Yado Mambo recalled

Charlton Athletic recall defender
Jan 20 2011 By Tim Street

Yado Mambo

YADO Mambo's loan at Staines Town has been cut short after the appointment of Chris Powell at Charlton Athletic.

The new Addicks boss recalled the young centre-back as he wants to assess his squad at the Valley.

Swans manager Steve Cordery said: "To be fair to Yado, they’ve got a new man in who wants to look at him, and he wants to show what he can do.

"But it’s another chance for Richard Orlu, who has been superb for us."

  • Fair enough. Same as the Martin recall was fair enough.

Maybe the thinking is "we are looking for a young solid defender to build on"... "oh we have one already, lets see what he can do"... Maybe not play from the start yet but at least see him in training to give a fair assessment. Fair play to Powell

Also was nice to see that Solly has started training again.
  • Is Mambo that young? Seems to have been about a while.

Different thread maybe, but, when was the last time a Charlton player was capped at u.21?

For England- Scott Carson perhaps, sure he played for the u21s in 2007 including in the championships just after we went down when there was the penalty shoot out with Holland that was about 14-13 and Carson may have scored one.

Although Basey played for Wales u21 later, as I think did Randolph for Ireland (maybe also 2007?).

Oh and Mambo, maybe only 19, think this is his first year as a pro.
  • He's 19, so i would say young, but inexperienced at this level. But he has had good reviews when he has been out on loan. Thats not to say he ready for the step up, but you don't know until you try. We did with Solly and Jenkinson.

    Thanks.

19 is old enough isn't it? This season or non-league, surely.

    Shelvey, maybe played u.21. Uncle?
  • Defenders are like keepers. Experience counts for a lot, but the catch 22 is young CB's don't get experience unless they are tried at the right levels.

I remember watching Rufus in the reserves and thought he would make the step up and there was something unique in how he handled himself. Not seen Mambo play so can't really comment or compare.
  • Read he had a mare against Welling whilst his loans last season were mixed. However as Madz says, 19 is very young for a CB and maybe he needs to drop down a level or two before working his way back up the leagues. Mabo certainly has some good attributes but I expect another loan before the end of the season.

Mambo was impressive at RB in pre season, although not sure if this is an option while he continues to learn and develop.
  • He'll probably go on loan again, hard to see Powell playing him ahead of Dailly, Doherty, Llera and Fortune.

He played in the Blue Square South last season, went to Eastbourne in the Blue Square Prem this season. Ended up on the bench and came back here. Then the loan window closed so the Blue Square South was the highest level he could go on loan to. Obviously it'll be open again now but then of course it depends on finding the right club for him to play and train with who also need a centre back
  • Just wondering how bad he can be at 19 not to be getting a sniff when we're shipping so many goals and have a really slow back four.

  • He's not particularly quick himself.
  • There we go then! Difficult to see where he's going to fit in.
  • I see a few Brentford matches. They had a young defender called Carly Osbourne who used to make a few mistakes at right-back and eventually got dropped. He was loaned out non-league and some doubted they'd see him again. But he played again at the start of the season, impressed and was moved into the middle where he has excelled and the fans now love him. To ease hin in, Mambo at right back wouldn't be a bad shout , nor would Jenks. I'm not sure whether Solly has the height to make it and Francis hasn't the talent.
  • as I don't get to watch the reserves I've never seen Mambo play

but if he's not regarded as good enough to challenge the ageing Dailly and Doc, a clearly past-it Fortune and Llera for a place then he must be pretty poor, non??

or should he be given a chance?
  • i think this makes sense for pow to call him back, but we are really deep in the CB postions as is (dailly, doc, fortune, llera, fry)...
  • The thing is he's not appreciably faster than what we have in the eyes of most, but what Dailly, Doc and co DO have is the experience that means (in theory at least) they won't have to run around trying to get into position- they'll have read the threat. Of course thats kind of a CATCH-22 for Mambo, who needs experience but won't get it trying to break into an experienced defence...
  • Mambo is not slow but he is young

Seems Powell has identified the need for a younger CB so wants to see what he already has before parting with more money. Sensible approach and if anyone can help a defender improve it should be Powell

That said I think Jenkinson has an awful lot of potential and also the physical attributes to be a great defender
  • Mambo just got turned away from the players lounge because he didn't have a pass, despite the jobsworth stewards knowing exactly who he was. What a joke.

Presumably McCormack and Doherty were turned away for not being players

Semedo has played more than that. Some Portuguese sites claim he has played 13 times for their U21, scoring once. I can only find record of 11 matches though. All of these would have been before he signed for us:
