Parky : “The fourth official was stood next to me and I told him “you know that’s not a sending off” and I asked him to tell the ref what he’d seen, but he said his mic wasn’t working so he couldn’t communicate with the ref!
“That really frustrates me because the fourth official is here to do a job and he, like me, had a good view of it but unfortunately he couldn’t give his opinion to the referee."
I had thought that fourth officials are not allowed to offer refs an alternative viewpoint, although I think they should. Its a bit mickey mouse if the mic didnt work. Andy D'Urso would have called the game off for that
It was an evening up decision without a doubt but a foul so no use appealing. depite an excellent goal, I think Benson needs a rest anyway - Sodje fit enough for the bench so maybe time to give him a go - is Joe a possibility for tomorrow?
I don't like hiding behind poor officials but it does sound like they well and truely cost us yesterday. Not seen a replay of the disallowed goal yet but that sending off is an absolute joke - I'm not sure Benno doesn't get something on the ball, let alone serious foul play.
Can't agree now is the time to rest Benno, he's looked a bit short on confidence and scoring twice yesterday (albeit one was chalked off) should help him there.
Whilst we're at it, their third goal should never have stood. Ashley Vincent hand balled it in the build-up so that should have been possession to us, then one of their strikers (not the scorer) bundled Doherty over in the box.
there are so many completely atrocious decisions made that winds up everyone apart from the ref in the middle who thinks the game is about him, that we really ought to embrace tv referrals. sending off or no sending off? it's not going to take 30 secs to make the call and saves time with all the players running up to the ref to dispute it.
The standard of refereeing is the worst I have seen in any of the divisions. What is going on? West Brom were denied a cast iron penalty yesterday against Man U. Clearly, the referee realised his mistake after the break and denied Man U a cast iron penalty. It makes you wonder whether the rules have been amended to allow referees to even out their poor decisions during a game.

Totally agree with you. Any ref who doesnt have an ego problem ought to welcome that help, as well. I can remember when we all had to take turns to ref Sunday league games and just the lack of linos was a massive problem. Your last point too, we could bring this in and then say that any player who even approaches the ref while the referral goes on gets an automatic card.
Everyone in cricket seems to believe the new systems and the way they are used are a good thing.
Have to say, as soon as Benno went up for the header I knew the ref would blow. My first reaction was that it did look like he had his hands on the defenders shoulders, but would like to see it again. The sending off though was a complete joke.

Everyone in cricket doesn't seem to believe in the new system, most notably Graeme Smith South Africa captain & our very own Geoffrey Boycott.
Also it will cause players to run up and dispute it even more, instead of going up and purely arguing with the ref on every little decision a player feels hard done by (which is most of them) the players will surround him and demand he looks at a replay.
give them 3 appeals each then. up to the players if they want to waste them. but mostly the ref is right and the players would just be making themselves look more foolish in contesting minor decisions.
[cite]Posted By: ThreadKiller[/cite]give them 3 appeals each then. if they want to waste them on which way a throw in was to go then unlucky when a controversial one can't be contested.
So what happens if a ref doesn't give a foul and the game plays on and then somebody makes an appeal? Do we stop play and go back to the decision?
The Benson sending off wasn't even a booking absolute joke of a decision who oh seemed to react because the crowd behind him did (for the first time all game).
I knew he wasn't going to give the goal when Benson went up. It was one of those that's sometimes the ref will give
and sometimes blow up for a foul. My personal view was that it should have stood.
Should have had a 3rd penalty in the 2nd half when Francis got absolutely taken out, but he could have actually been shot and the ref wouldn't have given us another pen.

They do? Why did the Indians insist on not using the review system for their series in South Africa then? I don't think that the review system is universally liked by the players - or the commentators for that matter. It's only the TV companies who are pushing for it's universal adoption. FWIW, I'm in favour of the reviews system and the technology used in it - but to say 'everyone in cricket' is similarly in favour is well wide of the mark.

Me too Olly. Whilst all around me were celebrating I was looking at the ref, so I must have thought Benson had "climbed" or I too would have been celebrating.
However, I'm keen to see it again.
NB Our first penalty looked desperately harsh on them (but we won't talk about that :-)
It would be Charlton appealing don't forget so the appeal would automatically be deemed frivolous as happened when we were in the Prem.
Benson will be unavailable for 3 matches, one of which is a lucrative but ultimately unwinnable cup match, can we afford his ban to go up to 4 or even 5 games?
imho Benson's tackle was clean. In line with us in the stand, you could hear the 'boing' kind of noise that you get when someone hits a ball with something the other side of it (Benno's foot) – a bit like slapping a balloon held in one hand with the other – if you get my drift.
With regard his disallowed goal, it was one of those that are often allowed and often not. I don't think he climbed but he was up earlier than the defender and travelling so that he ended up over the defender. Not a foul in my book but that ref was never going to let us win!

Somethings never change.
No that prat was the 'other' lino yesterday. The ref was the one we had last Boxing Day who sent off Sodje and Burton.

don't we already play advantage.i always play to the whistle anyway.

Loads of postponed games.
Worth an appeal.
