Promoting an assistant manager.

edited January 2011 in General Charlton
Firstly, I know that there are a few manager threads, but I really don't want Dennis Wise (poor spending in the transfer market is a major issue). If you look at what Brendan Rodgers has done at Swansea, Poyet at Brighton and Hughton at Newcastle, then surely Steve Clarke could do it in League One.

Here's a brief run down of some of the candidates in the local paper that I've written. It's my first article for the newspaper's website, though I have written articles before for Vital Football and sites like that. Hope it's OK. I can go a bit more in depth on this thread though because I've only got about 400 words to play with in the article.

The good points are that Clarke was a defender (an area that is currently very week), he's a fantastic coach and also must know loads of people in football, plus he's well liked and respected by players.

I don't think Hughton would come, considering his current pedigree and the fact he's getting linked with loads of available jobs at the moment. Can't see him taking a job at a League One side so soon after being sacked.

Poyet and Rodgers both have jobs and I can't see either wanting to leave.

Sorry Henry Irving, I did ask if it was OK with the moderators first and was told it was.

I've also put plenty of my points in the thread so you don't have to bother looking if you don't want to.

I do think Clarke would do a good job and I'm not sure who else would come who would be better. You get plenty of fanciful names but it's hard to believe most of them. I mean, why would Hoddle or Poyet give up the jobs they have now for the long hard slog which will no doubt be the second half of the season. I'd rather stay as manager of Brighton or sitting in the sun in Spain with a growing football academy if I was them, to be honest.
  • No probs you sticking your articles up mate, but a little bit of transparancy to everyone reading wouldn't go a miss that its your work you are effectively promoting, and not just something on the web you stumbled across and thought you'd share with everyone !

Sorry mate; have corrected the opening post. Thought I was going to get grief if I said it was my own article. I have read this site quite a lot before becoming a member. Would like to post a lot more on here and not just if it relates to an article. Again, apologies.
  • no need to apologise mate
  • I think that Clarke is a good call, but get a feeling that more a 'name' is wanted......

Quite who!..... no idea, unlike the 'oracles' on here!
  • Like the article, Dan, though I'm not sure it's fair to draw a comparison between Hughton and Roy Keane, as they are rather different characters!

But I'm still puzzled why the News Shopper ran a poll featuring Wise plus Chris Coleman, Kevin Blackwell and Gareth Southgate - can you shed any light on where that random list came from?

    Not a clue I'm afraid.

Southgate's surely more of a target for Palace, like Coppell. Coleman and Blackwell would probably be waiting for jobs at Championship clubs (though they may have to wait a while, because I'm not sure that either are really good managers; they're OK, but not a Paul Lambert or Gustavo Poyet).

    Don't you mean "orifices"?
