Rob Lee & Graham Stuart

edited January 2011 in General Charlton
Recently went to a legends dinner. Two of those present were Rob Lee and Graham Stuart, managed to have a chat with both of them along with Stuart McCool about what they do now - all three were in agreement that they wanted to be back involved with the game. We have since seen Stuart McCool head to Motherwell.

There would be very few people I would like to see sitting alongside CP in the dugout more than Rob Lee. He does some punditry work but would at least be worth an approach IMO? (Graham Stuart not really a viable choice)

Also, sorry to reignite a discussion, but Jeremy Aliadiere is still without a club - now for a player who trained at Clairefontaine and played at Premier League level surely with Mr. Jimenez doing the talking we should be looking to bring someone of that potential quality in?

  • Rob Lee's memories of playing seem to me to begin and end with Newcastle !, would rather have Graham Stuart
  • I heard a while ago Rob Lee was waiting for Alan Shearer to go into Management and he would be hes assistant manager. Obviously that has not happened due to the fact Mr Shearer continuing hes TV career.

Personally, I would love to see Robert Lee in the Charlton set up somewhere, as he is my favorite Charlton player of all time.
  • I am all for having Robert Lee back.............we could do with a few more turnstiles being opened.
  • I want a good coach, not necessarily just someone who's been to the Valley before. If we can get a good coach who is also an old fans favourite then great, but what makes you think either of tehse two would be good AMs to SCP given that no-one else sees fit to employ them in a similar role?

If you want ex Addicks, we'd be better looking at people like Peter Shirtliff or Lennie Lawrence. Maybe even someone like Mervyn Day
  • he was on our table at one of these legends events with alvin martin as the host at balls brothers. we just grilled him all about charlton but his answers are all a bit hazy really though i do remember him being quite honest and had opinions on everyone and he still had affection for charlton.
  • I used to work with a chap who was a very good mate of Rob Lee.

I'll think you'll find his affection for Charlton isnt as great as some may think.

He was offered two deals to return to Charlton in the glory years and turned them down - admittedly he chose West Ham over us who he supports.

Didnt get the feeling he really gave a toss about any team other than West Ham and Newcastle.
  • No thanks - Great player, but has shown no affection for us since he left.
  • Jeremy Aliadiere - would of been on big money towards the end of his Arsenal days, even bigger at Boro, wouldn't drop down to £2k a week or whatever the top end of our new wage structure would support.
  • Graham Stuart would be better than Rob Lee but as neither have really worked in football since retiring I would want neither alongside a rooky manager.
  • I agree with those who think CP's #2 should have a hard edge (e.g. Deano) and I don't think Rob Lee comes into that category. He's also always struck me as not being the sharpest tool in the box even by footballer standards.

Loved him as a player though.

  • i lump lee in with Paul Walsh who show no affection to the club who gave them their break....
  • Whether or not Rob Lee has any remaining affection for Charlton is only if minor importance. What would he add? He has less management experience than Chris Powell. We need a wise head to give advice. Lennie Lawrence fits the bill well.

I agree and his reinvention from Robert to Rob after he left us has always been a source of amusement!

Just because Rob lee started with us, that doesn't give this club a special place in his heart. He has pointed this much out many times in the past. I met him about 10 yrs ago whilst working at Bloomberg, when he came in to do an interview and when i mentioned the words "Charlton Athletic" to him, he had a look on his face as though i'd mentioned an ex-girlfriend he'd rather forget. First club doesn't always mean unconditional love, if so CP may have gone for the palarse job instead of us. Simply, he seems to have no love for the clubh as the same can be said of barcode Lee. So for that reason I'm out.
  • Seemed happy enough to be there at the Dagenham (?) game earlier in the season to commemorate the 25 year anniversary of leaving the Valley. And I'm sure it said in the programme that day that he was still a regular visitor to Charlton. He's still a hero of mine .
  • Robert Lee (it will always be Robert, although no one he knows has actually ever called him Robert) is actually a mate of mine, and he does hold the club in great affection. His Dad is an Addick, born in Woolwich. Although it is more likely as someone said he would end up working with Shearer, I don't think he has any intentions of getting into management, although he was recently toying with the idea of doing his coaching badges.

By the way he knows his autobiography was probably the dullest book ever written.
  • loved them both, met them both... Rob Lee booked me and gave me 8/10 for my diving headers down at one of the sparrows lane summer campo thingys when I was a kid... and Ive met graham stuart once in the Goose in Beckenham and once at charlton station..

really liek them both, graham stuart was always underrated I thought... very good player...

and good old Robs stop on the edge of the box, trun and then fire in to the far corner... he seemed to score ALL his gols the same way..I always wondered why keepers didnt get wise... very good player in deed...

BUT I dont think either is right for this club right now... Not with Powelly as fresh as he is...

    Maybe for the future..

I read his book too, it really was a bit poor, and even the title calling number whatever it was covered about 15 pages in the middle of the book... really forced a biography out..

But I was very proud when he scored on his debut for England...

He had a real eye for goal..
  • Rob Lee boozing in The Wine Lodge, Fenchurch St tonight with his West Ham chums.

Nice chap, posed for a few piccies with the ladies
