Charlton player signed from Spurs - 80s

  • That game against Chelsea was one of the most amazing I have ever been to in 40 years of watching Charlton - an absolute war both on and off the pitch. Players were just kicking each other and Paul Miller laid out a Chelsea forward with a right hander in injury time just as the bloke was lining up a shot that I'm sure would have gone in. Ref had had enough by then and just totally bottled out of giving a cast iron penalty. Remember being locked in for an eternity and getting out at 5.45pm only to find hundreds of Chelsea supporters hanging around looking to "congratulate" us warmly on plunging them into the play-offs.

An amazing afternoon - and you can see the highlights here http://vimeo.com/groups/charltonlife/videos/5271029

If you've never seen it, worth a watch.

Wicks? Cheers. Remember him. Leaburn was apoplectic...had to be held back by a few of ours.

Most certainly was Wicks, elbow maybe; Leaburn wanted to do him serious harm when he eventually came round and Morts was sent on to calm him down. Think that was the game when a little kamikaze mob of theirs persuaded the stewards that they were Charlton so they walked them round the pitch and let them in to our away end section when.........yep you guessed it, it kicked off. Big mistake because they had nowhere to go but then again they knew that!
  • I was in the Chelsea end for that game. It was a very ugly atmosphere with the Chelsea lot I stood next to doing sieg heil chants and gestures. Very racist. Leaburn was a skinny rake in those days and Wicks poleaxed him. We played great in a determined well organised manner and ground out a draw that saved us. Shirtcliff and Miller were outstanding. But the game was so ugly that it left a bad feeling in your mouth.

Thanks, now that brought back a lot of memories, now that was a bad ref.

Wicks laid Leaburn out from behind, one of the most cowardly acts I have seen on a field.

Everyone saw how brave Wicks was after the game when he cowered in the Chelsea dressing room and would not come out and face Leaburn who was more than up for a get square.

Funnily enough, I have watched the video of that game and it was probably one of the better games that our Welsh import Andy 'Lager Legs' Jones had for us, he came on as sub and really put himself about in the second half.

Dennis Bond, Luke Young and Andy Reid. Also Paul Konchesky was on loan at Spurs. There was a loanee too Paul (?) Houghton.

I remember being shocked by Lennies decision as well as the speed of it.
  • Battle of the bridge ,Fantastic day me and 3 others from eltham. On the piss very early nicked after the game , put in cell with chelsea fans ,pleaded guilty 2 weeks later west london magistrates =400 quid fine & years ban.. Still a great day ....
  • The Battle of the Bridge --i just dont get the "sqeaky bum time" thing. It was one of the best(if not the best) away mobs/support we had ever had. They werent outside, i dont remember us being kept in, they werent at Earls Court, and they didnt turn up at Charing Cross.
Earls Courts was always a point were they waited for away fans, we usedto drink with a good few oftheir faces at Charing Cross so they knew where we would be.

  • my referral to 'squeeky bum time' is in reference to will we go in to play offs for relegation or stay up , proper nervous fixture about footballing matters

One of the best days ever, even our west ham pal v**** tells a story of the ICF ripping the p*** out of them for us taking liberties that day.

PS...GH, what was the name of that pub just off villiers st we used to meet in?
  • St Martin`s Tavern.

  • Steve thompson would be willing to die for Charlton & Paul Miller kill they certainly were tough, On the subject of Don. Mcallister I once see him outside the Valley give two young boys free grandstand tickets a nice bloke was Don
  • I remember that game well....never felt so threatened and intimidated by fans as that day.....thier fans were just as bad if not worse than they are now.......

Your having a laugh surely, they were battered before during & after the game, not that I'm condoning that sort of behaviour merely stating a fact

  • St Martins Tavern, what great memories, our London boozer, every London away game started off with getting rat arsed in there. The Dundee boys all used to drink in there as well when they were down.

What a game! Cheers for the link.
  • Didn't Mcallister break Mark Penfold's leg in the 4-1 at the Valley?
  • Garth crooks was another 80s ex-spurs player, of course
  • Great to see so many comments on the Chelsea V Charlton game in '88. Remember big Carl saying to Wicks (I'm sure after the game) never ever come south of the river! We were sat in the old West stand. Came out of the ground with some mates, made out we hadn't been to the game and kept deliberately asking Chelsea supporters what the score was for a wind up!
  • Moooooosehead
  • St martins tavern ,yer thats the one. proper eltham boys, finnegan ,hoppo.fordy...great days.....
  • The Goonershit at the Library in the League cup could hardley get in the bozzer let alone get to the bar.

Mario a Greek guy used to run it was always good to us.Mind you we spent a few quid in there
  • Wow I really never knew this. I remember Miller being there, then I remember him not being there! Was at that game too!

Steve Thompson nearly did die for the club - he did a diving header that took him over the advertising hoardings. He disappeared from view. Newspaper headline the next day read "I Could Have Been Killled!" because he narrowly missed an inexcplicable spike poking up behind the hoardings.

Remember that incident well at Sellout what game was it though?

    Might have been Arsenal?

It was around the autumn time. I'm not say I know who failed to drive that peg in properly just in-case Steve Thompson's lawyers are monitoring the thread...
