edited January 2011 in General Charlton
Charlton Athletic visit Tottenham Hotspur at White Hart Lane on Sunday 9th January 2011 in the Third Round of the FA Cup.

This will be the 80th time the two clubs have met.

The first meeting came in November 1929 in the Semi-Final of the London FA Charity Cup at West Ham United's Upton Park in a game which Spurs won 5-3.

The teams met for their first League game in the Second Division just under a month later at the Valley with Charlton coming out on top 1-0. Spurs won the reverse fixture at White Hart Lane in April 1930 3-0.

Another match in the London FA Charity Cup was won by Spurs 6-0 at the Lane in October 1930.

The clubs met for four more seasons in the Second Division until the outbreak of World War Two with Spurs winning four games, Charlton winning three and one game drawn.

Spurs and Charlton met regularly during the wartime years and a total of 19 games were played during this period.

The first meetings in the First Division came during season 1950-51 and Spurs drew 1-1 at the Valley with Alf Ramsey scoring a penalty and won 1-0 at White Hart Lane with Sonny Walters scoring the winning goal. Spurs finished that season as Football League Champions for the first time.

The teams met for another six seasons in Division One up to season 1956-57 with Spurs winning seven games, Charlton winning four and one match drawn.

Spurs beat Charlton 3-2 in the FA Cup Third Round in 1961 with goals from Les Allen (2) and Terry Dyson. Tottenham would later win the FA Cup to go along with the League Championship which was also won that season.

Spurs dropped down to Division Two for season 1977-78 and lost 4-1 at the Valley with Peter Taylor scoring, but won the return game at White Hart Lane 2-1 with a Glenn Hoddle penalty and a John Pratt goal.

The teams were drawn together in the FA Cup Third Round in 1985 and Charlton drew 1-1 at the Lane with Garth Crooks scoring for Spurs. The replay at the Valley was won by Spurs 2-1 with goals from Mark Falco and Tony Galvin.

Charlton regained their Top Flight status in 1986-87 but lost both games to Spurs that season 2-0 at the Valley with Niko Claesen and Tony Galvin scoring while the match at the Lane ended 1-0 with a Clive Allen goal.

Charlton remained in the First Division for a further three seasons with Spurs winning two games, Charlton winning one and three matches drawn.

Spurs were founder members of the Premier League in 1992-93 with Charlton getting promoted in 1998-99. The match at White Hart Lane was drawn 2-2 with Alan Nielsen and Chris Armstrong scoring for Spurs, who won at the Valley 4-1 with goals from Darren Anderton, Oyvind Leonhardsen, Sergei Rebrov and an own goal from Charlton's Richard Rufus.

There were 14 more Premier League meetings before Charlton's relegation at the end of season 2006-07 resulting in six wins apiece and two draws.

Saturday's match will be the 5th FA Cup game between Spurs and Charlton, who have yet to win against Tottenham in the competition.

The clubs have never been drawn against each other in the Football League Cup.

Overall, Charlton have won 24 games, Spurs have won 44 games and 11 matches have been drawn.

  • Neil Ruddock played for us??
  •
[cite]Posted By: Valley11[/cite]Neil Ruddock played for us??
According to my records, Ruddock was with Charlton for a short while, although I don't think he played any League games for the Addicks.

Perhaps he was on trial or on a loan?
  • Been to the Lane five times to see CAFC and never seen us lose - just got a ticket for Sunday yesterday (thanks to T.C.E - top man!) and hoping to preserve that proud unbeaten record

    1984/5 - FA Cup 1-1
1987 First Division 1-0 Davdi Campbell after Wilo clattered the keeper
1998 Premier League 2-2 Stevie Jones
2002? Premier League 1-0 Chrissy Powell and Rufus sends big Les into orbit
2004 Premier League 1-0 Scotty and Di Canio totally outclassed them and C Cole nods in a thoroughly deserved winner

    fingers crossed for Sunday...

  • Mark Bowen played for both clubs also.

His Dad, Charlie, did. Maybe Richard was in the Youth team at some stage?
  • Richard played in our Reserves / Youth team in the early 80's

Richard Gough started at Charlton but never played for the first team. I definitely saw him play in the reserves once.

    Below details from Wikipedia

Born to a Scottish father (former Charlton Athletic player Charlie Gough) and Swedish mother, Gough grew up in South Africa, Went to school at King Edward VII and began his career playing with the Wits University club. Looking to build a career in British football, Gough went on trial to Rangers, but was turned down. After that he was provisionally signed by Charlton Athletic.

  • Well I never...

You learn something every day eh
  • No specific mention of us absolutely battering Spurs and going 3-0 at WHL only to go down to 10 men but still run out 3-2 winners I see. Funny that.

In fact, no real mention of any Charlton scorers - they been expunged from the record books or something?

    Flanagan's hat-rik anyone?

(PS. Don't much like Spurs - arrogant bunch of c***s by and large)
  • Didn't Peter Garland play for Spurs?

lol like to thank him for his effort tho
  • Richard Gough was at CAFC as a teenager but got homesick and went back to South Africa. This would have been late 70's/early 80's I'd guess.
  • Point of order; the games under Lennie's reign were at Selhurst not the Valley as stated
  • Where's Colin Cameron when you need him?

The magnificently named Edwin Redvers Baden Herod, for that was his full name, was born in Ilford and played for Barking Town before moving to Charlton.

He played for six seasons as the Addicks full-back from 1922 to 1926 before signing for Brentford for £1,500.

Just eight months later, he became Brenford's largest outgoing transfer when he joined Tottenham Hotspur for £4,000.

Herod played 49 times for Spurs before moving on to Chester, Swindon Town and Clapton (now Leyton) Orient.

And I thought that Dick Upex was a good name.

  • HARRY ON CHARLTON...

Harry Redknapp described the FA Cup as a 'special competition' before our opener against Charlton on Sunday.

The competition has certainly been kind to the manager in recent seasons – he won it with Portsmouth in 2008 before reaching Wembley again in the semi-finals last season where we agonisingly missed out on a final place with defeat against Pompey.

We now get underway in 2011 with the Addicks making the trip across the Thames for a third round tie at the Lane, kick-off 1.30pm.

Charlton are currently fifth in League One and Harry acknowledges that with former Spurs Gary Doherty and Johnnie Jackson in the squad, the team from the Valley will be all out to cause an upset.

“For me, the FA Cup is a special competition and it would be great to have a run in it this year,” he said.

“We would all love nothing better than to reach a cup final if we can. I believe with this squad that we have a real chance too.

“There are some top players who haven't seen much action lately so I will certainly think about giving one or two of those lads the opportunity to be involved due to the number of fixtures we have faced of late.

“However, we know Charlton are a good side and it will be a tough game.

“They will come here full of effort and give it their all. The likes of Johnnie Jackson and Gary Doherty will certainly want to do well having previously played for the Club.

"It is a London derby so I am sure it will generate a great atmosphere."
  • I thought Charlton gave a very good account of themselves in the first half.

The introduction of Luka Modric for Spurs at halftime made all the difference for Spurs.

It's a testiment to how tight the game was that Harry felt the need to bring him on to change things.

The Addicks can take pride from their performance and they never gave up trying for a goal.
