriving and running across the walkway over the old East Terrace to get to the Jimmy Seed Stand. While we were doing this John Aldridge was putting Tranmere ahead. Seconds later the ball arrived in the walkway about 10 yards in front of me but after a few ricochets it bounced out again denying my chance of whacking it back over the fence.
  • My worst experience with this was in the 90's (can't remember the season). At the Valley at home to Norwich. With not much of the game left (5, poss 10 mins?) we were 3-0 down. I left my seat in the east stand and was on the walkway behind it when there was a huge roar as we scored a consolation goal. I carried on walking and by the time i reached the exit, there it was again. I cursed the team for leaving it too late as this was surely injury time and carried on walking. By the time i'd got to the railway arch opposite the main entrance the next roar from the crowd seemed twice as loud as the other two put together. Against all odds, we had pulled back a 3-goal deficit. That was only the second time i'd ever left early, the first one being at selhurst against Newcastle when we were losing 1-0. Guess what happened that day too? :-(
  • The wife missed Man Utds two goals just before half time in the 3-3 draw when she went to get the half time pasties...
  • Missed the 9 second goal at West Ham.

Missed 2 Iwelumo goals right near half time against Burnley I think when in Champs.

Missed Abbott's goal against Swindon having left by then.

    Prob lots more.
  • 2 guys sitting in front of me who left at Charlton 2-3 Sunderland in the playoff final.
(maybe they went to different seats?)

I missed the 2 winning goals vs West Ham in 1998. (Hunt and Redfearn penalty).

  • Missed a goal at Boro in the cup replay as me stomach had turned and i had the brad pitts.
  • The first two goals of the 4-0 at Tranmere, went downstairs to get a couple of cups of tea and heard cheering, ran back up stairs to see the players celebrating, went back to get the collect the teas and heard cheering again. Needless to say saw the other two goals and won four nil so no complaints really!
  • A mate of mine got thrown out and locked up the play off final game , after 5 minutes ....

My daughters first game , Oldham at home this season , she missed our goal cos she had to go a wee
  • I honestly don't think I've ever missed one but at Selhust Park in 1990/91 season we were losing to Bristol City 1-0 and my dad went to get some drinks about a minute before half time. We scored twice before half time and won 2-1. Can't remember who scored or much about the game but remember it ruining my Dad's day...
  • Back in 93/94 season we had to leave a match early due the fact we had taken the old boy who lived next door.
We were playing Southend at home and had a decent 3-1 lead when we left. Subsequently we missed two Southend goals and a stoppage time winner for Charlton, really couldn't believe that was the same match we'd been to when we got home.
  • Charlton v newcastle a couple of years back. We were late back into our seats as per in the second half after having a second pint. We were losing one nil at half time but didnt realise when we went back to ours seats that Newcastle had scored another in the first few mins of the second half. Hadnt heard the Geordies cheering.

So i was getting odd looks when yelling come on charlton we can get a point here - in the final mins when losing two nil. We didnt find out till we were outside at the burger van saying one nil wasnt too bad a scoreline.

    Women at football..
  • I misssed a zheng zhi goal at home the other year, about 5 mins into the 2nd half - had to take the young 'un to the loo even though she'd been before the game & again at half time............have not taken her since !!

missed Brentford's first at their place this season - had taken almost 3 hrs to get there from s/e london and was 10 mins late.

I have never left before the end of a game EVER , so generally see all the late goals etc
  • Favourite 'missed goal moment' was on the Sweden/Finland pre-season tour a good few years back... At the match in Oulu my mate Jeff decided he wanted a hotdog and so wandered off to the bbq tent, missing a goal...thing is that hotdog was so good he went back for a 2nd a little bit later, just as we scored our 2nd... All the way to the artic circle and missed both the Charlton goals.. Was a cracking trip, as Clem_Snide will testify....
  • I missed Colin Walsh's(i think) equilizer against Norwich in the Full Members Cup semi-final at Selhurst after Robert Rosairio had put them in front in the dying seconds...but i did make it back into the ground to see the winner a Butterworth OG( i think..again)
  • I went to see a game at Bromley years ago. We arrived just as Bromley kicked off. We didn't appreciate for 40 minutes that they were already 1-0 down.

  • a reserve game at welling in the 90's we left bar late missed 2 goals went to bar early for half time missed another 2 goals - left bar late for half time missed another goal or 2

the game ended a silly score like 6-4 or 5 and i think we saw 2 goals
  • I missed every goal bar one of that friendly at Gillingham away.

The goal right on half time at Shef Wed in the cup in 06.

Plenty of opposition goals after walking out, e.g. Brighton this season, the 1-6 vs Leeds.

  • I missed the FA Cup final winning goal as i werent born.
  • Missed the consolation against Walsall in FA Cup 2002
Can't remember if I missed the Xabi Alonso penalty in 2006, certainly missed the challenge from Traore but no idea if I got in the ground for the goal.

Think that is it. Not bad as been going for 12 years.
