This isn't the first time this pleb has made a fool of himself. I remember when he said to the press that he thought the other England U21 players might be a bit star-struck by him after he signed for Chelsea because nobody spoke to him, and when this was put to one of the other U21 players they corrected Johnson and said we don't talk to him cause he's a bit of a tit (or words to that effect). Extraordinary that a professional at that level can do such stupid things. He can't defend himself, hell he can't even defend.

Comments

  • How is that an 'astonishing attack'? Merson is an absolute, utter clown and nothing Johnson has said is inaccurate. Don't get me wrong - Johnson is shit - but if Merson takes the piss out of him on TV, I don't see anything wrong with him giving him some back.

Overpaid kids, have no sense of reality. Agreed Merson is a bit of a muppet but a professional England international should not be reacting like that.
  • I agree with Leroy, Merson had a dig at Johnson and Johnson had one back, that can't be too much of a surprise. Neither of them acted professionally and Johnson must have known when writing it that he'd get picked up on it, but it's nothing more than two idiots squabbling.
  • Merson was a top class player who won the league twice and major European trophies. Glen Johnson is barely a footballer's arsehole. Johnson's could have hit back without being personal.
  • I also agree with Leroy. Some of these pundits go over the top when talking about players. If he is going to state that one of England's defenders 'can't defend for toffee' on national TV in a lame attempt to be humourous he should not complain if he is the subject of an equally public and personal pop in response. Merson is entitled to make those comments (maybe he is even paid to make comments like that) but he, or his supporters, cannot complain about comments made in response.

100% agree. No love for Merson in particular but he was much a better player than Johnson can ever dream of and is perfectly entitled to his opinion of what's going on at Liverpool, especially as that's his job now. To suggest he was 'average' is just a childish response that in these days of media training, etc, etc, I'm suprised by.
  • Merson is paid to give an opinion and to act the fool in that amusing schoolboys club, Gillette Soccer Saturday.
Doubt if he'll lose too much sleep over Johnson's reaction. Touched a nerve I reckon
  • I don't think Merson has said anything wrong, Johnson is one of the worst players I have seen in my lifetime in an England shirt & nobody would go anywhere near him at £18m. Johnson has then launched into a personal attack and made a complete fool of himself.

Merson is a football pundit. Admittedly i think he's a sh*t pundit but he's on the programme to provide analysis and give his opinion. All he's said is that Johnson can't defend for toffee and isn't worth £18m. Both comments are correct.
Johnson has then retaliated with a personal attack which was low but he also called Merson "an average player at best". He obviously never saw Merson play then.
Johnson is a useless c*nt who clearly has a vastly over-rated opinion of himself, a typical modern day footballer cocooned in his own little world who thinks he's a great player because he earns 100k a week.

Perhaps Merson could retaliate with a personal attack about Johnson taking out a court injunction so news of his affairs never made the papers. If only.

And johnson's comments on him being a drug taking alcoholic are correct too. Yes he was a decent player but also a prick for ruining his career.

I think you are mistaking Johnson for somebody who has an iota of intelligence!!
  • How is Johnson describing Merson as an 'alcoholic drug abuser' relevant unless he is implying that he is still on one long bender.
Johnson needs to take a look at himself - is is not paying well and not worth anything near 18M.

Sorry...tried a couple of times to quote properly, and have given up.

    Uncle

Irrelevant at best, appalling at worst. Pundits giving opinions on players' ability is their job. Playing football is Johnson's. He should stick to it. You'd think he'd have other worries than the historical addictions of others right now.

To be fair, my thoughts and prayers are elsewhere (in Tucson, Arizona - thankfully the in-laws weren't grocery shopping this morning) right now, but the antipathy that people can demonstrate for one another is really shocking me this afternoon.
  • To coin a cliche/phrase etc etc.............. Johnson, the truth hurts fella!!
  • Toilet Seat
  • Glen Johnson is the wrong sort of footballer that the Premiership develops. At a young age before he's made it he's earning stupid money, and consequently not progressing as a footballer. When he first arrived and was loaned out to portsmouth to get experience he looked a star in the making and then belatedly started improving afer Chelsea sold him. At Liverpool he was good for a few matches, but then lapsed into being an average player.

If Hodgson deserves stick for signing Konchesky what does Benitez deserve for spunking £18m - virtually the entire season's transfer budget on him?

It demonstrates what a screwed up club Liverpool have become that they haven't got anywhere near value for money out of him.

They may be true, but that does not mean he is entitled to use them in a football-related debate.

If Merson had started banging on about Johnson's morality in being a petty thief then he would have been in his rights to bring up Merson's past activities.

Regardless, its a bit strong to say that Merson "ruined" his career. He played for over 15 seasons in the Premiership and won the League twice, the FA Cup and the ECWC!!!! And played for England.

I bet Jonjo would settle for that lot!
  • I would like to think that Jonjo wont end he's career on coke and stella, why does every comment i make have to end up being about what jonjo would like or some other comparison to him. This is about Johnson and Merson and should really remain that way. You say he didn't ruin his career i say he did, thats what this place is for. I believe if you have to go into rehab during your career you are somewhat ruining it but thats just my thoughts.

Merson did not "end his career on coke and stella" though, did he? He had problems with drink and drugs at Arsenal when he was in his early days but then got clean at Boro and Villa and played in the top league till he was 35, although he apprently had a relapse when he went to Walsall. Can't blame him too much for that, though, a move to Walsall would drive anyone to drink.

Maybe he could have achieved more, maybe not, we will never know.

No need for you to be so touchy about your nephew either, it was only a light-hearted, well intentioned comment and no malice was meant whatsoever.
