Sheffield Wednesday vs. Charlton - Preview, Poll, Team, News and Views

It’s been difficult to concentrate on the beautiful game as a Charlton fan in the past couple of weeks. Even the glamour of an FA Cup tie against Tottenham was simply a welcome distraction whilst rumours of new managers floated in the air. Eddie Howe was meant to be at the ground on Sunday and was odds on favourite, Gary Johnson was then sacked by promotion rivals Peterborough was made odds on favourite and then from left field last night Charlton legend Chris Powell appeared from nowhere as the new favourite.

There is however a season to complete and a massive game against Sheffield Wednesday to tackle, I’m going to presume Keith Peacock and Damian Matthew will still pretty much be in charge on Saturday regardless of whether we make a managerial appointment between now and 3pm on Saturday.

The team against Tottenham showed that they could play football and not resort to hoof ball (although this may be as a result of the opposition rather than a miraculous turnaround in approach), and if we can take that into the game at Hillsborough then we stand a good chance of getting a very much needed 3 points for the first time since November.

To be honest I can see us keeping the 4-5-1/4-3-3 formation with the same team that lined up against Spurs. With Paul Benson still suspended, Lee Martin could come back (?) from being cup-tied with a place on the bench as well as new loanee signing Nathan Ecclestone likely to get a run out one way or another. Pawel Abbot is rumoured to be off on loan so could free up a space on what could be an extremely attacking subs bench (Sodje, Reid, Ecclestone, Martin).

In the reverse fixture we put in an excellent team performance and come out as victors, if we do the same again then we could see the kick-start to our season that it so badly needs. We saw some good signs at White Hart Lane, let’s hope it wasn’t a one off. 1-0 Charlton.

Come on you reds.

Sorry, seems to be an error with the polling function at the moment...

  • nice preview wss

going for the same side at spurs with ecclestone getting the last 20/25 mins.

2-1 charlton win - big joe and the debut boy grabbing a late winner
  • I'm going for 25% of Gary's bunch to get kicked out.
  • good write up - but amidst all that has been going on, I see nothing more than a resounding defeat on saturday, 3-0 I reckon.
  • tough game. providing we don't give away a sloppy goal through a defensive lapse, and they decide not to score a screamer, we will win 1-0!! They're a well drilled side, but from what i've read they're in a similar way to we were last year, and i'm confident we can wiin this one. About time we had a headed goal from a defender, so i'll go for Doherty to score the only goal of the game.
  • Don't quite share your optimism lads. Wednesday have 5 straight home wins, scoring 16 goals in the process and just won 3-0 at Bristol City in the cup. Home win for me.
  • 1-2 win for Charlton, 3 points in the bag :-)
  • The performance is much more important than the result to me- I really can't see us winning but I do want to see if last week was a flash-in-the-pan, rising to the occassion performance or whether there really is the makings of a slick, passing team with confidence and panache still retrievable.

    2-0 to Wednesday though.
  • Home win for me too
  • can't see beyond a Wednesday win.
  • At the moment it seems like a home win is the most likely outcome, in fact anything other than that I would regard as a good omen.

Sorry, seems to be an error with the polling function at the moment...

    Try viagra
  • 2-1 Wednesday. See us scoring but not having quite enough to keep them at bay.

Will be backing us to win regardless.
  • i think the players will have found some confidence from how they performed at spurs and this will be carried on to sheffield. would expect bit of a defensive style where we are really going therelooking for a draw and hoping to nick a win.

    1-1 respectable draw
  • Got a feeling we might see another P'boro type performance/result on Saturday.

You heard it hear first :-)
  • Never mind the team, who's going to be manager?
  • GIven Wednesday are on a bit of a run then a 1-1 would be a good result.

Would love to see KP/Matthews go with the line-up that we had once Reid had replaced McCormack on Sunday with Jackson slotting in-field as the third centre-midfielder and Reid and Wagstaff pushing right on to link-up with Ayinsah
  • Lose 2-1

Bring in Chrissy Powell and the good feeling will spread through the team and fans leading to a 2-1 Charlton win :-)
  • Agree with stonemuse. If SCP is in the stands watching and all primed to take training on Monday morning, they're going to play their little cotton socks off for him. Doubt that will be quite enough to cut out all of the woeful pieces of non-defending. But a Charlton win, 3-2.

The other factor is that they CANNOT let KP retire with a 100 per cent record of defeats, so they're going to be doing it for him, too...
  • Win for us. OS says, Peacock will be in charge.
  • 5-0 loss ........ Chris powell brings in a new keeper first thing monday

And results improve just as they did when randy took over at the end of last season
  • Damian and Kieth will over see a complete footballing performance pass and move, endeavour and speed

the outcome of which will be a vital 1-2 win with the Boys ecclstone and Anyinsah scoring to give us a 2 goal lead on the 19th and 34th minutes

dirty scummy palarse reject morrision will score a concelation goal for them on 82
  • I'm going on Sat, but even in my heart I can't see how we will win this. Basically because we cannot seem to score (except for Johnnie J). If Johnnie is on fire, Wednesday have a poor defensive record.

It's gonna be all hands to the pumps. Even if Sir Chrissy isn't in charge I hope he is allowed to fire up the lads.

    I'm going for a draw.
  • Fear we'll lose 2-0 but praying not, as i'm going. Chrissy Powell's Red and White army will be sang loud and proud whatever the score! Come on Chris sign the feckin papers.

Goal difference says convincing win for SW. New manager and performance against Spurs plus Anyinsah and Ecclestone says we might nick it.

Anyinsah and Eccleston are going to be banging in goals like nobody's business for this.
  • Wednesday fans are confident.

We might nick a draw, but I'll go for home win
  • I'm always much more optimistic when Anyinsah plays - that and Ecclestone who has genuine pace as well will mean that the Wednesday defenders won't have it easy. When one of them tires, bring Sodje on against his old club. I can see us winning this if the defence turns up.
  • Skysports.com understands Liverpool are prepared to loan out highly-rated striker Nathan Eccleston during this month's transfer window.

Eccleston is regarded as one of the most promising players at Anfield and has made seven appearances in the first-team this season.

The 20-year-old, who enjoyed a loan spell at Huddersfield last season, will be allowed to go out on loan again in order to increase his first-team experience and get some action under his belt.

Reds boss Roy Hodgson is happy to loan out Eccleston in January in order to further his education as he is regarded as one for the future at Anfield.

The news has alerted a number of clubs in the Premier League and Championship to Ecclestone's possible availability this month.

West Brom and Wigan are both thought to be interested in the jet-heeled forward along with Championship pair Queens Park Rangers and Burnley.
Liverpool will now decide what is the best option for Ecclestone so that he can get some valuable first-team action in the second half of the season.

I Like the words - 'jet heeled'- exactly what we need IMO. I'll go for 3-1 to us - Anyinsah, Ecclestone and Sodje.
