Penalties - Jackson, Reid and Curtis

edited January 2011 in General Charlton
Johnnie has racked up what is it six pens this season already?

Bob Curtis I think still has the record of 20 for Charlton but how many did Mark Reid score and what is the record of most pens (not counting shoot outs) in a season. Is it still Reid's 8 in the 85/86 promotion season?

Mendonca must be well up there too.

  • I'm not sure about Reid or Curtis, but Mendonca scored 14 penalties for the club (about 31% of his goal total). His highest tally was 7 in 97/98.
  • Mark Reid scored 14 pens for the club.
  • didn't we have a PL season with just one penalty?
  • so top pen takers so far

    1 curtis 20
    2 Reid 14
    2 Mendonca 14

    10? Jackson 6?

    Who else? Bent/Hales/Bailey
  • Jason Euell - 8
    Darren Bent - 6
  • Darren Pi***er - 7
    Alan Pa**ew - 6

Maybe 2004/2005- can not remember us having a single league penalty.

The season before we had Di Canio take a couple, and Euell. In 2005/2006 after there was Danny Murphy then Darren Bent who were on pens.
  • Back in Selhurst days didnt we go season and half without getting one?
Or only getting one and that was in the last game ?

Or am I just making this up?

That is the year we went a whole season without scoring a penalty.

The highest total I can see (last 20 years or so) was in 1995/96. We were awarded at least 10 and scored 9 of them. Robbo was the guilty party when trying to complete a 1st half hat-trick vs. West Brom (Mortimer scored one later on in that game)
  • Who took the pens before Curtis?

but did we get awarded any? I think we might have got one towards then end of the season. I also think that we conceded very few penalties that year as well, maybe 2 or 3.

I can't remember such a frequent run of penalties for us (and all scored) during my time as a Charlton fan... now I know what it must be like to be a Man U/Chelsea/Arsenal fan (delete as appropriate)
  • [cite]Posted By: Henry Irving[/cite]Who took the pens before Curtis?

I can remember Peacock taking the odd one. That may have been when Curtis wasn't playing though. Mike Bailey although (strange as it may seem!) I was young and might be making that up.
  • Harry Gregory. He missed a few crucial pens in the season we finished 3rd behind Derby and Palarse. Remember wondering at the time if we'd have gone up if he'd scored them.
  • Who took the penalties before Bob Curtis Henry asked, well you must remember Paul Went or Alan Cambell
  • Not mentioned here but I got it in my head that Morts took a mean penalty ?
  • [cite]Posted By: Henry Irving[/cite]Who took the pens before Curtis?
Richie Bowman took them for a while until he missed 2 in a row and Curtis took over, although he (Curtis) had taken a couple previously.
  • Mortimer did take a good pen I think he may have got two in the West Brom game mentioned above. He also got one in that 2-0 FA Cup win over Sheff Wed in Jan 1996. Missed a vital one against the post though when he slipped over against Leeds the year we got relegated first time round. Drew 1-1 and wouldve won 2-1. Rufus got sent off unjustly for a completely accidental stamp. Fucking idiot of a ref, as if Rufus would ever have done anything like that.
  • I'm pretty sure that during our time in the top flight in the 80's we didn't get a single penalty at an away ground - hard to believe that not a single foul was committed on a Charlton player in the oppo penalty area at their ground over a four year period....such a comfort to know that refs have always been crap....

Since 1967 i have been going to Charlton and looking at the penalty takers since then a number of names people have forgoten.....list as follows.
    Bob Curtis 20
Derek Hales 15 WHO COULD FORGET KILLER..we all did.
    Mark Reid 15 1985-1986 8 pens scored.
    Clive Mendonca 13
Darren Pitcher 7 became the 1st taker of a penalty on returning to The Valley Leeds fa cup.
    Paul Went 6
    Alan Pardew 6
    Keith Peacock 5
    Paul Mortimer 5
    Richie Bowman 4
    Mike Flanagan 3
    Ronnie Moore 3
    Tommy Canton 3
    Graham Stuart 3

I think Dennis Edwards took some - I certainly remember him missing one. I also recall the crowd groaning as he was given the ball before he missed it. The fans didn't used to inject confidence into the players then either.

    Mike Kenning took some too.

I seem to recall Keith Peacock scoring one once when he hit the ball so badly that you had time to count to ten before it bobbled into the corner
