Peacock & Matthew

edited January 2011 in General Charlton
Sound like a dodgy solicitors (ironic), but is there any possibility being thrown into the managerial mix that these two may actually work out as a decent pairing ?

Its clear how respected around the club Damian Matthew is, but influencing and getting your footballing values and beliefs across to teenagers is one thing, getting professionals to take on board and get reactions out of them is completely different.

If this set up is to last more than a few days then with Matthew doing to bulk of the coaching, and Keef the respected figurehead, it has the raw ingredients of the Trollope / Lennie partnership that worked so well for Bristol Rovers for a number of years.

I know its the unlikely outcome, but if we go and get something at WHL on Sunday (and seriously don't write that off), then should this pairing be given serious consideration ?

  • I like the idea of Damian Matthew being involved ... everything I hear seems to show that he has a lot of potential as a manager and all he now needs is the right guidance to move up the ranks.
  • All depends on what other managers are available/willing to come to us.

I know very little about the managerial experience of either of them though and that would worry me.
  • [cite]Posted By: nolly[/cite]No.

    ditto
  • No. Draw a line under and move on....! ;o)
  • Zola/Matthew
    Clarke/Matthew

    Yep
  • have to agree with nolly. someone non-charlton please....
  • I agree. I wouldn't want Peacock to be full time purely because if it didn't work out i wouldn't want that to be the reason he is remembered, especially by younger fans as he deserves better. I hope he does well in the interim but only until a completely new managerial team comes into play.
  • Paddy Powell will be pleased - quote from 'No Substitute' ;-

'I arrive earlier than usual and walk straight out onto the pitch to have a few words with my old pal and Valley groundsman, Colin Powell. Paddy has been very smug for the last month since reading on Charlton's website that he was rated a £10m player while I had a £1m valuation in a game of fantasy football based around the club's history. He will never let me forget it.'

Don't know why I remember that bit. As to the question, I don't know enough to have a view, but have noted that a lot of people whose views I respect have rated Damian very highly. Teamed with KP's experience, who knows what's possible, but too much of a gamble post Parky I would suspect for the new guys.
  • Very, very unlikely.

  • Somebody's got to take training this week, and prepare the team for Sunday.

Peacock is 66 years old in May - I daresay he could do without all the stress, tension and expectation of matchday at his age. For a couple of games, fine but not on a permanent basis.

The new people will want their own man.
  • It's a good suggestion but the new owners would want a name people know so it won't happen.

They'll want to make their mark and show they mean business with this club imo hence the sacking of Parky already.
  • No - we need someone from outside the club to come in, new broom and all that...

I'd rather Matthew carried on coaching the academy.
  • I'm just as concerned about who takes Matthew's job at the academy. Hard to replace.

Problem is will we still have an academy? ... interview with Slater was not exactly positive and committed on this point ... very vague as to whether it will continue.
  • Absolutely not. Peacock has been out of the firing line too long and why on earth would he want it? As for Matthew. Cetainly get him involved for future but can't seriouly be considered for anything other than a possible first team coaching role.

I don't see why not, it is a big success story with clear results and isn't it more or less self-funded via Valley Gold?

Fully agree mate ... my point is that it was not exactly fully supported in the interview.
  • I'm going against the tide. Yes. Unlikely, but if there's evidence it works, yes.

I never thought I'd see such a 'non-charlton please' trend on here.

Ahh got you, that would rile me more than Wise!
  • Peacock is our Trevor Brooking - I'm sure he is doing it to help out and out of necessity rather than as a long term thing. Matthew seems to be doing a good and important job on the development side so maybe it would be best to keep him their too. However, just the right people to take charge for this period of limbo - they know the players and the club and the players know them.

On the OS it says that Damian Matthew '...oversees the development of Charlton's 18 to 21 year-olds'.

Steve Avory is listed as the academy manager. Rhys Williams is the assistant academy manager (7-12 age groups). Presumably Steve Avory is responsible for coaching 13 to 17 year olds.

Avory was coaching that age group, but took over from Gritt as manager of the academy as a whole.
  • academy / kids / younsters whoever he coaches, it's not the first team.......and I'd sooner he stayed with them on the development side, bringing them through, he's clearly pretty good at it by all accounts.

So who has been repsonsible for coaching the 13 to 17 year old groups? I always thought it was Damian Matthew.
  • No chance of KP being offered the job permanently I'm sure. Although it appears that my glass is a lot fuller than most, I think you will be happily surprised by the quality of the new manager, and the way has obviously been cleared for him to bring his complete coaching team with him. The new boys definitely mean business, and I expect the new Manager to have at least Premiership potential and possibly experience ie Hughton, Brown, Allardyce etc. I believe that the money behind the takeover is middle eastern, and those people will have high expectations.
One good thing is that the appearance of Peacock and Matthew on Sunday will undoubtably mean that we all travel in a happier mood, and give them a terrific reception which in both cases is fully deserved.
  • No.

This current crop of first team players need sorting out and a familiar face won't do that.

We need to get out of this league pronto.
  • In the one or two games they're likely to have the squad for I wonder what difference they can make to our general play? I expect DM to gave us playing more on the floor, but will he sideline the main hoofers, Doc and Francis? It'd be a brave move to bring in Jenkinson, personally I don't go with this criticism of bringing players in too early - it depends on the player. I wonder if they will still have us set up defending deep and staying deep when we attack, which isolates the midfield and thus the forwards? Can KP devise a way of getting Waggy running at an unprotected full back? Ditto Reid? The wingers have been less effective recently because by the time they get the ball they've been doubled up, and Fry and to a certain extent Francis don't overlap. If they can introduce some changes I can see us giving Spurs a game.
