My cheery message for Richard Murray - feel free to add your thoughts to the man

edited December 2010 in General Charlton
Dear Richard,

I just wanted to express my heartfelt thanks to you for everything you have achieved with Charlton Athletic and sincerely hope that the sale of the club doesn't mean the end of your involvement at the club.

Despite being only 34 years old I have been on a hell of a journey with this club starting out as a nipper on the old East terrace when I didn't know much about the game. I then came along to Selhurst Park and enjoyed the rollercoaster of a ride that Lennie seemed to give us on an annual basis. I then managed to get myself into the Charlton youth team alongside Lee Bowyer and Jamie Stuart but that didn't work out for me nevertheless I kept the faith. I ventured along to Upton Park for our brief stint there and I was there on our return to the Valley leaping around like a loon when Walshy slotted home.

I know all clubs have their respective stories to tell and heroes and villains from the past but I just feel there aren't many clubs in the country that have had as much going on in over the last few decades as we have. It has certainly been entertaining if not always a pleasure.

I must confess that when Alan Curbishley departed I was one of those fans who was excited at the prospect of something new despite still worshipping the man. I was starting to feel that I'd lost my connection with the club and that the players were all a bit too far removed from the fans.
As we have now fallen down the leagues, some might say to our rightful place, I feel more and more in touch with the players and feel we are building once again towards something bigger and better than where we currently reside.

What the future holds is anybody's guess and hopefully we, as fans, will find out in due course who is taking up the reins. One thing I will say though is that you have the backing of a vast swathe of our fans in terms of your judgement as to whom we are sold and the fact that Peter Varney is a part of it also fills us with confidence.

And another thing - when I mentioned about heroes in the clubs history you are most definitely up there with the best of them!

Thanks for everything

Steve

  • He certainly knows how to play a crowd, i'll give him that !
  • Shouldnt we wait until when and if the deal has gone through? Murray might still be involved?
  • Never a bad time to offer Richard thanks for what he has done for CAFC, Charlton legend for now & Forever.
  • chickens hatched count, etc not to take anything away from RM however.
  • [cite]Posted By: Swisdom[/cite]Dear Richard,

I just wanted to express my heartfelt thanks.............

    Why don't you just e-mail him mate - richard.murray@cafc.co.uk
  • thats what i was thinking whatever you feel about him do we all need to no.
  • Not to take anything away from Messrs Murray or Varney, but let's see how the due diligance pans out first shall we before we all get carried away again (like the Z word).
  • I think he's nice too!
  • Not yet Richard. . .
  • Still think he gets more stick than he should - yes he's made mistakes but he has also lost a lot of his personal fortune on us and he has done everything -right or wrong in what he saw as the best interests of the club. Whether involved or not history will look back on him favourably. Thanks Richard.

  • Completely agree, Swisdom. The sums of money he's donated (!!!) and free time he's committed to the club over the years are immense and, like you, hope he maintains an involvement. His decision making and strategic thinking have been spot-on, with, of course, 1 notable excpetion - hiring ex-Palace to replace Curbs!!!

Hope the supporters/club do something at his 'last' game to acknowledge everything he's done. Could we see the West Stand re-named in his honour?

Be great to see Peter Varney as Chairman and given his knowledge of the club's affairs, sure the DD process will be a formality.

BTW, have tried emailing him before but richard.murray@cafc.co.uk bounced back!
  • Richard Murray deserves a round of thanks gratitude regardless of whether the takeover goes through or not. Sure he's made a few mistakes, but he's earnt the right to make those mistakes and in any case he's got more things right than wrong.

    Muzzer - Charlton hero.
  • You never had a mint Richard, but your too good to hurry away. ................
  • Muzzer is massive and the fact that he has stuck with it as it turned pears says a lot. He took the baton from Richard Alwyn and did wonders for us and he should be made club ambassador or president or something. I see him and Varney teaming up like the old days but this time hopefully with somebody in the background with funds capable of breaking through that glass ceiling we hit in the prem.
  • Muzza is a Charlton legend and without him we would be up to our necks in it; if we even had a club at all, that is.

So thank you Richard and Merry Christmas.

I agree wholeheartedly with the sentiment and with another lifer on the takeover thread about Richard's involvement with the club having put us on the map and his achievements during the good times are still the reason we are percieved as a big club today. I have to say 1) I hope it all goes through (fingers crossed been burned before and all) and that 2) He sticks around and retains a senior position or if it all goes pear shaped remains the man in charge until some investment comes in. Either way he is still a Charlton legend who helped give us the good times and even though some of his gambles post 2006 have not come off he has always done what he has thought right for our great club and no one could ask for more than that.
  • He's not dead is he ? Lets wait until we see who's taking over before we pronounce him as the new Messiah .

Bedsaddick, a pretty barbed and unpleasant comment there mate. Was it really necessary?

No offence . Just it looks like an obituary to me and while i agree RM has done mostly great things in the past . we are now in league one for a second season and have sold the club to a group who have yet to be announced. It could be anybody .

  • I have only met Richard on one occasion, but his love of the Club shone out like a beacon. If the takeover goes through successfully, I would definitely favour some public acknowledgement similar to that which we gave to Curbs.
  • dowie, reed, pardew ....
  • I just hope that these people taking us over have enough money to enable RM to get his investment back. Thanks, mate. It's been a rollercoaster ride.
  • Richard has been great for Charlton and despite recent mistakes is massively in credit in my books. Although we don't know the identity yet of the prospective new owners I am confident that RIchard would only sell to people who are right for CHarlton. ANd that goes for PV as well. I hope thAt when it's concluded RIchard can get his life back and we can give him our best wishes.

Yes Curbs! agreed! a wonderful joint decision from an excellent board that was active and worked together as a team...

dowie, reed, pardew ... not a joint decision

You appear to have one "D"s too many in your name
  • anyway you get cracking on your email.............
  • Ok so apart from getting in Curbs, laying the foundations for promotion, turning the club into a premiership team, developing the ground, bringing internationals to the club and saving the club from financial implosion and administration what else has Muzzer done for Charlton?
