The noisiest match?

edited January 2011 in General Charlton
The various current discussions got me thinking about the last match of the season 1985. We were away to Man City and they were heading for promotion and the atmosphere before and during the match was electric. We stood as usual on the huge bank of terracing down the touchline opposite the main stand.

The noise that the Mancs generated in that stand actually created a sound pressure that you felt coming down from the roof. I have been to many many games were the fans were noisy throughout but not this loud. This will stay with me forever.

We got absolutely tonked 5-1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7SibGSix1gk and we were on the footie highlights that night. This was actually the turning point in Charltons fortunes as investment went into the team. The Valley? Well that is another story.
On the drive back we hard about the Valley Parade fire.

  • The above game was easily the noisiest Charlton game. I still enjoy watching footage of that one because it was such a dramatic occasion. How good was Paul Simpson that day?! And Melrose's header was brilliant too. I only saw the second half because the train was delayed but it remains one of my most vivid Charlton memories....47,000 in the second division! And you're right about the turning point because we signed SEVEN players the following summer (and only 4k turned up for the first home game of the season to greet them......)
  • Ipswich Home Play-Off Semi in '98 is probably the noisiest I can remember since I started going in '91. Great night.
  • Middlesbrough at home FA Cup 2006 or 2007 was rocking
  • The most recent one I can remember was Charlton Vs Leeds last season. Brilliant atomosphere. Got there just for kick off and sounded like a war zone!
  • Catania v Palermo - stadium Massimino. The most intimidating atmosphere I've ever witnessed - and deafeningly loud.

Ipswich for me also , blew the roof off .
  • Charlton v Swindon last season in the Play Offs seemed pretty noisy for The Valley.

Away from home- thought we were quite load at Southend.

A non Charlton game- was at Highbury in April 2002 when they beat Spurs 2-1 with a late winner to edge them closer to the title. That seemed very loud- certainly for Highbury anyway. And the time I was at Anfield- when they played You'll Never Walk Alone before KO that was quite special.
  • Last premier league game against the Spuds was loud at the Valley
  • Against the stripey shite when we sent them down
  • The Ipswich play off must be the highest noise to crowd ratio, the racket when Robbo equalised against Man Utd was off the scale as well.

I was at the San Siro when Inter got a last minute winner against Udinese, the roar seemed to get trapped under the
big roof and went on for about five minutes.

  • I agree that the Ipswich play-off match at the Valley was brilliant and has to be the best noise generated at a home match.
  • Has to be Ipswich for me followed closely by the Palace game where we sent them down.
  • I was in the Covered End when we beat Portsmouth 4-1 in pouring rain. At the time, Portsmouth were top of Division 2 and the rousing chants of 'Who's undefeated' just got louder and louder as each goal went in. A great night. Anyone remember that one?

I agree the Ipswich semi was a loud night.
  • Poznan U11s ;-)
  • Don't remember the Portsmouth 4-1 but I have vivid memories of the 1976 FAC 4th round match at the Valley. A 26k crowd with an estimated 10k Pompey fans squeezed into the one end. I have never seen so many people packed in so tightly. All you could see were faces just about, with no gaps. They made quite a din that day.

For the record, it was a 1-1 draw and Harry Cripps predicted that we would win the replay. Indeed, we did, we stuffed them 3-0. They weren't so noisy then.
  • Ipswich Play-Off Semi at The Valley without a shadow of doubt for me, was unreal.
  • Not exactly old so go for Tottenham in relegation season.. although went to Stoke vs Arsenal in the FA Cup and the Stoke fans do live up to their expectations. the few times the whole crowd burst into song were amazing
  • I was at man city for their promotion and I didn't fancy our chances of survival if we'd stopped em that day ....
That was very loud and that gate of 47k was massive , this was before football got all trendy and sky hyped up and we were only getting 5k in those days
Ipswich at home in the play offs was when we sounded like we had genuine passionate support for once

  • Definitely Man City, I also had the privilege of standing in the Kop when Liverpool won the league in 81, that was very loud but didn't compare to the Man City game. Luckily, we got an early train, the later trains were all delayed. Maine Road was packed, literally to the rafters, with people hanging to the roof supports. I remember a police officer saying to us " I hope you lot don't win today, we had to keep the Luton supporters in for over 2 hours when they sent City down", that was the infamous game when David Pleat danced across the pitch at the end. At full time the City fans swarmed onto the pitch, once they had finished cheering their team, they turned and headed in our direction, I thought "they're gonna give us a kicking anyway, just for the fun of it" but they stopped by our pen and started pointing and singing to us "LOYAL SUPPORTERS", boy was I relieved. Heard about the Bradford fire whilst on the train back to London. The Covered End when we beat Portsmouth on our return to the Valley was good as well but that whole day was very very special.

  • The only time I ever sat in the south stand was for the Ipswich playoff game, the noise was deafening and the Ipswich fans weren't making any of it. Thought it was just the acoustics of the south stand but after reading the comments on here, I guess the rest of the stadium was like it.
  • I had the same concern at Maine Road as the celebrating Man City fans all turned toward us, my previous visit, possibly the season before, we were pelleted with coins and all sorts. On this occasion we exchanged mementos. Much relief.

Drove a Ford Sierra that day for the first time. Much better drive than my old Marina but I would guess there are more Marinas around still than Sierras. Maybe Slater should note that you don't need to be all flash and high tec to stay the course:-).
