I have an old 75/76 Rothmans and was glancing through it yesterday evening.
Charlton played virtually the same 11 all season, and 9 of the team were born in the London area. Most teams in fact were made up of predominantly locals.
Hardly a foreign born player in the top division, apart from Jimmy Nicholl!
Anyway my question is - why/when did Mark Penfold join Manchester United on loan, but not play any games for them?

Yes, I'm sure your right, PBS.
I seem to remember a 17 or 18 year old Mark Penford and his crazy hair, being invited up to Old Trafford for a week.
This is something that annoys me about football these days: squads of up to 50 players and still managers moaning about too many games and wanting winter breaks.
Didn't Liverpool win the league having used about 14 players all season? Then there was 42 league games (OK less European games, but that's only if you've qualified) and one sub.
Another thing is, why do the league allow such big squads and then penalised clubs for using them when they want to? Surely if you're in the squad you're good enough to play. Same applies to managers: they should use their massive squads when they have injuries without bleating on about it.
Anyway, Mark Penfold. Slightly before my time, but by all accounts I hear he was a tidy player. Who would have been the Man Utd manager at that time?
..........
I'm not sure but maybe Tommy Docherty?
Met Mark Penfold on Sunday funnily enough, he was a really friendly bloke.
I also met Mark after a charity game at The Valley. Very unassuming and amiable. He used to do the hosting job I think for the corporate lounges. Really nice man.
Chatted with him and mentioned his brief sojourn at United. Reading between the lines I think he got homesick and just never settled, so the thing was cut short.
He was a super player for us and I must say he came across as a decent, unassuming bloke.
Yes it was Docherty in charge - Mark mentioned him briefly; a genuine one-off character The Doc according to Mark.
