Best Save you have ever seen Live

edited January 2011 in General Charlton
Following on from the recent thread trend of best..., got me thinking about saves.

My choice would be Deano in 1999 against Walsall at The Valley. This was one of the only games I sat in the Jimmy Seed for and was right behind the save- it is on the season review video but from memory he was diving to the left and had to re adjust after a deflection and stuck his hand up, just managing to get it round the post. Brilliant save.

  • Petterson against Palace toward the end of the 90s. Palace lumped it into the box and one of their forwards bulleted a header goalwards. Skippy dived across to his right and somehow kept the ball out and put it over the bar - I maintain that it's still the best save I've ever seen - live or on telly.
  • Deano away at Birmingham on a monday night (2003?) Made two world class point blank saves.
  • All-time best save of all-time.

If you've never seen Higuita's 'Scorpion kick', check this out:

Gordon Banks in Disguise .... Superb save!!

Plus + Kiely's at Birmingham from Dugarry i think

This. One of those was from a Christophe Dugarry header. Sadly I can no longer find it on youtube.
  • There were two in particular against Brum- one was Dugarry from point blank range when it hit Deano in the face- a phenominal save but I thought the next one from Forssell was better as Deano was moving to the left and had to re adjust ans go back the other way to tip the ball round the post.
  • Up at Anfield in the 80s. Steve Mackenzie took a free kick from outside the box which rifled towards the top corner. Grobbelaar sprung from the other end of the goal line to push it round the post. We were standing more or less directly behind and to this day I still don't know how he managed to do it. He must of had money on keeping a clean sheet. Smiley Winky.
  • Bob bolder - most of them versus Man U in 1988 i think? Game finished nil nil. Best goalkeeping display ive ever seen.
  • Sasa Ilic - away at Birmingham the year we won the play-offs in his great clean sheet run
  • Also at Old Trafford, Nicky Johns from a Bryan Robson header; twisted in mid-air to turn it round, with Robson alreday celebrating. To Robson's credit, after cursing the heavens, he acknowledged Johns. (We won 1-0).

That Petterson one and Deano's at Brum were very very special too (wasn't there for the latter). I'd suggest that Seaman's achievenent in clawing back an effort that had already gone past him v Sheff. Utd. was perhaps the most difficult I've ever seen, albeit on TV. Whilst remaining magnificent and deserving it's place in the hall of fame, Banks's has perhaps been equalled as keepers have trained harder and become more agile. All truly breath-taking anyway.

  • Deano was a great keeper.
Possibly last season Robbie Elliot against southampton. Straight from kick off foiled two of them through on goal. Brilliant save
  • For the old uns. We once played a 0-0 draw with Wrexham, probably early seventies, and John Dunn saved what seemed to the entire crowd an absolute certain goal (wish I could remember well enough to describe in detail), my point is it was so astonishing that I swear the crowd clapped for a good five minutes even during subsequent passages of play. Is this something I dreamed or does anybody else remember?
  • Nicky Johns made some good ones back in the day
  • I think Randolphs save to Beckfords header after going 1-0 up at home against Leeds last season has to be up there!

was that at the Covered End? If so it must be the one I remember as outstanding, didn't know it was against them though, even better
  • Yep, definitely into Covered End, diving towards what's now the NW quadrant.

I'm with this one too. Astonishing save - just like Banks as mentioned. It was on the end of season video but the moment was ruined by the bland voice over that did little more than note it was 'well-saved'. Those videos were rubbish.
  • Stefan Anderson did a worldy against Chelsea once

For me though it's my idol - Neville - against Andy Jones. People said it was a bad miss but it was miraculous goalkeeping too
  • Jeff Wood v Orient circa 1977. It was our final game of the season. As usual being a Charlton fan wasn't easy. We'd had a decent first half of the season. The club did a deal with New England Tea Men and Flash, Paddy and Leroy Ambrose left for America with about 10 games left. We nosed dived and were left requiring a draw at fellow strugglers Orient to avoid relegation.

Its the only game I have ever been to three times. The first was abandoned at half time. The second was postponed late in the day. Finally it went ahead later in the week. The tension was at play off final levels. The game was largely forgettable but as we went into injury time at 0-0, Orient were pressing for a winner. It looked all over that they had snatched a winner but somehow Jeff Wood pulled off a miraculous save and then the Ref blew the final whistle. My friends and I all to a man felt it was the best save we had ever witnessed - comparing it to Banks' famous save from Pele.

I wonder if anyone else remembers it?

" Bestgoalkeeping performance I've ever seen " (or words to that effect) - Alex Ferguson

For a single save my vote goes to Sasa ilic away at Ipswich in the play offs. An absolute belter looking like it was destined for the top corner, Sasa went full length to his left and plucked it out of the air. Most keepers would have been glad to get a hand to it and put it around the post.

Geraint Jones keeping to Steve Harmison when his radar wasn't working...

But seriously, Ilic on several ocassions. Don't ask me to name them. But on each ocassion after a save of utter genius, he then went and let in a couple of gifts ...
  • Bob at Old trafford, any one of the dozens he made that day. Look of disbelief on Robson's face. Utd players congratulating Bob on way off the pitch.
  • Sasa penalty save at wembley.
  • I wasnt at the game I must admit, but do you remember when Steve Grit had to get between the sticks and that save he pulled off.
