NB. Am not REALLY from Basildon... was just born there
  • Lived next door to Alan Knott in 1970's. I ran out of petrol one evening outside the Bull at Swanley and phoned my wife to get my dad to rescue me. My dad wasn't in so my wife went next door and asked Alan Knott. Was I surprised and embarrassed when Alan Knott turned up in his car with a can, he'd just got back from work after hitting 67 against India at the Oval. Genuine nice guy or what.

  • Blimey, there are some great ones on here!

    My meagre claims are.....

1] Had tea and biscuits with the great Dennis Compton at the TCCB (now ECB) offices at Lords in 1993.

2] Spoke to Colin Cowdrey on the phone while fact-checking an article he had written.

3] Had a beer with Darren Lehman, former Australian batsman, and watched England - Argentina in WC 2002 with him. He wanted us to win.

4] Been chatting with Micky Stewart in the TCCB offices whilst watching Mike Gatting drop an absolute dolly at short-leg off the luckless Ian Salisbury in a Test Match in India in 1993 on Sky TV. His comments about Gatting were not repeatable in polite company.

5] Met Jimmy Nail in a lift at work and being too gobsmacked to talk to him. The bloke is massive and has the most booming voice you can imagine.
  • I once was a Judge for Miss Scottish Daily Express, attended The Miss World Ball in the Great Room in Park Lane, went to the Royal Film Opening of The 49 Steps, worked with Princess Galitzine a descendant of Rasputin, and surely my crowning achievement.....got two Gold Medals playing football at Butlins !

Delivered a car to my boyhood hero John Surtees and could only mumble something about the weather when I actually had so much I wanted to ask!

My dad was given a lift to Hamstead tube station by Ralph Richardson on his Norton Dominator motorcycle. Something I remind the family about every time 'Time Bandits' is on the telly. They throw things!
