Refereeing

Anyone who thinks that we do not get the benefit of being the 'big club' in this league, in terms of refereeing decisions should take note of yesterday's trip down memory lane.
Every time a spurs player hit the floor yesterday, they were awarded a free kick. I believe we had one all day and that was for a yellow card incident.
Even the linesman paused before awarding a throw-in our way.
Also when the referee was pacing out ten yards he just paced them and then barked at out to the players where to stand. And yet every time he spoke to the spurs players he was al smiles and good wishes.
Reminded me of the days back in the premier league when we faced this kind of bias every week.
I can no believe that league one refs are better than premier league ones (in fact they show themselves regularly to be poor decision makers) so this leads me to assume that bias is still there, we are just on the other side of it.

We already had someone in the Spurs post match thread saying how well the ref did and it's obvious PL refs are going to be better than L1 refs. Michael Oliver had a really good game yesterday and effortlessly controlled the game. To say he, or any ref for that matter, is biased is nonsense. Useless maybe but biased, no.
  • Thought Spurs got some easy free kick's but the referee was better than average on the whole.
  • After seeing the standard of League 1 officiating this season, from memory- Daggers, Tranmere and Yeovil were prime example of a very poor standard, yesterday I thought the ref did well. Prrhaps a tad keen to award free kicks to Spurs around the box but was fairly consistent and good use of the advantage at times.

it winds me up no end when people say this as well spankie. we do make wrong decisions but being biased is utter bull.

on one hand your praising in then at the end your insinuating he was biased towards Spurs.

Not at all, just that if there was one criticism of the ref it would be that he seemed keen to award free kicks to them around the box. Not saying he was biased, as he may well have done the same to us if we had similar situations.
  • Referees tend to favour the "big" club. I'm not saying it's a deliberate thing but the 50:50s go that way more often than not, certainly since football has had a higher tv profile, in my opinion after nearly 50 years watching the game.
  • There was no bigger bias than I would expect to be given to any 'home' team. Freekicks and decisions are always more likely to be given to the home team than the away one. That's football, frankly.
  • He played some superb advantages yesterday for both teams which as a referee I really appreciated. Trust me when I say it's one of the hardest things to master. I would say there are many preconceptions about referees. Among those being (in my experience of watching football for 25 years and refereeing for 8):
If you give two free kicks in a row to the same team an opponent will ask if you're going to give them anything (or say you've given us nothing all game). If you give a penalty to one team the opponents almost expect you to give one to them to even up the supposed travesty of justice. Same thing with red cards. And of course that refs favour big clubs. If you look at league 1 for an example Charlton are one of the bigger clubs in the division and we've not got the rub of the green this season!!! Thanks to all for the intelligent and mature comments, it's nice to have a convo about this subject and not be ripped to shreds...!

That's a bizarre comment to end of given that you ripped my original post to shreds!
I don't think the referee was showing deliberate bias more accidental bias.
He sees the Tottenham plays a lot and knows who is likely to dive and who is not. Remember the odd naughty challenge Chrissy P made? He would never give away a free kick though as referees would know 'that's Chrissy P, he's not a dirty player, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt'.

The ref on Saturday knew very little about our players and therefore didn't chat with them and didn't give any of them the benefit of the doubt.

Do you really believe that on Sunday we just happened to make more bad challenges just outside the box than we have in the rest of the season put together?

I apologise if my original comments were a bit strong. I have just edited them. I just get extremely frustrated with the general dim view of refereeing, not just by CAFC fans but the footall community as a whole.
I think we jumped in a bit on the edge of the box, just because there seemed to be a lot of free kicks on the edge of the box doesn't mean there's anything in it. It's just coincidence. Maybe we as two banks of four knew we were in trouble and let's face it Spurs had a lot more pace than us.
It is a good point you raise as the referee was a PL ref so probably knew the Spurs players a bit better. It has been raised before when a football league team plays a PL side as the ref has to be of PL standard and obviously deals with those teams all the time.
  • I fully expected to get nothing going our way near either penalty area but everything around the halfway line to show 'no bias'. 'Twas ever thus in the prem.
In Div.3 I think the opposite applies. The 'big boys' should be able to sort themselves out so let's help the tiddlers.
    There again, I AM biased!

As with any position of authority the people within it do their best, and the people outside it will slag it off. Just ask a policeman if they deliberately arrest people just to annoy them or if a parking warden gives out tickets when he didn't really need to. But we all believe we are hard done by. I work in journalism and have given up trying to explain that we are not lazy - under paid and over worked, but generally not lazy. But the second an incorrect story gets out there everyone calls it lazy journalism.

It’s the way of the world.

As for ref thing, maybe one good idea would be for players and mamagers to be welcoming and introduce themselves to refs they don't know and try and get on their good sides from the off?
